  2. I was building my own IBM-PC compatibles and writing my own software. I connected to the college computer system with a 300 baud modem to do my programming home work. Later on I got a 2400 baud modem and set up my own BBS at my home. We played RPG games on the BBS. You had to call in and take your "moves" each day. Only locals played because it was a long distance call to contact some BBS computers. I was a member on 35 different BBS systems and faithfully logged on to 10 or 15 of them per day. Email was handled by FIDO-NET relays and while I could talk to some one across the country it took at least one day for the relays sometimes two or more days depending on the distance. Something like this could have been done using maps and directions, the GPS system and internet just makes it so much easier. If we had environmentalist 50,000 years ago we wouldn't have the Grand Canyon today. South Cache "To live only for some future goal is shallow. Ok, I'll bash you for a totally different reason: _being completely off topic_. Why does your self-justifying shopping list have anything to do with Geocaching? Because I can: "If you have a topic that doesn't quite fit anywhere else, post it here. " Boy I got a big one! Really you were too easy. Where is that Mopar dude??? 5. People like to bash me because I work for an oil company. Gasoline isn't that high. Perhaps his will put it into perspective. Diet Snapple: 16 oz $1.29..............$10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea: 16 oz $1.19............. $9.52 per gallon Gatorade: 20 oz $1.59 .....................$10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray: 12 oz $1.25 ...............$10.00 per gallon Brake Fluid: 12 oz $3.15 ................. $33.60 per gallon Vick’s Nyquil: 6 oz $8.35 ..................$178.13 per gallon Pepto Bismol: 4 oz $3.85 ................. $123.20 per gallon Whiteout: 7 oz $1.39 ........................ $25.42 per gallon Scope: 1.5 oz $0.99 ......................... $84.48 per gallon And this is the real kicker ... Evian water: 9 oz $1.49 ................. $21.19 per gallon $21.19 for WATER - and the buyer doesn’t even know the source. So, the next time you’re at the pump, be glad your car doesn’t run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, or God forbid Pepto Bismol or Nyquil. South Cache "To live only for some future goal is shallow. 7. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=55936 So how did this get approved? Shouldn't a cache container be a little more durable than a zip lock bag? I am all for rules, one of my virtuals was disproved because it broke a rule. That is fine it doesn't meet the spelled out criteria. It will once I gather more information. The cache above could have been handled differently. If you wish to leave a bug for transportation leave a note with coordinates or contact a local, we'll help out. 9. of New Orleans visit the Bon Ton Cafe. Very much near Mothers. While Mothers has great food the Bon Ton is closer to true New Orleans cusine. Make sure to order the turtle soup appetizer with a little sherry added. It is awesome!! Oh' yeah and Bon Ton won't break your wallet. Even Emeril's has great food, but since he has become a TV personality his prices first doubled then tripled. I only eat there on someone else's nickel. Have fun and keep us posted! 11. I wish I could have spent the night, I'll have to invest in a sound proof tent. It was really great meeting everyone. I took a cue from Phil and I have changed my "handle" to reflect my geocaching hobby. Capn_Skully fits my sailing activities but here I'll be known as South_Cache. Since I travel all over the south for work I think it will be appropriate. Thanks again for welcoming me as friend, the good times and great caching! 12. quote:Originally posted by mtn-man: I guess the one thing that makes me feel good is that there are tens of thousands of happy Geocachers out there that just enjoy playing the game and enjoy playing within the guidelines. You are so correct. A few of us braver and more boisterous geocachers get into these forums and post our opinions and greivances. We also have sock puppets, trolls, and outright fishermen. I have been known to troll a bit myself. It is fun catching the big fish. How many geocachers out there never type a word here? How many are just lurkers laughing at every cheap shot? I would guess only 10 or 15 percent of all cachers actually read and post in these forums. Just like radio call in shows of the whole audience maybe 10% call and only 1% actually get to say anything. 15. I use file folders in a canvas briefcase. Each folder represents an area usually by city or town. For big cities like New Orleans I have folders for uptown, downtown, lake front, river front, Audubon(sp) Park, City Park, New Orleans east, and West bank etc. When I go caching or benchmark hunting I take out the folder for the area I wish to hunt. My bag is pretty full, I better get out and find some caches. Capn Skully "To live only for some future goal is shallow. It's the sides of the mountain that sustain life, not the tops." Robert M. 18. You may wish to consider a small hard dinghy like they sell at West Marine. You can sail it or use a very small outboard. They sell for around $800 and they are unsinkable. Another thought is to visit marina's with an eye out for a used inflatable like a Zodiac, Achilles or West Marine. If you are handy with tools you can build one very cheaply with kits from Glenn-L marine. Glenn L Marine I don't own stock or have any interest in the companies mentioned except that they make nice products. Capn Skully "To live only for some future goal is shallow.
