  1. You can set how to record a tracklog to view and edit later in BaseCamp or Mapsource. I use Auto and Most Often. Seems to record a good track without too many errant trackpoints. If you refer to the Trip Log displayed that is generally higher than a recorded tracklog. Not sure if changing the above mentioned settings caries thru to the Trip Log display.
  2. Thanks Mitragorz and Red90! I just picked up a 64s so this will come in handy using that macro.
  3. This brings a question: where do you get or generate a GGZ file of caches?
  4. I used to use Img2gps to transfer home made maps and Garmin maps directly to my 60Cx without the need for Garmin software. Go here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mdipol/img2gps It combines multiple .img files into a single gmapsupp.img. Your unit can have only one such gmapsupp.img.
  5. How about borrowing a metal detector?
  6. This sounds like a simple Win7 issue. Easy to test. When exploring 'my computer' hold the Alt key and letter T key. That will bring up the Tools button (highlighted). Click on Folder Options/View. Under Files and Folders, see Hidden files and folders. Select the radio button 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'. See if this helps. Oh, nicely documented steps you already took. Very helpful for others to offer assistance!
  7. Grab Free topo and other maps from GPSFileDepot and you will be all set.
  8. I think you would get more immediate help by posting your question on a forum for Openstreet Maps, or wherever these maps came from. It sounds like an issue with the maps, not with unit Garmin unit or its desktop software.
  9. I use the Eneloop Pro 2450 mAh in my 62sc and get at least 10-12 hrs of constant use when hiking. Backlight and compass off. Always tracking, zooming, panning. Sometimes snapping a photo or two. Love them.
  10. Garmin first off. Look at the Montana series for the larger screen. Look at the 62s series for most of your desires at a lower price.
  11. Yes, indeed. I used the original postings term when I should have used elevation .
  12. Yes, the altitude data will be saved in your track.gpx file. I find the best way to record track data is to go to the menu for Setup/Tracks/Record Show On Map/Record Method Auto/Recording Interval More Often/ and to Auto Archive Weekly. This way each week (ending on Sat) a file is saved called something like "2015-01-04 17.10.36 Week.gpx" in the Garmin/GPX/Archive folder. [edit] I should have added that when you mark a Waypoint it creates a .gpx file with the altitude data as well, named something like "Waypoints_05-APR-15.gpx".
  13. Any Garmin GPSr without the barometric altimeter feature derives altitude from GPS/GLONASS satellites. GPX file has nothing to do with this.
  14. If the Dakota is similar to other Garmin units I would think go in the menu for Map Setup and choose the data fields for "2 small" for example. Then you can change what data you'd like for the fields, "distance to next" is one for example.
  15. Baseamp will create and display proximity circles... in Basecamp... but if you upload the points the circles will not display on your unit.
  16. I can answer that one. You will not see a proximity circle, but will get an alarm when entering or leaving the proximity limit set.
  17. I'd say you are looking for a .img file. If so, that gets placed in the Garmin folder internal memory or on the card in the Garmin folder (that you create).
  18. Try updating or re-installing the Garmin USB Driver found Here If that doesn't solve it, go into your PC Device Manager and find the Garmin USB drive and see if oyu disable/enable it (or similar). I recall my old 60Cx would have a hiccup from time to time and corrupt the driver.
  19. I'll jump in. I also came from the gold standard 60cx that I loved. One day the power button failed and I bought my 62s. You will love it!
  20. I always use the Map screen with two small data fields- Distance and Bearing. To be honest I keep the compass disabled and never use it.
  21. Ok then. What you have is DD MM SS.ss while our traditional GPS format is DD MM.mmm You can go into the setup menu to switch the format to match them and enter the given coords, then switch the format back.
  22. Can you show us an example of the coordinate string in question?
  23. Considering what you said you may want to look at the 62S since price is one of your concerns. You apparently don't need the extras the 64S offers.
  24. Simply copy (or cut I should say) the .img from one to the other while connected via USB. All map ,img files go into the Garmin folder on either. Be sure each map .img has a unique name so one does not overwrite another.
  25. You sure? Last I looked, it was a free 30-day trial, but that they charged ever year. Hmmm... yup >>> http://www.arcgis.com/features/free-trial.html ArcGISOnline is free, while ArcGIS you linked is for the desktop software for GIS users. You can try it Free for 30-days, then there would be an annual license fee. I believe that it is $100/yr for personal use- not for business use.
