  1. Thanks folks--Saves me a lot of hunting around. KeepOnTruckin
  2. Just had my 60csx delivered and I would like to upgrade the memory chip. I have read posts before re: maybe the unit not working right with certain ones. Any quick pointers on what to buy would be appreciated. I hope to put in as much of City Select v 6.0 and US Topo as possible (second half of licenses from my 60cs.) Thanks. Nick KeepOnTruckin
  3. From the number of maps listed in each sw package, it looks like the Navigator maps must be quite a bit bigger. Anybody have any thoughts about the advisability and/or likllihood of my being able to find a C/S v.7 as a compromise? Thanks. Nick KeepOnTruckin
  4. It appears that the maps are bigger in City Navigator and the 60CS is memory limited. I’m always messing around with my map-sets every time I go someplace new and it’s kind of a pain. I imagine that with larger maps it will be tougher to fine-tune what I need. But I guess if I want updated maps, I’ll have to upgrade to CN sooner or later. Thanks. KeepOnTruckin
  5. Happy New Year To All, I have been running City Select v.6 in my 60CS since its purchase in June 2004. I now see that version 7 is out. Were there any changes made to how the software works either in a computer and/or in the GPSr, or was it only an update of the maps and POIs, etc.? Also, what is the difference between City Select and City Navigator? Maybe I knew back when I bought everything, but not now. Lastly, any thoughts on whether to bother upgrading from v.6? I am generally very happy with its navigating abilities up here in New England, as well as places up and down the east coast that we have traveled to. While I usually have no objection to spending $ for new fun and useful stuff, will I be getting anything that I don't already have? Thanks. KeepOnTruckin /s/ Nick
  6. Vlad I thought I had tried that, but I did it again to be sure—and it worked. BUT-- I then remembered that, 1) I had not locked on since saving my track info and deleting the active track, and, 2) I had not locked on since installing the 3.5 firmware. So to make sure, I locked on, went to demo, and tried to do a route from somewhere else, and—no good. I then wiped out the track, shut the unit off, turned it on, went right to demo, and—still no good. Must have been the firmware change. No matter what I do, the map shows the most recent lock-on location with the arrowhead pointer, with a question mark over it, flashing on and off. Even when I move to another map reference. And it uses that recent lock-on as the start point for any routing I want to mess around with.
  7. Is there a way to get the 60cs to calculate a route starting at a point other than where you are or where you were when the unit was last locked on to the satellites? For example, I often mess with the unit while at work in the evenings, planning trips for later. Since I will be leaving from my home, I want the start point to be home, not my work, or wherever else the unit was last locked onto. But it will always start the route from that last point, route me to my home, the to wher I want to go. (If it matters, I am always attempting to do this with the GPS OFF and in the Demo Mode (and the unit obviously on!)) Quite frustrating. KeepOnTruckin
  8. One or two other folks are doing benchmarks, which, as has been mentioned, takes some of the fun out of it. Finding one that someone got to last week is not the same as finding one that has not been reported in 50 or more years. I reported a changed circumstance to the NGS folks and they updated the data on it, although it looks like the Geocache folks do not bother to update their own info. 9. Anybody have any idea on how long Garmin is apt to do anything v-a-v price of upgrading to v6.0? I just bought my 60cs and CitySelect v.5 on July 2. Seems knd of soon to have to pay another $75. KeepOnTruckin
  10. So have you tried doing what I suggested above? Hit MENU again at this point to get the option to "Select Map" . Choose the City Select Map and see if the smaller towns now appear. If you don't go through this step of specifying the map then only cities on the basemap will appear in a City Search. Peter, Have followed your instruction, and… A new discovery—not yet doing all I want, but getting there in a roundabout way… As you suggest, at the Find, Cities, Menu, (containing Find By Name, Nearest Containing, Select Map, Change Reference) Select Map shows “RecretionalRoutable Hig”, North American City Sel, US Topo—East, and Use Best Maps. Entering on North American City or US Topo both give all Cities, even extremely small ones (including what I have been seeking), as well as non-municipality neighborhoods, villages, etc. Entering on RecreationalRoutable or Use Best Maps both give what appears to be the lackluster list which appears if you just do Find, Cities, and it then shows “All Categories Near Map Pointer”. It must default to the basemap. At least now I know how to find what I seek. Any idea if this default can be changed? In the Setup, Map Setup page, I have usually Show-All selected unless I am going off-road. Turning off the basemap does nothing to change what I have just discussed. Examples include Heath, MA and Conway, MA. These towns will not show up in a search by name, but can be found as explained above. Not that big a deal, as long as I can find them, but if I know a name, but not necessarily anything near it to get me in the neighborhood, it can be trickier to find. Any thoughts on the following: After finding, for instance a street, address, town, or whatever, then going directly to Map (when working at home to setup hikes, for instance), the display goes to the location, but at 30 or 50 mile zoom. Is there a way to change the default scale? Quite the pain to have to hit the In button 10 or 12 times every time I go to a different location. And, just for idle curiosity, in the map set-up area, does anyone know what “Land Cover” refers to? I keep changing the setting to try to figure it out, but nothing seems to change. Thanks for great input. KeepOnTruckin
  11. All of that works for me. Oddly enough, going through the sequence as described will show a map which then displays most (still not all, but many otherwise un-indexed ones) of the small towns on it. But from that map display, if I do a search for nearest cities, many of the ones actually showing on the map as Jones Twp., or Smith Twp. Will not be listed as nearby cities (I know—they are towns….) But as I said, if I do a search through addresses: after the state, the next data bit it asks for is City. Many of the small towns (although still not all) that do not show up in a direct City search will show up here. Passing over Number and hitting enter over the Street Name will get the list of the Streets. Very frustrating. Anyway, next issue: After finding, for instance a street or address in a small town, then going directly to Map (when working at home to setup hikes, for instance), the display goes to the location, but at 30 or 50 mile zoom. Is there a way to change the default scale? Quite the pain to have to hit the In button 10 or 12 times every time I go to a different location. And just for idle curiosity, in the map set-up area, does anyone know what “Land Cover” refers to? I keep changing the setting to try to figure it out, but no dice. KeepOnTruckin
  12. Mapping Issue: I have loaded into my Garmin 60cs the City Select v5 and US Topos for the areas of New England where I travel. But when I do a find by Cities, many of the smaller towns do not show up. When I do a find by all POIs, and put in the name of the town, many POIs starting with the name of the town will show up, ie., Town School Department, Town, MA, or Town Bakery, Town, MA. Why not the town itself in the City search? They show up by the town name in the find/city area of the MapSource software in the computer, but not in the GPS unit. In the gps, I can zoom in with the map, scroll around, and often find the town, then do a go-to, and I am off. Likewise, if I look for addresses, many/most streets are not there. But if I zoom in on the map, I can see the streetnames, and scrolling around will often cause addresses (street and number) to show on the map. I can then do a go-to from that screen. Did I not put the mapset together properly when readying for loading into the unit? Is a setting off re: size of municipalities or something? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. KeepOnTruckin

  14. Am using MapSource North American City Select v5, along with MapSource US Topo, and firmware 3.40. (will be getting the new Beta version soon) KoT
  15. The 60cs locked-up on me twice yesterday. Both times it was recalculating an auto-route when I decided to not follow the route set out by the unit. Had to shut down and bring back up. Funny screen fading, etc. A week or so ago, the display screen went crazy, like the old TVs when the horizontal hold let go. Had to shut it off that time, too. Have not lost any of the data in the unit when it happens, but it sure does make me nervous. Has anyone else had this sort of experience? Any thoughts about it? Thanks. KeepOnTruckin
  16. Just got my Garmin 60CS, along with the US Topo and City Select. I loaded a mapset into the unit of both the Topo and the City Select for the areas I generally intend to use the unit in, and have so far only used the auto-routing stuff (being totally new to a GPS with any mapping capability.) So….how do I get the unit to switch to the Topo map when I get to an area for hiking, geocaching, etc. I know, I could probably spend an hour or more reading the manuals and searching the forums, but having already spent half an hour doing so, with no luck… Thanks. 17. Thanks folks, for all the helpful hints... Keep them comin' What is it about the electronic compass that you find objectionable? KOT
  18. Checked out the above link showing GeoC screen samples on the 60CS. I see the screens seem to show a little detail about the cache. Can it also display other info such as the narrative descriptions, clues, if present, nearest benchmarks, as well as caches. etc. KOT
  19. Coming off a 12XL, I know nothing about how much memory is needed for what maps. I expect some topos will be used. I thought the Roads & Recreation software looked good for what I expect to do, but now I see it is discontinued. What does the Geocaching feature of the 60CS do? KOTruckin
  20. Have long been looking to upgrade from my old Garmin 12XL to a *real* GPS, and long-expecting to get a 76s. But lo and behold, I now see the 60CS and soon-to-be-released 76CS. Too much $, but the Mrs. says she will pay half for our upcoming anniversary. So the question is, what does the special Geocaching feature on the 60CS do for the Geocaching experience? It looks like the 76CS will not have it. Sine the wife is paying half, my instinct is to wait for the 76CS and get the better unit, but without the GC feature, I am unsure what to do. The 60CS manual does not seem to say much about it. Is it worth it? Extra memory on the 76, or GC feature on the 60…?? Any thoughts? Thanks. KOTruckin
