Hey Night Stalker Thanks for the step by step. I am new to geocaching and GPS units. 4 days new in fact. Yup, Santa was nice to me. I did the firmware upgrade 'cuz I heard I should. However I had no idea what benefit I would receive nor would I be a good judge of that benefit. Well, with two caches under my belt I now recognize the value in the rubber band option. I look forward to my next hunt wherein I can take advantage of your step by step instructions. Corey

Santa was good to me and gave me the Sportrak Pro. While I can't offer you a comparison, I am quite impressed upon first notice. It's ability to lock onto 5 or more satellites while indoors is impressive.

I'm a newbie too. However after searching on-line and doing quite bit of "value" hunting, I found a deal that's hard to beat. If you haven't already purchased a GPS unit, Costco has a great bundle pack. I purchased the Magellan Sportrak Pro for $289 but there is $100 rebate. Included in the bundle for $189 is a car mount, Mapsend software, belt holder, car power adapter and the pc cable. I couldn't decided if I wanted to spend $125 more for the Garmin Vista which includes an altimeter and barameter. I was relieved to learn that the mapping software included in the Sportrak bundle has elevation markers too!

I can't decide whether or not to purchase the sportrak pro or the vista. It's my understanding that the Vista only accepts Garmin software. What about the magellan? Will the Magellan accept other company's mapping software? Also, any recommendations between the vista and the sportrak pro? Corey

Does the Sportrak Pro have a compass, barometer, or altimeter like the Vista?

Does anybody have a preference between these two? If so why. I'm looking to buy my first gps unit and am stuck between these two. Can somebody offer some wisdom? Sincerely, Corey Young corey.young@verizon.net
