  1. In the course of my regular work I am in contact with persons who have addictive issues among others, it prompted me to think about becoming a Psychologist after retirement and have a second career, so I started looking into the subject. I am no expert, but Flow Psychology seemingly fits the addictive model. There is no doubt in my mind that there are persons who are in fact addicted, they have withdrawl and some I have seen actually need a "fix" or a find and until they do they are anxious and agitated. Look up Flow Psychology and see for yourself. Some of the elements are: 1.Clear goals that, while challenging, are still attainable.Find Cache 2.Strong concentration and focused attention. Self explanatory 3.The activity is intrinsically rewarding. It is fun 4.Feelings of serenity; a loss of feelings of self-consciousness. 5.Timelessness; a distorted sense of time; feeling so focused on the present that you lose track of time passing. Quick park and grab that actually took 30 minutes 6.Immediate feedback. Bingo , log it , smiley 7.Knowing that the task is doable; a balance between skill level and the challenge presented. 8.Feelings of personal control over the situation and the outcome. 9.Lack of awareness of physical needs. 10.Complete focus on the activity itself. Flow theory also talks about dopamine flooding and the good feelings that come from that, that is where addictive hold takes place. Look it up for yourself. Enjoy it but don't let it control your life.
  2. NYC is a wonderful place to ride a bike, the bikeway and central park have been mentioned. But the best bit of advice I have seen here is: "Don't look like a tourist" Yeah you certainly don't want to appear normal in NYC, so look like a native.
  3. An FYI only which may be of interest to cachers. http://e2ma.net/go/7416229894/208795831/230473284/35973/goto:http://www.nynjtc.org/job-openings
  4. Have fun Get out with people Maybe hide a few Maybe run an event
  5. Open caching has a system and site that is almost counter intuitive. Geocaching.com is kind of like a favorite old sweatshirt , very comfortable. Lastly, I have met some great people throught the social interaction afforded by geocaching. That interaction was enabled through geocaching.com. The goodwill from that aspect translates into loyalty to ground speak.
  6. You are kidding aren't you? Apparently the concept of game is not grasped by some.
  7. We've already had enough snow for this winter, thank you very much. The people of Connecticut support me in this observation. Halloween Nor'easter---so soon they forget.
  8. How would one make a rubber gasket? Goe to Home Depot in the plumbing dept, they sell plumbers rubber gastkets ready to be cut.

I can personally attest to its ability to waterproof. That is me with the canoe I built using the same. Cedar Strips ripped from barn siding.
  10. would have been a good cache series. I did the same thing in my town as a cache series a few years ago. The first stop involved picking up a cd rom with a power point presentation. It was well received. Sadly. I conclude that the challenge thing is falling flat locally. I base this on discussions with my compatriots, who say they wanted traditional virtual caches and got something lacking. There has been a lot of negativity in this arena.

  12. Oh, I don't know if lazy is the proper term, more precisely terms such as less attentive or less respectful might be more appropriate. For this year I have seen a whole lot of cachers get involved in more than just caching, there is an event this Saturday at Apshawa , there have been a number of CITO events and Social Events, there is CTTS coming up which requires effort. Polskikrol has had a couple of CITOs this year with hard working cachers in attendance in the Meadowlands and Essex Hospital. The guys pictured above have been anything but lazy in their efforts to re-hab trails on High Mtn. There have been a number of really good placements, such as the PMolan Morris Canal Series and the Gabakufu Micro Series which evidenced creativity and humor. So maybe we have had a little slippage in some areas that we can address going forward, but we as a group still seem to be able to move forward. I see some efforts to build on caching for the greater good.
  13. We did our trail maintenance hike this AM on the Blue Trail at High Mountain, if other trails are in similar condition there is a lot of work for maintainers to perform, maybe Geocachers could look into helping out through the NYNJTC, or through some of the Cachers who maintain and may need some help. Ramapo, Citicar , Weathernowcast, accbd, stillnoname and I did yeomans duty ( especially Citicar as he went with Bob Simpson of the Wayne Environmental Commission and helped him on his trail yeserday) completed the trail and have it cleared, there was some minor rerouting needed and there are still a couple of spots with hanging deadwood as in the picture. Be careful if conditions are windy as we suspect there is a lot of wood hanging in the canopy.
  14. And just today I was getting the business for suggesting that an unpermitted geocache on property posted with no trespassing private property signs be archived. Placement with sensitivity to the perception of non cachers should be stressed in the guidelines. Which would eliminate half of the lpc
  15. A group of us are maintaining the Blue Trail in High Mtn. Wayne under auspices of NYNJTC. The same are going to walk the trail on Sunday morning at around 7:30 AM, leaving from the Chicopee Drive Trailhead, we are checking on downed trees from the storm, but cachers are welcomed to join in the walk and pick up the caches along the way, so if you would like to walk with a congenial group you are most welcomed.
  16. http://www.northjersey.com/news/132605918_Bloomingdale_police_arrest_two_in_connection_with_recent_crime_spree.html Norvin Green State Park is the site of repeated episodes of break ins over the years. The Otterhole was a particularly lousy place to park. When I saw this article I thought that perhaps if any of our clan had been victimized they might want to check with the local authorities to see if any of their gear might have been recovered. Recently , my own car was broken into--they stole an auto gps that they probably got 10 bucks for, but it cost me 265 for the window.
  17. I would so be interested, for nothing screams out FUN for a pudgy 61 year old than an agressive hike with Polskikrol , but I am committed to painting the kitchen tomorrow and was hoping to get over to the Apshawa CITO event for some time on Sunday. Maybe in the next lifetime. Don't forget Apshawa CITO on Sunday.
  18. My son is a Ravens fan, for his birthday he wanted tickets, we obliged and I got to drive him along with two of his Jet's Fan friends to Baltimore for an 8 PM game. We arrived mid afternoon, I parked, they went off to do their football stuff and I got to walk about the Inner Harbor area. There are a few caches I had not done on previous visits and interspersed with them I was able to do several local Challenges. It was a lot of fun for someone alone in Baltimore--and I was indeed alone for everyone else was going to the game. So for an enjoyable location I would say Baltimore.
  19. Caching in Northern NJ would not have been same without your gentlemanly presence. Caching in general would not be the same without your presence as a patient teacher and guide to the forums. Thanks. I like to think that I pattern my game after the way you do things. To the next 10.
  20. We are not going off road, we saw goose hunters last week. No rifle hunting.
  21. Beer and hemp protein -----hmmmmm sounds , well just delightful. But I think we would like your recipe. We are going to try to go again this coming Sunday to Stewart State Park, leaving out of the parking lot at Weed Road and Rt. 207 at 7 AM or thereabouts. We enjoyed last Sunday so much. Mtn /trail/hybrid bike . Nice paced.
  22. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=8621267d-bd92-4018-b00f-68a2ab5de872 Do a pocket query off the cache above. Use same type. You are coming in from out of town and to ease you into the City , I would suggest the virtual caches of NYC. I recently did a grouping of virtual caches in Washington DC and found that it is an easy way to learn the lay of the land so to speak. NYC caches can be difficult due to the muggle factor and the small log only type of cache. Both of those impediments are eliminated with the virtual. I do enjoy NYC for caching, but most of the time I have gone on bicycle.
  23. Or your could have come with us, we had a delightful morning in the crisp cool air. We rode several miles found a nice smathering of caches, enjoyed each others company, took some pictures, told some jokes , laughed a little and are looking forward to going back. And best part yet, it did not take us 2 days to recover for we are not into self flaggelation. And as we like to say: Why walk when you can ride.
  24. New Group Outing Planned for this coming Sunday. All Early Risers Welcomed---Mountain/trail/hybrid bike better for this. The terrain will be flat. Subject to the usual modifications due to weather, and unforseen circumstances beyond control. I am planning on visiting Stwart State Park one more time before hunding season, I plan on doing mtn bike and I plan on going Sunday , leaving at 6 sharp from NJ. It is an hours ride, I plan on riding and doing as many caches as I can do I am going to prepare ahead of time so I am not wasting too much time on arrival. So my plan is arrive, unload , strap on pack and ride without to much frou/frou. I went up the thru way to exit 17 and backed down to the park. The parking area is right near the cache coords listed below on Barton Road. Anyone else interested , . Bug spray a must. PARKING AT N 41° 28.485 W 074° 12.670
