  1. Here is an idea: Make all virts require a difficulty rating of at least a 3 and a terrain of 4. Then we will see how many people really care. Hey GC, How about it? I am tired of this reccuring subject.
  2. Always magnetic dude!! I always carry two things around my neck; GPSr and Compass. Have been successful on hard hunts on hillsides, using a compass and a friend or a visual spot on the side of the hill or woods. Taking a bearing from several different locations while your friend is on the side of the hill, allows you to triangulate the cache location. Like the other poster said, this is required on very few hunts. Those seem to be the funnest though. Have found several caches using this method.
  3. The post earlier that pointed out the up-comming GC event was set up by Steve Brown. Steve is insane on this kind of activity. One of our funnest cache events was one of these combo O and GC caches and thanks to Steve, we were successful. His combo events are done by capturing the coords for the control points and Steve (Mr. Gadget) had the coords available for download at the event as a route on your Garmin GPS. We decided to do this one as a traditional Orientering run. We got most of the way through however, towards the end we got turned around on one of the control points and had to call Steve on the cell phone to get the coords for the third to last control point. It sure made us unhappy to not be able to do the course without assistance, however, it made us realize how handy a cell phone and a GPSR can be. If you ask Steve, he will likely let you in on the process for combining the two hobbies if you are interested in setting on up or participating in one.
  4. I was introduced to this GC thing about 4 years ago by a co-worker. I have been scouting the forums for about as long. I have seen Jeremy take a bunch of jabs and now see the Administrators taking a lot of heat. I don't support everyone's opinion on GC but I do find it interesting to read. The direction of GC? I would like to see emphasis on quality caches. Roadside markers, plastic bags, meaningless virtual caches, meaningless micros, should be discouraged, however, the hider's perception on what makes a good cache is too broad to control. The answer is, just go caching. You be the judge. If you don't like the cache, say so in your log. What the hell is it there for anyway. Complaining about it on these forums are not going to do the trick. Back to lurking. You might see me on the posts for a few
  5. Has anyone considered CITO for the cache itself. If there is trash in the cache, add it to your haul back to the car. Just be considerate of the people (kiddies) who love McDonalds Happy Meal items and use your otherwise best judgement. Just a thought.
  6. The best: A rugged keychain thingy that I have used for my work badge for the last two and a half years. The worst: I don't try to complain about that crappy junk we find, I am after the logbook. If I find something of interest, I always trade good. Very rarely do I find anything that catches my interest, but that's OK. I like the hide and seek the most. Thanks
  7. One thing I would note -- and I am not sure if it has already been discussed -- is that when describing the game to some folks, you might want to judge thier reaction to the concept in figuring out whether to continue the discussion. I recently had a lengthy discussion with someone -- at a local establishment where I hang out after work -- who was very interested in the hobby. I won't go into details regarding his reaction to the concept, however, I was inclined not to promote the hobby to him because of his attitude and some of the things he said he was going to do with it. He was very interested in the hobby however, he was saying some bad things. ( I won't go into detail) He was an A--hole about it and I just didn't want to introduce him to my "and your" world. It kinda freaked my wife and myself out. It might be wise to consider who you are introducing this game to. It is still a pretty obscure hobby. Might as well be picky when we are able. No matter how hard we try, some muggles are just not going to understand the concept. Bad for the hobby, I think.
  8. I have seen the "Muggle" reference before. Who does it refer to, exactly? Any non-Geocacher or someone who pilfers the caches? Just verifying the meaning of the term. If I am going to use it in conversations, I would at least like to know the correct context. Thanks
  9. I will be visiting the area this week from Olathe KS. If I find it I will move it on. Keep watching the site.
  10. I would say the rating is correct. Steve and Mary Brown, Taylor and I mastered the Spider on 3-30-02. The fishermen nearby couldn't believe thier eyes.
