  1. Camping AT the spot? A backpacking trip? hmmm. . . that may change everything. Let us know more of the specifics.
  2. I am in Orange County . . . No free maps that I am aware of As WaylessWood stated, New York / New Jersey Trail Conference has maps you can purchase. In Orange County, we have maps for Schunemunk Mountain (several excellent caches), Black Rock (lots of great caches), Storm King Mountain (four good caches), as well as quite a few local parks. If MTB is your thing, you may want to check out Stewart State Forest (Free Maps!, Even Better/Free Map!).
  3. I, too, would love to be there, but 189.1 miles from my home makes this one unlikely.
  4. Thoreau said it well when, in Civil Disobedience, he wrote: "The only obligation which I have a right to assume is do do at any time what I think right." He also wrote, in the same essay, that "Unjust laws exist: shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once?" Just because the land/trails are closed does not make it right. To make a point, one should passively resist the unjust law. A letter writing campaign may work; but also doing what we do (hike) may also work. I will be there. And I will assume responsibility knowing full well the possible outcomes. -- does it matter if I am from New York?!?
  5. Guard Rail Series 3: A View of Schunemenuk (and of the viaduct). Super Easy.
  6. Well, since the event is NOT at the Megaliths, but the Megaliths is something that if you attend the event you MUST see, then the answer can be found here. If my recollection serves me correctly, the round trip hike was just about 6 ~ 6.5 miles. The first mile is relatively flat. The next two are straight uphill. The last quarter is flat. When I say uphill, I mean a good uphill climb. Once again, the event is not at the Megaliths, but close by. How many people have actually attended a 4-star terrain event?!?
  7. Weathercastnow and buttaskotch -- this is what you missed by sleeping in this morning!!! The 8.5 mile hike that netted 14 caches!!! The elevational gain for the walk. Sean and Sue (Team Divi Divi) and I met at the Route 94 parking and made a thru-hike to the other end. It was a great morning, great hike, great caches. They even hid Packanak's cache that they won at the last event.
  8. Only 100 days until GeoJamboree 6!!! (100 Days means 2400 Hours or 144000 Minutes or 8640000 Seconds!) Last year's attendance was close to 250 people; double that and you've got yourself that MEGA event that this link was discussing.
  9. As I stated on the event page, I will be unable to attend. (And I am NOT happy about it, either.)
  10. If the hike includes the Megaliths, then you are looking at about 6 ~ 7 miles . . . uphill what will seem like both ways! Starting Elevation is about 450 feet. The summit of Schunemunk (which we will be close to) is about 1660 feet. Compared to the Ramapo Hike, the snow might equalize the distance, but nothing can account for the UPHILL . . . . Great views, awsome hikes . . . . well worth it.
  11. Your maps are not correct here. You've shown the Shawangunks, when in actuallity, you want NYNJTC maps for West Hudson -- Schunemnunk/Black Rock/Storm King. And here is the link for The Megaliths. The hike will allow one to grab My Favorite Hike, Take a Break, Gigantor, and The Megaliths (in that order). This link might also be of help (I think I got the right one).
  12. You will LOVE the Megaliths. It is, indeed, a strenuous hike, but the views are the best in the area. I may even tromp up there with y'all. Federal Hill ~ Haven't done it yet. . . March 22nd is probably ok . . . but the wife has to give me permission first! [edited: to represent that fact that I have NOT done Federal Hill yet]

    AMMO CANS

I just ordered one dozen off ebay, and once you factor in shipping, the cost comes to just about $5 per can. Not bad, I would say.
  14. Thank you one and all, but if it weren't for all of you hiding these great caches, none of us would have any milestones!!! If you are withing 2 hours of any of the Sunrise Hikes, think about joining us. We have a great time, and even find a few caches along the way! Again, thanks to all the CO's for making my first 1000 quite the adventure.
  15. hahahaha, I thought who let in Hannibal on the hike! I may be smiling, but I'm freezing!
  16. And here she is, adding another find to her stats page . . . #300 Well done, and thanks for the geology lesson (I really wasn't listening).
  17. Regardless of the snow, this event is a go! (Ok, so we may not find many caches, but the landscape should be spectacular!!!)
  18. I plan to hike . . . even in the snow. At least we'll be moving, and that should keep us warm. Team Divi Divi is making plans for possibly heading over to the CITO after this. I would think that would be a fine idea . . . .
  19. I've seen your logs, and followed them around Harriman one day! It was a pleasure to meet you . . . Well done.
  20. Get the boots ready! Get the gear in order! The weekend is quickly approaching . . . .
  21. My plans for this weekend (other than the Sunrise Hike) is to build my GeoJamboree Sign. Put that on your list of shtuff to bring!
  22. And your wife allows you to bring "her" with you?!?
