  1. I am a lurker. That is all I've got to say about that!
  2. OK. I have decided. Stupid. In my experience, a thief always has justification for taking something.
  3. Prissy...I am a real cop. My 20 year aniversary was last Friday. If you would read this thread from the beginning, you would see that you, in fact, were not the original subject of this post which started long, long before your placed your cache. I merely looked up this thread and referred you to it in my find log so you could see that not all of us share your thought that condoms are a perfect geo-caching item. You might also note that I have not posted anything on this thread until now so it would be unlikely that I have been "fighting." Thanks for flattering me though...
  4. Welcome aboard. This is a good obsession along with camping!
  5. I don't that there is a theft in this case either. There does seem to be some degree of misjudgement on the part of the officer. I too would love to hear his perspective. 20 years of Law Enforcement always makes me skeptical of these types of stories. I liked the 1-800 wah wahh thing!
  6. Consumer Reports just released a study about insect repellents. I a story about it on my local TV news station just this week. The thing I gathered was the more DEET the more repellent. DEET isn't good for small children though. There was one brand that seemed to work about 8 hours.
  7. It is probably just as well that you did not get near your motorcycle today. It would have fallen on you! You just posted a good reminder to go prepared. Thanks for the laugh!
  8. I don't know but I once had a girlfriend tell me to drop dead... I'll check back to see what the answer really is.
  9. Here is a post from February that may contain what you are looking for. There is even a Markwell in the thread! By the way. Are you logged in when you do your search?
  10. Here is a long thread on geocaching in Arkansas State Parks. What started off as being negative became positive
  11. I have the etrex legend. It does have a decent mapping program but I don't really use it. I just click on the map provided on the cache page and zoom in to get most of the rivers and roads in the area. I print a copy to take along if I am unfamiliar with the area. I see that several on this board have the etrex yellow just as you do. They seem to be very happy with it.
  12. I was all excited to see someone from Fayetteville until I saw you were not talking about the Home of The Razorbacks and the University of Arkansas...Fayetteville, Arkansas. Too bad. I hope you do find someone nearby anyway!
  13. If my figuring is right Tyler Street on the west side of Conway, Arkansas (as well as I-40 and US 64) intersect your longitudinal line. I am in the northwest corner of the state and do not plan to go to Central Arkansas for a couple of months. Maybe someone from Conway can run the location and get the picture. This link will take you to a map of the area. Latitude: 35° 6 Min.00 Sec. Longitude: -92° 31 Min. 37 Sec. This Mapquest Site should be helpful to look up any cords that intersect with your line. 14. Sorry to get something started. I just thought some others might be interested in the download. CCC, I listened in high school and college too. I did rather well though I could never spell very well. It is known as a learning disability that I have had to work very hard to overcome.
  15. Just from personal experience as a police officer, I believe I would probably have the geo-cacher tell me what he/she is doing rather than try to read a card while I am checking him/her out. Usually a good explanation goes a long way and the truth always counts!
  16. Here is a free spell check program for Internet Explorer users. I have been using it for a few months and have had really good success with it. I realize this message is not about geo-caching but if you spell as poorly as I, you might be interested in the download. 17. Many cellphones and small electronic devices are actually guns in disguise. Please do a google search for "cellphone guns" to look at a few of the models. I imagine any small device can be fitted with a chamber and barrel to make it able to fire but the electronics would likely have to be removed. If you can't turn the device on, it could be a gun (or maybe some of the other things noted above). Small ink pens also are becoming common as single shot .22 guns. Some of these still write! Since the etrex looks so much like a cell phone, I figure most airport security agents don't know the difference or want to take time to discern the difference. I realize this has nothing to do with the original topic but I thought it might make interesting fodder. [This message was edited by popupcop on January 29, 2003 at 05:05 PM.]
  18. Sounds like we did it. I wish I could have gone to the meeting but I had to work
  19. I am a lifelong resident of Arkansas who resides in xxxxx. I am an avid camper. My family and I visit Arkansas State Parks several times a year. Recently, my family and I have become interested in Geocaching. Many of the caches we have sought have been in parks, recreation areas, historic sites and museums that we would have never visited had the cache not been placed there. Once we have found the cache, we have explored the area, and decided that we would come back yet another day. This is good for tourism and good for the economy as most geocachers do the same as my family. I have read the proposed rules dealing with geocaching in Arkansas State Parks. While I am all for protecting our beautiful parks, I hope that by developing these rules, Arkansas does not take a step backwards in promoting tourism in the Natural State. We all know how hard we have worked to get people to come here as a vacation destination! Geocaching does not generate hundreds of visits to a cache. In urban areas caches are usually visited three or four times the first week they are placed then get a visit about once every two weeks thereafter. Some caches are left for a year or more and as interest wanes, the cache is removed. Other caches still have occasional visits even after two years. Caches placed here in xxxxxx have logged fewer than 12 visits in the last year and I have not noticed any damage to the trails or parks as a result of geocaching. I feel that most of the proposed rules are easy enough to abide by and I applaud you for your stewardship. The biggest problem I see is the requirement to get a permit that only lasts four months. It is my hope that this permit could be issued for at least six month if not a year. Extending this time would allow for the cache to serve its useful life and would serve to bring more people into our parks for recreational purposes. Extending the time would show our willingness to reach out to geocaching as a recognized and wanted sport in Arkansas State Parks. I appreciate your allowing me this forum to address my concerns about the geocaching rules. If I may be of assistance to you please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, name and address withheld from websitefor security reasons.
  20. Make that at least three cops we know that geocache
  21. That or you could go to the Arkansas Parks Department meeting later this month and tell them your views about geocaching. The have a new but overly restrictive policy for us arkies. There is information on the regional forums that contain Arkansas. I see caches in Withrow Springs, Nebo and Devil's Den. The park heads at these parks do not seem to be too worried about these caches. I hope we can get the length of time changed from 4 months to 8 months or one year!!! I would like to see a simplified registration form for these too. Maybe they could allow one or two per park depending on the size.
  22. I received an etrex legend for Christmas and am instantly hooked on geocaching. I hope we can band together and get the Arkansas Dept. of Parks to relent a little on their geocashing rules. There is a meeting (in Little Rock of course) about this topic in mid-January 2003.
