  1. How do we stop people from submitting things like fence posts, a sneaker left in the woods and rotting carcasses? I can not tell if you are asking a new question attempting to respond to my questions. If the latter, you have not responded properly. For you have not identified issues, nor a real reason for opposition. Again if it is your personal preference, then it rises no higher than my personal preference. If the former, I will answer by saying what business is it of anyone else, if they met guidelines . Not every cache, virtual, earth, locationless or physical meets the same level of quality . No one should insist that they do, for if that were the case, there would perhaps be only 10 hiders in any given geographical area and the numbers finders would soon run out of targets.
  2. "Those in favor of bringing back virtual would be wise to consider the real reasons some are opposed to bringing them back at least without addressing some of the issues they caused" What exactly are the "real reasons"some are opposed ? What were "some of the issues" they caused? Are you opposed because you have a personal preference--if that is your reason it has no greater validity than my personal preference that they return. I never had an issue with a virtual cache. For that matter I don't have issues with other types , with the only exception being one evil Harry Dolphin Puzzle. What should it matter to anyone else, it is my game too.
  3. Did a virtual the other day 250 miles from home, and it gave me pleasure. I don't see a need to adjust the settings. I never had a problem with virtuals as they were.
  4. Make me the sole arbiter of Virtual Listings and you won't be disappointed. My dear old Dad used to say: Every once in awhile you will be going one way and the entire world (every last person on the world) is going the other way. That is the time to consider, even for an instant that you may be wrong. You may not be, but chance are you are. On this one,I submit that those who are agains Virtuals have never taken the time to even consider that they may be wrong. I suggest they are wrong because they would deny me an enjoyment of an aspect of the game that I have enjoyed from the inception and my enjoyment does them no foul. Their anal fixation on the existence of a box and log is laughably simplistic.
  5. Sorry, was working off an I Pad and in case some people didn't know there are things you can't do on an I pad, like save links. And on top of it I was really upset by the proposal to fine un licensed bicycles 100 dollars. Yup. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=9a7ae3df-65fc-4b93-80f1-866cf1a8f003 I would recommend that those persons with an upside down hide to find ratio might consider hiding at the areas of archived caches, thus providing a service to the game and avoid the geo perjorative term of Lump. As used in context. " That cacher is a real Lump" There were some good spots on that list, especially the one at Ft Lee, what a great cache location that one was.
  6. I have a book mark list of historical caches , it is stale and never really got sufficient attention from me feel free to use it for whatever.
  7. Passaic County is apparently going to tackle the condition of its parks, which are notoriously forlorne. In that connection, they are seeking a new parks director. Anyone interested: I know several persons I have met through geocaching that would be emminently qualified. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.northjersey.com%2Fnews%2F112791259_County_park_system_seeks_renewal.html&ei=iRwrTZf8K4nAsAPJ2uWGBw&usg=AFQjCNHxwCEbXM7jw7quwRqLT2QQYEUBCQ
  8. Which has the interesting stuff in it, the little coffee shop that you frequent or the copy of Weird Washington ? In looking at one of the caches that was listed as a Weird NJ cache and location, I came upon the story and will be placing a cache at the historical spot in the near future. Some of the weirdness is not really weirdness but historical oddity.
  9. Couple of questions regarding the list, if you don't mind. How Did you generate the List ? A straight up PQ does not seem to do the trick. Is it GSAK generated. I kind of stopped using GSAK when all the paperless niceties were obtained from GPS mnfctr. Perhaps it would be a good thing to re visit as I always liked the program.
  10. Some one should turn this list into a Challenge Series.
  11. Every year for the last several years I have invited those who might be interested in riding in the Five Borough Bike Tour in NYC to ride with our little group, which grew out of our meeting through Geocaching. It is that time again, so even though they have raised the price of a ticket to ride we are still planning on doing it again. When the weather warms we usually throw together some conditioning rides , which almost always involve a little bike caching. I bring this up now, because although the ride is scheduled for May 1 20011, sign up is February 1 , and can only be done on-line. The expectation is that the field will be filled very shortly thereafter. If you have an interest, google BikeNY.org and sign up for E Mail notices. If you have interest in joining our group , let me know and we will keep you informed. We usually have a great time and we really have had wonderful rides since. You can see us above, 6th row right side.
  12. 6 consecutive days in 2006, which probably was vacation on Cape Cod, where I will take my bike and do a few caches. I can safely say I am not addicted. I usually go for a hike or bike on Sunday AM, and do some caching. I took my pup with me this AM, and when the snow started flying in earnest we headed back to car, leaving a cache for next time. If you can leave one for next time ,you are not addicted.
  13. http://www.co.bergen.nj.us/bcparks/maps/RamapoCampingSites.pdf Why go to Glen Gray when you can camp right in Ramapo. Imagine wakind up and emerging from your tent overlooking beautiful Scarlet Oak Pond to be confronted by 6000 dog walkers from Leonia and their pooping pets. Sounds like a winner to me. There is also camping at Campgaw.
  14. Ramapo and citicar were telling us the improbable and highly unlikely story of finding a cache of that approximate vintage that had been hidden and never published. They contacted a person connected with the cache, who told them that it was their son's cache. He hid it,lost interest and never published. citicar said he found it, because he commented that a location looked like a good cache spot, thumped it with his hiking stick and got the tell tale ammo echo. They said they were going to claim FTF after they published it.
  15. No snow. Trails are a mixed bag of jersey rocky. Should not be a problem. There are many caches there.
  16. I have a better idea, go and harvest all those archived virtual caches and keep them for the day that virtuals return and then publish them on line. You will be a virtual god. And the return of them is planned. I think sooner than later for Garmin is going to want virtuals on their site too. People love virtuals. I have 5 waiting for the day of return and I can plug them in for publishing in a NY minute.
  17. Exactly what do you think the greeters and receipt checkers are doing? They are part of the security function. This company has surveillance cameras everywhere, look along the roof line, next time you go in. Nothing new under the sun.
  18. gerBiL is definitely well within the "safe zone" of Ramapo Valley County Park.. Bill See info link below. http://www.nynjtc.org/content/top-10-nohun...-and-new-jersey
  19. Central park, NYC. Seriously......around this time of year it can not be beat. I told my wife that if she gets up early next sunday I will shoe her the sights
  20. I graduated from NMU, I suggest snow shoe caches , put the about ten feet up in a tree and they should be right at waist level by Jan . The other suggestion for getting through winter in the U P, as I recall ,although a long time ago, was Strohs, Hamms, Blatz or some other variation.
  21. There is a virtual that is the Empire State Building, so you would have to go pretty big. Myself, I would concentrate on hiding something that I myself would like to find. Welcome to the game.
  22. Because it is such a beautiful day in Northern New Jersey , I decided to go out at lunch for a new cache closeby. Hidden by a newbie. Found same, not a bad hide, one that has been used before, coordinates good, in a nice spot--only problem the container. Metal candy tin. New one down the road (cause you just can't go for one) also a newbie hide. Good coordinates, nice spot, good hide , only problem container--one of those paper clip holders with the two clips sold by staples. Hiding is a lot harder than finding. But it boils down to coordinates being accurate, with a good hide in a decent spot with a proper container. It comes together with some experience.
  23. Worst idea ? Just wait, I am full of ideas Hey, there you go, my idea just got peer reviewed .
  24. Now that I have your attention, let me expand it to say, peer review after the cache is placed, approved and published. So that the owner can gauge exactly how the local community feels about any individual placement. The reviewer is confronted with perhaps 100 new submissions per week, they have no time to section the wheat from the chaffe, that is something the local community would of necessity have to do. With cachers popping in and out like a revolving door the quality of caches placed seems to be lowering. A case in point, a well meaning new cacher places a glass pill bottle in a base of a hollow tree in a swamp, that floods regularly. That pill bottle will be flotsam in 4 months. Another places a cache in an alleyway, within 10 feet of a private residence backyard--did they not thing that people living there might be disturbed by strangers coming into the alley. Anectdotal, yes but that is a perception I have come to. I believe that the local organization can help to address some of this , along with the abandoned, in need caches --when some of the enthusiastic but short lived cachers abandon the field leaving behind geo litter.
  25. The cache reviewer does not review for quality of hide. That is one reason why I believe local groups should have peer review .
