  1. I bet some of those caches have humorous names
  2. I know what you mean when you know the cache is there but can't get to it. Had went to the cache location for GC110WD, Hang On Snoopy. Didn't know what to expect nor at what was required. The GPS pointed a bit off of the pier-like structure. Wasn't sure if it was in the sculpture that was on some pilings with about a five foot gap in between and a good drop or if it was on the sand. It was low tide and we looked down there, nothing. It finally seemed that it had to be in the sculpture. Neither of us felt comfortable trying to get this. Came home and read about others jumping over to make the find. This is one of those caches that we weren't meant to claim as a find. Maybe as a young pup, but not now. Oh well, plenty of more caches on the planet, but it's a nagging feeling knowing that it is there, but out of reach.
  3. Use that wrapper for that piece of gum I have been chewing for three days. Think I'll leave this human child's tooth. (Found that along with a plaster finger in one cache.) I'll take that small tooth and put it on my Day of the Dead altar. I'll leave a chipped marble that doesn't roll anymore.
  4. Turns out it was a Valid Hider and a real hide. Wow there must be a bunch of embarrassed cachers in your area. Wow, seven pages of this and I took a look at some of the online cache logs, whew that is some argument! The thing definitely went too far and tempers got too hot. Both sides are to blame, regardless of a cache being there. There is no reason to be attacking, put downs and yelling in caps. Until Geocaching.com has a Nano tag, (when making a cache) the cache owners should mention the size of container so people have an idea what they're looking for. I don't see this new guy doing anymore caching or at least in that area with what has happened.
  5. Brilliant! That is great, thank you very much!! I've bookmarked all 10 tutorials and will start studying them
  6. When I eventually got a GPSr that did paperless geocaching, the PQ thing really was a big deal. Knowing you are going to a certain city/county and can load geocaches in that area, really makes geocaching much easier. I find geocaches in places I haven't looked before, all because they are already loaded on the GPSr (thanks to the PQ members option). Think of 500 caches nearest to your location, all loaded into your GPSr. It really is a big help.
  7. While never making a PMO cache, I know someone that has. He told me it was only after a few of his caches were being removed/stolen that he decided to do this. I forget if he replaced them or started out with new locations, (the latter seems to make more sense) but he has had success in keeping these caches going. To the comment that more caches may be muggled because of the smart phone geocaching apps coming out, I hope not. If that comes to pass, the geocachers in general are going to pay the price. Let's hide the thieving, cache destroyers in big caches. What will the FTF do with them?
  8. There are several tutorials that exist, I don't have them on me at the moment but I'm sure someone will if they are not already part of this thread ( they are in several similar threads recently). The most important skill is to simply relax, examine every detail and think a bit... and never be afraid of backing off and starting the process over... that one kills many would be solvers... Good luck to you! Doug 7rxc Thank you Doug. I can see the allure of doing a puzzle and getting the personal gratification of that aha! moment. I don't talk to other cachers in my area. Being new to puzzles and don't have a clue what some want solved or done. I read posts from people who say they've called two, sometimes three people for help. Rather than get an answer for an existing cache, I'd rather see examples of types of puzzles to get a foundation to build upon and go on from there. Right now I got almost nuttin'. I am going to look for some tutorials and then come take a second look at the puzzle caches. You have a good point about backing off and starting all over again on a cache. With some time and education, I can approach the cache puzzle from a new angle. Thanks again
  9. I would give it a four or a five. The problem for me is I've never done a puzzle cache, not moderate or hard ones. I ask this - how are we supposed to solve these if we've never seen something like this? If we haven't come across it before and know how to try and solve it, there is no way to solve it correctly. Kind of like solving algebra or trigonometry without ever having a lesson in it. So for each different type of puzzle there is another road block to solving it. I think there needs to be a solving puzzle example forum section - not real caches but showing how to work at each type of puzzle. It's not your fault that you picked this puzzle but if you see less people doing it than another of your cache, this could very well be the reason. Good luck.
  10. or that's what I read in a book of quotes No new news on this and I myself wouldn't be approaching anyone until a law is set up. I think most of us geocachers (new and old) know better than to be hiding caches in places where it (the search for the cache) would be so far off trail that it wouldn't harm the plants, ground, etc. etc. It's not like we're talking about The Monkey Wrench Gang here and digging up supply boxes, just some of Mom's harmless Tupperware filled with white-trash and tacky little goodies. In the words of Rodney - Can't we all get along? Better to have a Broken Drum than a broken GPS. See you all around there sometime -Big Dog
  11. I recently got GPS Pro along with the connector cables and while I can move waypoints from my yello, Garmin eTrex I do not know how to get the Geocaching.com downloads onto the eTrex. The checked box/downloaded files are saved as a .loc onto my computer and I can't find a way to get the waypoints onto my eTrex. Can someone give me hints or walk me through this via a reply? Thanks, Big Dog -Happy Geocaching Big Doggie and Li'l Pup
  12. Last night I spoke with one of my fellow ham operators and he gave me some rather troubling news. He works at a place that sells gps units and he said he had a guy who works for Marin County Parks (i asked and he said the guy is probably both city and county - but he recalled seeing an Open Spaces patch on the guy's shirt) came in and wanted to buy a bunch of gps units so they could go and remove geocaches as they don't want the land being torn up. So I guess in the future if we start seeing not found caches in the open spaces or parks, we will know why. No time estimate on when they plan to start removing things. Sorry for the bummer news. -Big Doggie
