  1. Never mind, my bmps weren't 24 bit. I thought I had saved them that way, but obviously hadn't. I really do try to follow directions. :/
  2. My laptop crashed, so I'm recreating my custom waypoint symbols. I'm having no trouble getting them to show in Basecamp or Mapsource, but they are not showing up in the unit itself. I used the directions here: https://garminmontanagpsr.wikispaces.com/Custom+Waypoint+Symbols#x-Waypoint%20Symbol%20Names As far as I can tell, I have all the settings/sizes right, and copied them to the right location on the GPS (not the micro-SD card). Has anyone else had any problems or suggestions of what I can do? Thanks!
  3. I have the Montana 610 and love it. I also still have an Oregon ??? (I forget which) that I just don't like at all. It's too small and the screen is really hard to read - it's an older one. I have a GizzMO vest case for the Montana and it has an awesome belt clip plus long safety tether. I usually am on shorter hikes so strap it to my jeans pocket and tether to a belt loop. Even using hiking poles, it doesn't interfere with my arm movement. I've has it freeze 1 time - said it was loading gpx files.
  4. Thank you all for the information. I was able to get a class 10 32 GB Sandisk pretty cheaply, so went ahead and got it. I will certainly look at the tricks for loading the maps faster from my laptop and the card reader. Thanks again!
  5. 64GB seems to be it. What are you planning? Here are a couple of links that may help: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?24147-Montana-600-Micro-SD-Card https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?86225-Maximum-microSD-card-size-is Whatever size, it must be formatted in FAT32. 64GB can't be formatted in FAT32, but there are more ideas suggested. And if you're intending to load up the whole thing with birds-eye views or whatever, note the post that says a 32GB card full of stuff takes two minutes to boot up. I just want a card that can hold a good amount of topo maps and City Navigator. I have both the Garmin 1:100k topo and some of the 1:24k state topo maps from GPSFileDepot. I have a few track-based maps that I've made from trail data, as well. Thank you for the links. I tried searching and got back 1000 posts.
  6. Can anyone tell me maximum size (and class) microSD card that the Garmin Montana 610 can handle?
  7. Another vote for TT's maps. My husband is from England and when we go back to visit, we use them while sightseeing. He's seen more of his country since he left! LOL
  8. Update for anyone else that encounters this: The issue turned out to be the FID was too high. I discovered there was an updated version of the mapset available (with a lower FID). I uninstalled the original, installed the updated version, and all was good.
  9. I have an Oregon 550 that I've been using with Mapsource, not Basecamp. However, to update to the latest unit software, I get the warning that if I want to ever use Basecamp in the future, I have to perform several steps, including open Basecamp and transfer tracks, waypoints, etc. I've downloaded and installed Basecamp 3.2.2, but when I try to open it, I get a message that one of the custom maps (Montana Topo) is not installed correctly. I vaguely remember there being an issue with family id, or product id, or something similar, but I have searched the forums here and can't find any of the topics on it. (Probably used the wrong key words or something.) If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  10. Thank you both for the feedback! I'll download the latest, rename 6.13.7 executable, and be set to go!
  11. I haven't been keeping up with Mapsource updates - I'm still using 6.13.7 due to several problems and issues that were reported in the next few updates. One that I remember was that the horizontal and vertical scale factors seemed to be different. I remember seeing a screen shot of a circular track that displayed correctly in 6.13.7, but displayed as an oval in later versions. Has this been corrected since? Also, I had heard some of the later versions didn't work well with Windows 7. How about 6.16.3? In general, is the current version (6.16.3) worth upgrading to (with few bugs/issues), or am I better off staying with 6.13.7? Thanks for your help! Lalita
  12. Just wanted to say thanks! I'm taking vacation in England, Scotland, and Wales in a few weeks and these will prove very helpful, I'm sure. Great work and thanks again. Lalita
  13. Perhaps the OP was referring to National Geographic TOPO! maps. They do require a product key. Lalita
  14. Try this website, it might be able to do what you want. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ Check the "Convert a File" and "GPSBabel" links at the top of the page.
  15. Yes. The icon name, as usual, needs to match the name of the POI file in the subfolder. --Larry It worked, it worked, it worked!!! Thank you all for your help. I was indeed making it harder than it needed to be.
  16. I want custom icons for each type of POI, such as speed camera, castle, accident blackspots, etc. If I put all the points in one file, they all have the same icon. Therefore, I ran POI loader several times, writing to a folder on my hard drive. After each run, I renamed the resultant poi.gpi file to it's appropriate type, ie speedcamera.gpi, castle.gpi, etc. Then, I copied all the resultant gpi files to the microSD card in my unit (with the gpsr in "mass storage" mode). When I then turn the gpsr on, go to find, hit menu then change database, it lists some of the databases multiple times, while not listing some of the others. If I put the gpsr back into mass storage mode, it shows each database once, including the ones that don't display in the gpsr. If I have subfolders, can each subcategory have a custom icon? Lalita
  17. Software v 4.00 GPS Firmware v3.00 POILoader v2.5.4 Windows XP Media Center edition Using microSD card I have created several custom poi files using the instructions in the thread on this BB, Silly Garmin POI tricks (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=140808). When I load them on my card, something weird happens. If I put 20 files on the card, most (around 17) load correctly. Then, seemingly at random, one of the databases loads into the gpsr multiple times, and some of the databases don't load at all. The total number of databases matches the number of files on the card. If I delete the gpi file that is repeated, then it selects another database seemingly at random until there are 19 databases loaded, matching the new number of files on the card. What the heck am I doing wrong? TIA for any help someone can give me! Lalita PS I can't check this thread during the day, so if additional information is needed, I'll reply tonight.
  18. I recently discovered this FREE map including both contour and routable road data. I've installed it on my 60Csx and in Mapsource. According to the chart, it also works with the Oregon series. http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps No affiliation, just a very happy user. Lalita
  19. Thank you both for your help! I've been having trouble with the wiki not loading for me tonight, hence my post. Lalita
  20. I tried looking in the Oregon FAQ, but it wouldn't load for me. I got an early Christmas present today, and Oregon 550. I've figured out a lot of stuff on it already, including making a small custom map with Google Earth and downloading it to the Oregon. What I can't figure out is, if I plug the Oregon into the computer, it automatically switches to Mass Storage Mode. Is there any way to power it from the USB without it switching to Mass Storage Mode? (I don't mean charge the batteries or anything like that, just power it.) TIA! Lalita
  21. Quick question - do I need to uninstall a prior version to switch to the 1.50 version? Or can I just run the exe file without uninstalling? Thanks for EVERYTHING - your utilities are fantastic! Lalita
  22. No, just fake topography apparently. (Although nothing like the larger mountain ranges, southern MO actually isn't flat at all. It's the northern half of the state that makes good farmland.) Lalita
  23. Sure, in what format would you like to receive it? Lalita
  24. Any plans of doing a Missouri topo map? If so, I have quite a bit of trail data I can share for inclusion. Thanks!
