  1. Another guy was driving so I was trying everything including laying it on the dash, upside down, backwards, etc. We drove down a road toward a cache then turned around and instead of it showing 180° it was way off that heading. But you might have something, we stopped so I could recalibrate the compass and while outside it did seem to match the Pro's heading. But I have had this for 2 months and it used to be real accurate in the truck. I will try the COG thingie too, thanks.
  2. I have a post below about having 4.02 problems. I was out with a Sport Track Pro and everything was the same on both units except my heading which was anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees off all the time. Also had a compass to check against. I cleared all memory and reinintialized 4 times and remembered to remove the SD chip but it is still off. I even recalibrated my compass and that made no difference. While driving down the road, my heading was off plus it bounced around up and down 30 degrees or more and the Pro was steady on a heading with the extra compass. Any ideas?
  3. Thanks for the info! I left mine out for 10-15 minutes and I will get to try it out against a Sports Track Pro tomorrow for accuracy. If its not working right I will leave it outside for 1/2 hr or so.
  4. I was there 2 different days and had the same results. Last night I reloaded everything and this time I took out the sd chip which I hope was the problem before and I used other peoples instructions on how to do this, not Magellans. How do you download an almanac?
  5. I upgraded to 4.02 about a month ago and I think everything was working ok. Sunday I was chasing a 4 leg cache and on the last leg I was .24 miles off! We verified the location on Mapsend and the location was correct, my gps was off. I also noticed one night while I was sitting in my chair inputting coordinates that my arrow was like 200' off from my "home" waypoint. I cleared memory last night and reloaded 4.02 and it would not find sats for 15 minutes so I took it outside and it took 10 minutes to find sats. When loading the firmware my gps would not turn off or reset as directions said it would. Any ideas???
  6. Dropped my Platinum onto a concrete floor and it didn't seem to hurt it any.
  7. I took it outside and left it for about 15 minutes and it finally found the sats so I brought it back inside and it still had sats. So I shut down, waited a few minutes and turned it back on and so far 10 minutes and no sats. With the old firmware I had lock inside the house or truck in like 1 or 2 minutes, any way to fix this pain with 4.02??
  8. I uploaded the new 4.02 firmware to my Platinum following the directions. Now it won't find any satellites, been trying for about 30 minutes. I initialized twice, took out batteries and tried again and still no sat. Whats up??
  9. I just used an old cell phone case that I had laying around and it works great on my platinum. Has a pocket clip and ring to put a lanyard on so I am in business and it cost 0$!
  10. Cool, thanks for the info but one more question. How do I know if I am downloading to the card or to the unit? How do I change this option????
  11. I installed EasyGPS and then I went thru a few pages of caches to download by clicking on the download option but then it only downloaded the last page where I selected from. So I went back to another page and downloaded them and they wrote over the previous ones and deleted them. Is there a way to check caches on different pages to download?
  12. When I install EasyGPS and download waypoints to my pc then load into my Platinum with a SD card, do the waypoints go to the basemap or to the Mapsend Topo map that will be on the card? Can I send it to either? How? Thanks.
  13. Cool, thats what I was asking: if the usb to serial cord would run at usb or serial speed. Guess I will still be buying the sd card reader. Thanks.
  14. Would using the usb cable take the place of getting a card reader for my Platinum 64 meg SD chip?
  15. I lived in Alaska in the late 70's and did a lot of pvt. bush flying to hunt, fish, play. I owned2) Cessna 170B,Stinson,Piper PA-14,PA-20,PA-22, and rented a Cessna 150 with 150 Lycoming to get my float rating. I belonged to CAP and flew a lot of hours in C172 and C152 doing searches. Then I stated a family and haven't flown since.
  16. I must be either blind or dumb or both. I did print the manual and I have read it at least 5 times cover to cover and I do not see the info that geospotter posted nor do I see entering coord anyplace. Maybe if you know what you are doing and pick and choose the info from all over the manual it might be there but if I knew how to do that I wouldn't be posting as a newbie. I do appreciat the help and I will look at easygps too.
  17. Magellan Meridian Platinum with a 64 meg chip and my friend got a Magellan Sports Trak Pro. We went out today and found our first cache! Both are hooked.
  18. geospotter, woohoo, found my first cache! Your info was perfect and worked like a charm. Why can't Magellan put that kind of info in the book instead of being so vague? In fact have you thought of writing a book? I would sure buy it. Welch, what page would "entering a coord" be on? I just read through the book twice and still don't see it. Thanks all, I need to go find another!!!!!!!
  19. Santa brought me a new Platinum and I have read the manuel 4 or 5 times and I have been all over the internet but my first question is this: How and where in the heck do I enter Coordinates to go find my first cache? Which ones are best to enter? Do I just leave a blank where the degree symbol is? Do I need to have the gps unit set for whatever type of coordinate system I type in? THANKS.
