  1. I'm not sure about the etrex but with the Garmin 12 when it first hits the satelite screen when it's trying to aquire if you push the enter button you are given 3 choices, one of them being change country or state.. Also for further help or future reference here is the etrex manual from the Garmin website. Good luck!
  2. red shoes.. I don't know if it has do with browsers but I use netscape and lately when I enter the room it takes a long time to actually connect. Have you ever waited awhile and let it sit... mine probably takes a minute or two to log in the occupants and show the chat...then it all scrolls on by and your in. I dunno... just a thought.
  3. I'm glad now that I haven't yet called the NY parks with this info. Very good concerns brought up here. I am from the group that believes the parks have a right to know though. I am definitely interested to see how they respond to these liability concerns but as far as quote:Third, Item 4 of the proposed policy, it seems to me, is broad enough to enable a park manager to veto almost any cache location. That is written broadly but it generally echos the same concerns we cachers expect from each other... respect of the environment and it's biodiversity. I have 4 caches hidden in cooperation with the parks. I do not believe that any of them has actually been visited by the rangers. They just wanted to know that it was not being buried or sitting in a nesting area or something. I described the area to them, gave them the coordinates and told them my method for hiding and since then I have gotten additional caches on properties of theirs approved within 24 hours with the similar process. This puts the responsibility of the individual park managers in charge of designating sensitive areas to you. If you expect a ranger to be a real PIA about allowing areas then that same ranger would probably have been one that would have confiscated any cache found. I kind of like the idea that the parks people are kinda looking out for my caches a bit. My very first cache's log was first signed by a ranger which left a positive message. Unfortunately that cache went MIA along with the log book so I never did get a chance to read what he wrote. I talked to the ranger this year and he told me that he had gone to bat for my cache when NYS parks wanted to remove all caches because of one they discovered and removed in Catskill State Park because it was in a restricted area on a cliff. He told them that this one wasn't hurting anything and it just seemed like a fun family activity. Though the legal issues should definitely be looked at by someone qualified (ie not me), I don't think we need to look for the worst in a possible agreement like this with the parks people, your being offered the opportunity to express your concerns and help develop the policy. Tell them and see what they have to say.
  4. I think this is great. It seems like a very reasonable process. I've been trying to work with the NYS parks system and have been caught in a few months worth of red tape now. Today I printed up the Pennsylvania Guidelines and Application process that you've posted here and I went down to the Park where my request had begun. They thought it was a good idea to send it along the chain. Tomorrow I'm going to call the regional director's office and see if I can email it to them. Anything to try to help them sort through their red tape and Pennsylvania is certainly taking a Positive attitude about it. So far that has been my experience with the rangers here but we'll see how it fairs through the channels. Rothstafari any chance with getting a database going like has been talked about in the forums? Where all the agencies that have contacted Groundspeak with a policy can be listed along with their contact information.
  5. Yiha! Old Bet has now been released too! Austin cachers alert! If anyone can help out an old elephant with way itchy feet we'd be much appreciative. I wonder what the chances are of her making it to New Mexico in a month. I'll be out there in August... it'd be neat to meet up with her to change her laminated tag with her new goals. I think I'll make it in hopes that she gets there by then.
  6. Thanks CheesyD, I'm going to be vacationing in NM in August and this looks like it will come in very handy! Good work! Ttepee
  7. I've had a tracfone since Christmas and it's really all I need. My boyfriend has a cell phone plan so we do most our long distance stuff on his phone. Mine is really just for emergencies... or the occasional call I need to make while on the road. I got it specifically for geocaching otherwise I don't think I'd have bothered. It cost 39.99 with a 20.00 rebate and came with 1 hour talk time. Since then I've spent $25 on time. It wouldn't pay for me to have a plan... I'm not a big phone talker to start with. I find coverage to be pretty good, though voice quality is not the greatest it gets the message across.
  8. You couldn't give coordinates to find it so it wouldn't be a geocache. I suppose you could try just as a chance bottle out there as I'm sure many have done. I suppose if many more did it the ocean would be pretty messy. I'd rather geocache

  10. This must belong to a Geocacher!
  11. quote:Originally posted by Ttepee: The last one I sent out was Gilbert.. who also carried along his own traveling cache.....he's out of service for 2 months now. Just thought I'd update my last post here. Gilbert was hidden and picked up again in less then 24 hours. Another happy Travel Bug

  13. Congrats Bassoon Pilot!! I don't know how you guys do it, but you sure do do it with style. Cache on!!
  14. chloew that is a great idea. I appreciate your offer to help. I will email the person holding her and ask him if we can work something out. Thank you very much.
  15. tracfone.com was the one I reccomended last time... 39.99 with $20 rebate and 30 free min to start then you buy the minutes as you need them.
  16. I know how you feel LB&MM. I have also released 4 TB's and have 3 more here that I just haven't been motivated to set loose yet. Of my original 4... the first that I released in Oct made the most ground... up until 3 months ago she had made steady ground between NY and her goal of Los Alamos New Mexico... she made it all the way to Austin Tx and now it seems the cacher that picked up poor Old Bet just isn't into caching anymore. At first he wrote me.. then when he still didn't place her he responded to my emails.. now not even that *sigh* The second disappeared in November, less then a month after release. The third I asked a fellow enthusiastic cacher that was moving west if she would be interested in helping out. My nephews from NM while visiting named a bug and helped me stash it so in trying to get them psyched for Old Bet's arrival I thought it would help to have the bug they stashed arrive quickly. She was very enthusiastic but dropped off the face of the earth since her arrival in AZ (I worry about her) The last one I sent out was Gilbert.. who also carried along his own traveling cache.. he is self contained and does not need to placed in a cache(I thought that would make it easier for people to place him), he can also be treated as a regular cache and not moved...he's out of service for 2 months now. I keep trying to tell myself that I am expecting too much and I just need to be patient. Travel Bugs don't live a human timeline... more a recreation timeline which is not nearly as steady as any of us want. But I have to admit my patience is wearing thin.. probably because none of them is moving... maybe if I put a few more out there probability will be more in my favor. I don't know. Jamie I wish that I felt dialogue would help. I released Old Bet within the first month of TB creation... I sent out a laminated card with her back then (yeah ok too wordy but hey..what can I do ;-) I've been in contact with most everyone that's moved her along... but basically the gist of it is it's out of our control. I think patience is definitely underrated with TB's. On my next laminated card I will add in there something to the affect of "If you find me, no matter where or when you find me, go to the computer and try logging me in...you might be surprised to find I have a life and loved ones that are anxious to hear of my adventures and whereabouts no matter how far astray I've wandered." Good Luck LB&MM
  17. The talk is that next week hopefully the new search feature will be functional. Hope that fits in your plans.
  18. I believe moun10bike had explained it when he first started the coins. He had been helping Jeremy develop the TB's, so Jeremy incorporated his coin numbers into the TB scheme right from the get go. Or something like that I'm psyched, one of his coins was placed in one of my caches here in NY yesterday. Not an easy one to get to though GC3CBA ...gotta try to make some time, would love to catch a glimpse of one.

  20. Definitely no problem with that. It would be a shame to have it sit way out there not moving. Do the bug a favor and take some pics along your trek with it too

  22. I am interested in following what goes on, but up in Dutchess county I'm kinda the outskirts of anything remotely metro... though local is relative in geocaching I'm not sure how active I'd be.
  23. I have one multicache, it was logged once as a find with only a partial find. I let it go.. didn't seem worth getting picky over.. I'd read some other logs from this cacher and he seemed ornery and difficult to make happy... keep'n him movin on was my motivation. Call me a wimp but I'm in this for the fun... I have enough of confrontation in the day to day... geocaching is to get away from that. I don't think it's right though...and it helped form my opinion of the guy... if he can live with it so can I. With the cache in question it seems that once it was partially logged once, everyone else just followed suit. I am glad that didn't happen to mine.. I geuss that's a risk I took though. BTW...Jamie can't wait to see what you've been working on. :
  24. Could this be it? It sounds like it is a dog tag attached to a can opener...ring any bells?
