  1. Personally, I prefer maps on my laptop for in vehicle navigation. Much larger screen than any GPS I've seen on the market make it much easier to tell at a glance where you're going. Plus, assuming you already have a laptop, mapping software like Delorme Street Atlas (with a USB GPS) is MUCH cheaper than buying a new handheld GPS and (if needed) maps.
  2. This seems, to me, to be the most common also. However, I have seen people that would make note of every 50th (50, 100, 150, 200.....) I've also seen people keep track of not only first to finds, but second and even third to find.... Basically, what you celebrate is up to you. Personally, I remember my first cache (easily, without looking) and keep a list of the 100, 200, 300, etc. I may or may not do something special for a "milestone" other than keeping track of what cache it was.
  3. Go to your query, and copy/paste the link here so we can take a look at it. As to your other question, I'm not sure as I don't have a Palm, and I use my laptop for maps.
  4. Generally, no. Caches or stages of caches must be .1 mile from any other cache, or stage of any other cache.
  5. Now that you have the premium membership, on the right side of your "my account" page, there's a "manage pocket queries" link. Click that, or go directly to www.geocaching.com/pocket/ You'll need to set up a pocket query and wait for the results to be e-mailed to you. When you first set up the query, DON'T select a day of the week for it to run. Make all your choices, sumbit it, then use the "preview the search" link to preview the results. If you have the results you were expecting, THEN select the day for it to run. (Choose the current day if you want it right away) If you didn't get the results you expected, or any results, go back over your choices and try to find the conflict. Remember, the choices are "and" choices, so choosing both "that I have found" and "that I have not found" will return no results, as there isn't any cache that you both have and have not found.
  6. Not that I know of, but they do give discounts to registered users, so if you registered your copy of v5 you'll get a bit of a discount.
  7. The Maryland Geocaching Society has a paperless tutorial for the Palm platform. Click here. Another can be found over at Geocacher University. Click Here.
  8. I haven't used my Vista in a while, but I believe if you press and hold the "click stick" on the face of the unit, it'll "mark" a waypoint, which you can then edit to the cache coordinates and save. One of the screens should also have a "mark" option.
  9. Copy the link to your query and post it here so we can take a look at it and figure out what you might be doing wrong. The most problem is checking too many boxes. Ie "I have found" and "I have not found" as you've either found a cache or not, so no cache will meet both of those choices. Remember most (all?) of the choices are AND choices, not OR choices, so any cache has to meet ALL the selections you've checked in order for it to be returned in the query.
  10. What they said. With even a basic older PDA, you can easily have the entire description, coordinates, last 5 logs and ratings for 500 (or more depending on the memory of your PDA and number of Pocket Queries you run) of the nearest caches in your area. The new "cache along a route" feature makes it even easier to find caches that'll be along the way when you're traveling somewhere. The measly $30 yearly fee is well worth it for the time and effort it'll save you compared to taking paper notes.
  11. Yeah, but I can't imagine Keystone's gonna find it entertaining to have to keep doing that...... Edit: I wonder if we can get him to fix the spelling mistakes while he's editing the posts?
  12. Well, since this double posted, may as well toss in another "dangerous" cache for the thread. Wanna ban this one?
  13. If you don't tell them that they may be killed, yes it should be removed. Is it bad that I want people to die looking for my cache, even though I warned them? No, from you it's almost expected.
  14. Well, someone here's missing something, but it isn't me. I think that MOST of us are intelligent to realize that if we're near a road cars could come "barreling down at us" and will pay a little attention to our surroundings.
  15. Well, you could, but it likely wouldn't get listed on this site as the guidelines restrict caches placed near active railroads. Again, just because YOU don't think it's safe doesn't mean it needs to be removed. There are caches in all kinds of "dangerous" places. You assess the risks and make the decision to hunt or not hunt any cache. Oh, and I'd imagine they'd know it if someone got seriously hurt.....at least, I think I'd know it if I got seriously hurt.....
  16. Not every cache is for every person. If you don't feel safe, skip it and move on to the next one. Just because you don't think it's safe doesn't mean it needs removed from the website.
  17. Ok, I noticed this is a really old thread that just recently got bumped. However, 1.5 is still listed as in beta. Any idea when it's going to move into the "stable version" status?
  18. I haven't tried S&T in a few versions, but at the time I was using it last, I believe you had to enter coordinates in decimal degrees HDD.dddd, not degree and decimal minutes, like gc.com uses. (HDD MM.mmm) That could have changed, if so, I'm sure someone who's used it more recently will chime in.
  19. I seem to be on a borderline and have both Keystone and OReviewer covering my area. They both are great at what is mostly a thankless job, nice idea for something to thank them.
  20. Apparantly you don't get that there's a difference between telling people incorrectly that "this will do what you asked" and "I know of nothing that will do what you asked, but here's something that will do what I think you might have really wanted". The people in this thread (and many others) did the first. Apparantly, you have no problem with people just spewing misinformation all over the forums, but others of us are tired of seeing it.
  21. Is there a historic marker at the site? You could make a multicache and use information from it as a virtual stage, and have the actual cache hidden somewhere better/safer.
