eXplorist XL Update (North America)
JoeHealey replied to Photom's topic in GPS technology and devices
I just downloaded the EU updated ver. and followed the instruction and it's been working flawlessly ever since. It also appears to receive better in that before I never received waas sats and now i do also the accuracy is better , was averaging 15 to 20 now down to 8 to 15. Plus the 4 extra nav screens. I just was on vacation in SC and loaded all the caches in the area i was going to and it worked perfectly there also. Just loaded in a separate region for the area i was in via the topo and worked perfectly there. In between the things I had to do while there I cached some and was able to get 19 in a week in an area I never been before. -

No you are ok i have the 4 extra screens, they appeared after i downloaded the EU ver 1.55. it appears that the new US ver is not for me as i like the 4 extra screens. Was on vacation last week and the cool thing was on the flight to SC i ran the xl. Read the alt and speed and tracked perfectly, kinda neat 565 mph at 34000 ft! Anyway I was going to upgrade to the new US ver but seeing the issues you others are having I will pass on that. -

I was just reading the instructions for the new ver update and it appears to state that the update must be uploaded to the sd card. Is this true? I don't see why this should be done to the sd card and not to the internal memory, or is there not enuf room on the internal memory for the new ver. update. if that is the case then this update stinks. Or is that an error. I strictly use the sd card for holding my cache information and do not what or see why the new version of firmware needs to be uploaded to the sd card -

I had recently downloaded the EU version and it included 4 new nav screens, does the NA new version have the new nav screens also. Just curious if not I won't bother with the new NA ver. right now. The EU ver also includes a found cache feature also, does the NA ver have this too Thanks, Joe -
NOPE ALL WORKING FINE

http://www.magellangps.com/support/ go here and to the right of the page click explorist series and choose the xl European and you will be taken to the page to download the new ver. and it has the instructions for it there also. some one also said it is better to clear memory first, but i did not and have no problems as of yet your experience may vary so do what you wish. the screens are not better just 4 more to choose from if you wish to use them.

I looked at mine and only mag and true north are given so it appears to be no at this time to your question. however when i do a goto it places a mark on the compass screen that shows the direction of the cache. it also shows this on the other nav screens (I have upgraded to the eu ver 1.55 and have 4 more nav screens than stock na does) As far as the geocaching program that comes with it I think it's terrible and use gsk instead. give that a shot you will find it is much better. sorry not much help to you Joe

Inventory Time> What GPS Units Do You Own ?
JoeHealey replied to GOT GPS?'s topic in GPS technology and devices
Magellan explorist xl for caching and in the car my laptop with a gps antenna and delorme 7 mapping, i feel is the best way to go. no problem seeing the map does routing and everything else and can be set up with voice commands so is virtually hands off operating -
i have the xl and it works real good. can get sat link indoors also, could not get that with the map76. also upgraded the software to the eu version 1.55 and get 4 more nav screens and even better sat reception. screen is very easy to see. i have 150 cache locations loaded in mine right now in 1 file not using the sd card. also have se mass. region loaded in with topo still plenty of room left. very easy to operate although the file structure is a bit much when doing things but has a logical sequence so once you get used to it it's no problem, just the same as windows file structure. so far it is working very well for me and the price at beach camera $289 shipped in 2 days to my door can't be beat.

New firmware for Magellan explorist arrived
JoeHealey replied to DocW's topic in GPS technology and devices
Embra you are probably correct as far as rendering a gps incapable of reloading old software so maybe it shouldn't be tried. anyway got out for some caching today and the xl worked perfectly if not better. faster sat acquisition and higher accuracy also tracked more sats then before. extra nav screens neat but not much use. either way no problems as of yet. if it happens i will post. thought i would try the eu update v 1.55 in my xl. did not clear memory and went very easy and lost nothing in memory. has 4 new nav screens now and appears to receive sats better. had never picked up a waas sat , and now it does. have not done any caching yet to fully test but in the car going to work tonight it was working fine from what i could see. clicked one of my found caches as found and it disappeared and i still have not figured out where it went. don't like that much. anyway i would recommend trying it out. not sure if it will work for 3 4 or 5 hundred series but if it didn't work then you could probably reinstall the old version again. just thought i would mention the eu ver xl worked in my na xl as did the others posted here. -
Explorist 500 uploading trouble
JoeHealey replied to msubobcats's topic in GPS technology and devices
not sure if the 500 and 600 are the same as the xl but the computer will see the my xl gps as a removable hard drive and you transfer files that way. saved to a location on the computer and drag and drop or save directly to the gps I have the Explorist 600 and cannot get the PC to recognize my GPSr either, and the cord is connected properly. In fact, there is no way to correctly connect it upside-down. (There's a flat spot on the cord side of the connector. I have to save my data to my SD card, then transfer things to the internal memory from that. It's an extra step but still alot easier than manually entering data. -
explorist 500LE not detected by my pc
JoeHealey replied to martin alarie's topic in GPS technology and devices
Like Astro4x4 says, I have the XL which I believe is the same as far as computer hookup. The computer will see the unit as another removable hardrive. You pick the files you want and drag and drop to the gps unit. Also the post about the serial number is correct. There are (at least on my xl) an extra 0 at the start and end of the serial number that should not be used in the map registration. Hope u figure it out. Joe
