Hi Neil I use to have the basic Etrex and had the same problem. You can download a free geocaching program called CacheMagnet. The Virtual Earth maps are great and the aerial/birdseye function is fantastic. But it will also resolve your problem. http://cachemagnet.googlepages.com/ After you have loaded your waypoints you can use the transform function (Under File Menu) to change the waypoint. It removes the leading GC, and adds the first character of the cache type, and a single number for terrain rating at the end. It does not matter if your GPSr cuts out any of these last 2 digits. My Venture HC arrived yesterday, and I was very pleased with the unit except for one thing. The pointer lags by 15 - 30 secs when navigating to a waypoint. The distance remaining goes down but the pointer takes for ever to respond. After reading some other posts on the subject, it seems to be a common problem. In fact it is so disappointing compared with my two older units, that I am returning it today for a refund. I might just go for the basic Etrex H, and put up with the restrictive character names. But does the Etrex H suffer from the same pointer lag? Do any Etrex H users know? Regards Tarot

Hi Everyone I have just ordered the Etrex Venture HC to replace my original yellow etrex and yellow GPS60. I know it has limitations with memory, but my main reason for purchase was to have the high sensitivity receiver. I would have gone for the Etrex H, but wanted the USB connection and extra characters for waypoint name. Well I am waiting for delivery, I have read the manual online and looked at many posts on here but I still have a couple of questions. 1. Does the 24 Mg of memory only get used for maps, or is it also used for storing the waypoints. Could I put in a 24 Mg map and still be able to download waypoints. 2. The latest firmware update (2.50) as of Jan 02 2008, has added a Custom POI feature. Has anyone used this on the Venture HC, and can it be used to store cache hint information. Also any general comments or hints from Venture HC users would be appreciated. Kind Regards Tarot.

Thank you to everyone who has replied to this topic. I did contact Garmin with regard to any future updates and received the following reply. When I do need to strip the characters, I use the free software "cachemagnet", the download can be found here. http://sourceforge.net/projects/cachemagnet In the file menu choose "Transform", this removes the GC and replaces two extra characters at the end of the name to indicate the terrain difficulty. If these are chopped off by the Etrex, is does not matter. The maps in Cachemagnet are great, and the bird’s eye view is far better than Google Earth. Regards Tarot.

Hi Everyone I currently use the original Etrex and am considering getting the newer H version for the better reception in difficult areas. I am happy with the non mapping units because I use my car sat nav for road navigation to the sites. My question is : Does the new H version have the same limit of six characters for the waypoint name, or has this issue been fixed with a firmware update?. I know that you can strip some characters from the waypoint name with 3rd party software, but I like to just use mapsource or direct downloads from GC.com. Regards Tarot

FANTASTIC Thanks Brian I downloaded the software today and tried it out. It is just what I have been looking for, and very simple to use. I really like the option to print the reports in various detail, and the export to ipod (if I had one) is another cool feature. Once again thank you for making this software free to geocachers. Hi Andy I was considering buying the Etrex H, can you tell me if this latest version allows for more than 6 characters in the waypoint field. Although there are ways around this, it was quite annoying on the previous yellow etrex. Regards Tarot

I had the same problem with my Garmin GPS 60, and cured it by re-installing the firmware. I did not use the WebUpdater, but downloaded the update and loaded it manually. Once you have installed the firmware, you have to initialize the unit as though it was new. It's worth a try, but save anything stored on your unit before you start. I have just telephoned Garmin CS Europe, to ask about the waypoint character length in the new units. The answer was : "I don't know, I haven't seen them yet because they are new. I’ll be able to tell you more when they come in” It makes you wonder !! Tarot

I am using the basic yellow etrex v3+ and am very happy with it. I think the extra sensitive chip would be a great advantage in tree cover where I do have some problems. I would be tempted to get the new basic Etrex H, if they have also increased the number of characters you can use for waypoint names. This being my only other gripe with my unit. Do all of the current etrex range have a limit to 6 characters at the moment ? Tarot

Jeremy replied to another thread regarding this problem. His suggestion was to hold down the shift key and then refresh while on the cache page. This seems to work for me sometimes. Tarot

I was getting the same problem, but using the (Shift-Refresh) on the main cache page has sorted it out. Thanks Jeremy
