  1. I have my Casio Pathfinder/Triple Sensor for about 6 years now, I think it's great as a backup. It also has a barometer/ altimeter in it. It does give you a continuous compass reading, if you press and hold the compass button. In terms of accuracy, I won't use it to direct air strike, but I think it's accurate enough for normal use. The only complain is that if you use it too often, the batteries are not going to last too long, and the watch itself may be too bulky for people with smaller hands (like myself)
  2. i have a meridian and would like to try your program too, but i have never used MapPoint, what does that do?
  3. digging up my old aviation ground school textbook....1/2 a degree is 30 nautical miles, which is about 38 statute miles, but this only works for the distance between latitude, the distance between longitude varies a lot from the pole to the equator

Max Often wrong but seldom in doubt I picked up mine 2 days ago too(from Fry's too)! and just found out the backlit buttons when i drove home tonight! what a nice and useful feature! I too plan to hold onto my old GPS (Magellan GPS2000XL).....at least for a while, may be as a backup...I missed the long battery life of my GPS2000. I was waiting for someone at the train station, people around me were playing games/talking on their cell phones and I was playing with my new meridian...
  6. I actually feel that it's not a big problem with the slow serial connection, since it's more like a one time thing for the download if you have a big enough card. I mean I don't plan on downloading new maps everyday, I downloaded the maps for my area and probably won't need the cable/cd for a while.
  7. You can use EasyGPS (free) to grap the waypoints and routes from your GPSr to your PC. http://www.easygps.com
  8. How about you sell both of them and get a meridian yellow/green (not sure how much you can get from selling the old ones)? this way, you can even leave the PDA at home and go without the cable mess after you installed mapsend on the meridian
  9. on my GPS, the default was set to 2 decimals only, you have to go to the setup menu to change it to 3 decimals
  10. I am not 100% sure about this one, my old Magellan GPS 2000XL has the default setting set to only 2 decimals, you have to go to the setup menu to change it to 3 decimals.
  11. Couple weeks ago, I had a dead battery in my car in the middle of nowhere after a hiking trip, I called AAA and ask for their tow truck. I told the operator the name of the road, but there were no cross street or anything (some of the roads had no names!), and the tow truck guy spent like an hour looking for me. Then I ask the operator if it will help if I give her my coordinates, she said she's not sure if the tow truck guy has a GPSr or not, but she asked anyway....10 mins later, the big yellow truck was in front of me! I am glad that my old faithful GPS 2000XL worked that day
  12. I use the PDA screen protectors and they are the great! You have to trim a pretty good amount of it, but I used the left over for the LCD on my digital camera.
  13. I was looking at their images today, and for some reason they don't center the image on the coordinates I entered, instead the image was centered about 1.75miles away. Has anyone noticed that?
  14. isn't that what manual's for?
  15. I don't know if any of you have ever heard "airsoft" before, it's just like paintball, but we shoot 6mm plastic BB's instead, and the best part is the weapons are 100% replicas of the real firearms, so a M-16 will look and feel (or even weigh similar in some cases) like a M-16, and they have a very wide selection of guns from a Colt 1911 to AK-47 to M-249SAW to sniper rifles like the M40/24, pretty much any military firearms out there (there is even a M134 vulcan!). It adds a big deal of realism if you are into military simulations. The only problem is you may have to deal with the cheaters, since there's no paint, we had to rely on honor system, if you got shot and don't call yourself out, probably nobody will know it.
  16. Greetings, fellow GPS 2000 series users! I have been using my GPS2000XL for almost 6 years now, and it still works great! It is very slow to get a fix (around 5 mins for cold!) and it always has trouble with the lock when you are under trees (one time i had to climb on top of a tree to get a lock when i was caching inside a forest!) and it may be too big and heavy for some. I love this unit, it's very tough, it survived numerous drops, it's water tight (i use it in the rain all the time) and the batteries last forever (tho it has to use 4 AAs). The resolution isn't as clear as the new models, it will only go down to 0.01miles, so caching with it will be a little more challenging/fun. (even tho there were quite a few times it led me right on top of the caches, amazing)
  17. I carry my Palm M125 in my pocket (without a case) all the time, basically wherever I go. It's has all kind of dents and stuff on it, but it works just fine, even though I would like to get a metal or hard plastic case.
  18. I have a Toshiba Libretto 50, it's one of those little VHS tape size laptops. I have my GPS 2000XL hook up to the laptop using a serial cable and home made a 12v cig lighter power cable for the laptop. Since the Libretto is pretty light, I was able to mount it on a modiflied CD player mount bought from auto stores for $12 in stead of those expensive "car desks". I am not sure if it's only Toshiba laptops or most of the laptops, Toshiba laptops has a voltage sensor that will starts charging at about 13v which is what you will get from the cig lighter when the car engine is running, so power inverter is not needed. I have an old copy of Street Atlas loaded on my laptop and use it for around town and usually leave in my car and in stead I use a palm pilot for the hints and additional information.
