    New Site Bugs

As someone else mentioned, the jeeep link appears to be broken, so it made/makes sense to take it out. For anyone who cares, I just modified the original "Geocaching Map Linker" greasemonkey script and submitted it to userscripts.org. This means the Google Earth (and UK Ord. Survey) links work again..
  3. Heh.. you beat me to it. I'm not in the UK, but I *love* this script. I don't often visit these forums, wish I would have known of your post about half an hour ago. I just submitted "Geocaching Map Linker V2" on userscripts.org (and gave "Paul Dixon" his due). I took a slightly different approach than you, but the results are the same - it works again.
  4. I vote for #3.. #4 I like too.. reminds me of baseball.
  5. I don't frequent these forums that often, so my apologies if this is out of date. Anyways.. I've been known to stop by that cache (I live in Marietta) and pick up a bug or two without leaving one. I wouldn't classify it as a "prison" - that's a bit harsh. If I find myself in the area of this particular TB Motel, I'll stop by and pick up your bug. Drop me an email with which one it is. Not promising anything, but more than happy to do it if I'm in the area.
  6. And before I forget, you forgot to quote the rest of my comment. I referenced the grandfathered caches (which is why I was so excited that somebody else was paying attention!) AND "pocket caches" in the part of my post that you neglected to quote. Here's the rest of it for you, for continuity: That is all.
  7. Actually, your last comment there ("new" hides) isn't 100% accurate, but we'll let that one go. But yes! They are grandfathered! You know that, and I know that, and others know that.. but not everybody, evidently. There's a minor problem, though. See, the Guidelines also talk about Grandfathered caches: Geocaching.com Listing Guidelines - Grandfathered Guess what isn't listed or discussed there - in any way, shape, or form.
  8. Geocaching.com Listing Requirements/Guidelines There's the guidelines, last revised November, 2005. Am I missing something? If not, is it possible that - and I'm only supposing here - you might be? (If this doesn't make any sense to you, read my previous post. *Some* traveling caches *do* exist - albeit they are few in number.) Semantics. Yes, there are some that are grandfathered. None of the ones on my bookmark list are one of those. Semantics? Uh, ok. So when you say "Those guidelines state unequivocally that traveling caches are not allowed", should I take that to mean - semantically - that you're really saying "I'm just pulling stuff out of my arse"? Or is there another set of guidelines that we - the folx who actually hide and seek caches - should be aware of? Nonetheless, thank you for finally conceding the point that traveling caches ARE allowed on this site and DO exist, regardless of what exists on YOUR bookmark list. (And do note: I'm refering to those traveling caches that are A) grandfathered or B.) have received the requisite permissions - NOT "pocket caches.") Edit: Stupid emoticons.

  10. Yeah, it's easy to miss.. it was on the first page of this thread, compliments of Mopar: But as I said in my original post, I'm right there with you.. having an Iraq cache there is just wrong. Had I known about it while I was there, I certainly would have made my opinion verbally known. I didn't see it, and didn't know about it until I read this thread.
  11. (I just happened across this thread a few days after this post. I don't read the forums often, but had to reply to this.) "...traveling caches are not allowed." You 100% sure about that? Think carefully before you answer... Might want to stick the words "no longer" in for "not", change the period to a comma, and add the phrase "except those that have been grandfathered in and those that have gotten special approvals since." To rephrase it correctly: "Traveling caches are no longer allowed, except for those that have been grandfathered in and those that have gotten special approvals since." That said, duplicating a cache from Iraq is just wrong. Send 'em a "cache" in the form of a care package instead. Overall I enjoyed myself at GW4, with around 45 (forty-five) caches found and 3 events attended over a 4 day span. I agree that many people "all about the numbers" - but trying to lump everyone who attended GW4 as "just in it for the numbers" is just plain dumb. (Yes, I have about 2400 logged finds. I enjoy finding caches of all types, terrains, and difficulties. Does that make me all about the numbers? Don't think so. )
  12. Just tried to access my account page, and it asked me to log in. Tried to log in, and got: Server Error in '/' Application. Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown. Cookies?

Nope. Double-checked that first before my original posting just to make sure. It's set "until they expire." Here's soemthing new: Went to "forums" from gc.com, had to log in, which then presented me with the "Enter the forums" page. Clicked that, and I was on the forums as a guest. Had to log in *again* before viewing this forum and thread. I don't have third-party cookies selected in Firefox, which is moot anyways; I have my firewall universally set not to allow 3rd party cookies, web bugs, or private headers. If the latter (3rd party, web bugs, private headers) is the problem, then my question is: Why is it a problem? If one of them is a problem, which one? I suppose I could make an exception, but I'd rather know why they're being used first. I'll switch over to my RHEL box in a bit and see if I can tell whats-fer from there.

    Cookies?

Has the site overall changed it's cookie settings? All of the sudden I'm finding that I'm having to constantly log in to the site, especially if I'm being linked to it from elsewhere. What's strange is that if I'm viewing "My Account", then "View cache detials" from GSAK, a new tab opens in Firefox (which is the way I have it set) I have to log in again to view the cache details. I've gone through and blown out first Groundspeak/geocaching.com cookies, then all my cookies, and then finally all cookies/history/cache/etc. Same thing happens. More irritating than anything else, but I did notice one of the session.ID cookies is set to expire at end of session - I didn't tell it to do that.
  16. While I'd love to get a 60CSX, I can't justify it. My 60CS is working fine. It's not a GPS, but I *am* shopping around for a Uniden BCD396T. Still too pricey for my tastes, but I'm hoping one can be had for $300 in the next 8 months or so.

    Pretty Stars

    I second this idea.
  18. Count me in the Maha Power (via Thomas Distributing, link above) camp as well. I got the MH-C204W charger and 12 2500mAh batteries. Two in the 60CS, three each in the Rino 130 and a seperate FRS radio, 4 backups. AtlantaGal is also using Maha rechargeables now in her 76C that I got her as a present. Same charger, but with the 2300mAh battieries (2500 weren't avail yet at the time). We're quite pleased with the results we've been getting. No testing data available, except for I run the Rino for a few days at a time before swapping (15-20 hours?). She has it a bit easier, just swaps 2 batteries for the 2 on the charger.
  19. Ok, I"m doing this now, and it's working well. HOWEVER... Is there a way to PERMANENTLY change the database folder? Every time I start GSAK I gotta change the location. At loadtime it changes back to the default install location (in my case, c:\utils\geo\gsak\data, instead of u:\gsak\data). Thanks! I am struggling to think of a reason why this should be so (and I can't repeat) This setting is saved in the GSAK.ini file so it should automatically be a sticky setting. A bit of a long shot, but the only thing I can think of is that there has been a restore of your settings at some stage (File=>Restore) or for some reason your GSAK.ini file is not being updated with this setting. You can check the latter by making the change, exiting GSAK, then opening the GSAK.ini file in notepad and interrogating this entry: edtDataStore.Text= Wouldn't you know it, I can't get it to reproduce now either. I suspect I know what the problem was, but i can't prove it - network authentication. My prior problem was with permissions, but got that sorted. I noticed that my drive assignmetns weren't automagically taking effect after reboots, which is when I went "duh" and realized that I had to authenticate to the laptop. Switching some settings around solved that problem, so they auto-connect now. Could it be possible that if the drive wasn't mounted GSAK was defaulting back to it's installation folder? Regardless, it's "fixed", but I'll definitely keep an eye out in case it repeats.

  21. #1. Yes. Clyde has said that GSAK is not a true multi-user program (that allows two users simultaneously). However, you can put the databases in any folder on any networked machine and point to the same database folder from another installation of GSAK on another machine (through Tools>Options>General "Database Folder") as long as you don't have two installations of GSAK accessing the databases at the same time (i.e. run only one at a time). (CymSnip) EDIT: Heh.. had a "duh" moment and a bright idea right after posting. I figured it out, I think. I only had permissions on laptop machine set to "read". GSAK most definitely wants to "write", and right away. Changing permissions to Modify/create seems to have done the trick! Now I just gotta copy over my filters and saved settings and.. hmm, lots of other stuff, but oh well.
  22. This has been asked (and answered) several times in the past and I can't remember the answer since I didn't have two machines running in the past. With search now disabled on these forums, I can't find the answer. A peek at the FAQ didn't help, so I'm on to the help files and this post now. I've been running GSAK forever now on my laptop, but I've finally got my desktop back up and running. Laptop has GSAK and it's DB's installed at C:\GSAK. I've shared that dir and have mounted it as J:\ from my desktop. Question #1: Can I run GSAK on desktop and point it to the DB's on laptop? (first making sure GSAK is not running on laptop to avoid data collusion) Question #2: If #1 is "no", then I'm guessing it's "export DB on laptop and import on desktop" time. True? Thanks folx.
  23. Skip/forget about the case. Get a screen protector of some sort in the form of a PDA screen protector and cut it down, or - even better - get an InvisibleShield. Can't go wrong with either, though I highly recommend the latter. I disagree. Unless you are rough on your unit, the screen is tough enough to take regular use and some abuse. Adding anything on top of the screen will change the design of the unit (which is designed to withstand a lot of potential scratching). I have yet to scratch mine the tiniest bit. It reduces visability which promotes you using a brighter screen setting and then eating batteries. These Screen Shields are expensive. This company preys on the fears of people scratching their units. You generally won't own this unit long enough to scratching it badly unless you abuse it greatly. Don't waste the money. That's cool. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes. I just disagree with your disagreement. However, given the amount of screen cratches I've accumulated on every cellphone I've ever owned, as well as my Rino 110* (replaced), Rino 130* (replaced), and 60CS, a screen protector is a cheap AND worthwhile investment. Invisible Shields are just that - transparent. I used PDA protectors cut down on my GPS units, but they do offer a bit of glare - it's there, but tolorable. I don't see that on my 7520 Blackberry now. It disappears. For the investment - $4 for a pack of PDA protectors, $8 for an invisbileshield, which has a lifetime warranty - it's an easy decision to make. As for "changing the design of the unit" - they don't. One of the Garmin techs I spoke to (while having Rino 130 issues) actually recommened them. He said "They're cheap, and it doesn't affect the reception." Yeah, it could be said that I'm "hard" on my units - they hang on my belt clip (as does my phone) a lot of the times, and I do tend to bushwack. The Rinos - even with their Bash Guards, still get plenty of unwanted "action." But then, I bought 'em to be rugged. The 60CS, not so much, but it goes with me on out of town trips instead of saying in the truck. And it's a fairly rugged unit. * - The Rinos were each individually replaced under warranty at different times for different issues, NOT for "screen scratches". The 110 took a 10 minute swim 20ft down in a lake, and the 130 had severe microphone issues. Unfortunately, the 60CS is working flawlessly so I have to live with the small scratch in the middle of the screen.
  24. Chalk it up to "occasional freaky behavior". I've seen speeds of 200+ mph on my units when navigating turns... or, when in the woods, suddenly be transported miles from where I'm at and then back again when disappearing behind a ridge and reapppear in a different spot. It happens now and then. I wouldn't worry about it.
