  1. Ordered Friday - received Monday - Wow! Thanks! Should work fine. Heading up to Devils Lake this afternoon. It will be put to good use scrambling among the rocks. Thanks for the quick service.
  2. The Explorist 100 has an eyelet for a wrist strap I think up at the top of the unit. A small nylon cable tie and a carabiner did the trick perfectly.
  3. My wife loves her 100. Of course she has time to input coords as we(I) drive from cache to cache so that's not a prob. As a backup it's perfect and performs VERY WELL. I would have a tough time though without a PC interface on my primary GPS, a Magellan Meridian. A PC interface is very important if you will be caching alot.
  4. Probably too late but the oldest Illinois cache(and one of the oldest still in existence) is Beverly, I think it's GC28. There are several other caches nearby too although its probably at least a mile walk from currently available parking on Penny RD to the NE of the cache. If on the tollway/interstate from Ohare towards Rockford you'd exit north on rt 59 about a mile to Penny Road and take a left and go about a half mile to parking on the left. Some bushwhacking would most likely be necessary without knowing the area. From there you'd have about another 45 min to Rockford - perhaps more depending on time of day - it can get bad late afternoon. maleki Marty
  5. That why one would be prompted to read the logs for further info and make a decision from there. It would be a valued assistant for me. If a lot of people are going to ignore a particular cache, there's probably a good reason that will be mentioned in the logs. I went to a new cache today that the first three loggers have walked away from. Granted, this one is new, but a few weeks down the road if future cachers notices ignores piling up they might be prompted to check the logs before wasting gas $$$ getting there. And maybe, just maybe, a bunch of ignores might prompt a cache hider to investigate why on their own. It would be constructive feedback no matter which of the many reasons a cache might be ignored, many of them valid and in no way an indicator that a cache is 'bad'.
  6. Cache owners, and seekers for that matter, should be made aware of how many are ignoring just like they are already aware of how many watching. Would love to see the ignore number right there on the cache page along with the watching number. It might help filter out caches I might rather avoid or for sure at least read past logs to see why people have a prob with the cache.
  7. Quite disgusting if true. I'll certainly look to see whose behind things when donataing time ot dollars. I certainly agree with the general ideas but this is quite overboard.
  8. Hmmmm, caches along a route, oh wait, that's another thread. US Route 20 - the longest road in the US at approx 3300 miles would be a great second road to feature. Newport Oregon to Boston, Mass.
  9. Always wanted to do a loop like that myself. Perhaps in conjunction with a Sox game in Toronto. In addition I'd want to stop at the R&R HOF in Cleveland and Cedar Point in/near Sandusky, OH. They seem to have some of the best roller coasters in existence. For something completly different, take the local route and cache along the way. Pick up US Route 20 anywhere in the Chicago area and see how long you can handle it going east. End of the line eastbound is Boston but it does pass thru Buffalo near Niagara Falls. Route 20 is the longest road in the US at 3365 miles. probably about a third of that east of the Chicago area. As we have done the complete western stretch of Route 20(in two different trips) , from the Pacific Ocean at Newport Oregon back thru the Chicago area, we hope to someday complete the route to Boston. Two summers ago we cached along 20 from the Chicago area to Boise, ID. There actually is a somewhat wacky website devoted to Rt. 20 www.usroute20.com that lists some points of interest along the way. Have a good trip!
  10. Thanks Stunod. Seems it's sponsored/hosted by AAA-Calif. I guess I am out of their area, Even though all the caches so far are closer to Chicago than CA.
  11. When I updated my closest cache page this AM I saw and ad on the GC page for some Route 66 caches sponsered by AAA. When I clicked on the ad I received a page that said 'Service not available in my area' and was redirected to the AAA homepage. Whats up?
  12. I was almost stuck on this until I realised that I had Cachemate on my PDA and it will do projections. Cool, never realized that. It will be very handy at times.
  13. It would be quite helpful to most cachers to be made aware of local policies. Not all use the forums, not all are active in local groups, etc. Some a true newbies and not even aware these options exist as I have often found. My experiences seem to be that most caches are hidden with no ones permission anyway. Perhaps your experiences are different. I'm sure permissions are not obtained for the seemingly thousands of lampost micros in shopping center parking lots but thats fodder for another thread. If a cacher from lets just say Illinois, submitted a new cache, why not just 'drag' him/her thru a link that has ALL the known policies in Illinois that GC has been officially made aware of. A simple click of the mouse to acknowledge that they have read and are aware of these policies and their newly placed cache violates none of them would also protect GC.com from grief if the cacher was trying to bypass the policies. When a new geocaching policy was recently started in a nearby county almost none of the cachers there were aware of it. I happened to notice Hydees post in the forums and went out to find affected caches that I had not found and noted the policy in my logs. Many of the cachers that had caches placed in the county FP's had their caches confiscated before they became aware of it. Some became awre of it only because I mentioned it in my log. Another newbie cacher placed a cache inside a new state park area unaware of the parks policy. As a new area it slipped thru the approval process. If the cacher had been made aware of the policy the mistake might not have occured. The process of 'schooling' us does not seem that drastic. I still don't get the 'policy' of keeping the policies private. Just me...
  14. I know the GSAK thread is always quite huge but GSAK questions posted there always get response - usually from Clyde the GSAK developer himself. I did not see an easy way to do it myself but I'd try over there if I really wanted an answer.
  15. I'm happy the thread was started as I now am aware of geocachingpolicy.info. I emailed some updated info regarding newer regional policies in my area just now. Seems like a great idea to me if the policy info is not posted on GC.com. Even if it is why not work together. The previous thread about this just seemed to degenerate into silliness. I occasionally come across new caches that are placed where they probably should not have been approved. I usually inform the cache owner and leave it to them of they want to archive or move it. Usually I hear back that the cache placer was not aware of the policy. If info is available why not use it. Why should the info be so coveted that it can't be made available and shared?
  16. So that was your average episode? I wonder how poorly written the rest of the series is. Like others have said, I didn't think it was very well written or had even a remotely believable plot, and the tie-in to caching was very weak. I think it may be a while before I watch TV again... now I remember why I leave the TV off and spend my time outside. L & O used to(and maybe still does) bill itself as 'torn from the headlines'. As a person that has watched the several different incarnations of the show it has always been quite surprising to notice how many show actually are almost direct accounts of very current news stories. Sure, the names are changed and I'm sure the story tweaked a bit but many of the stories have been easily recognizable. I wonder if the geocaching plot line was actually part of a similiar crime somewhere or a writers enhancement. Sorry if this info has been posted earlier as I have not read the whole lengthy thread.

    Pq - Not Running

Just generated a new run once query that came thru fine. I guess we'll never know what the prob was. Ameritech suppory said Port 25 was being blocked but that should have had nothing to do with my prob. As is typical though, moments after being told they saw no problem at their end, my PQ gets thru the system. Go figure...

    Pq - Not Running

I sent it through the Forums' own internal messaging system. At the very top of the page are some text links that read "My Controls", "x New Messages", etc... Yours should read "1 new message" and if you click on it, it'll take you to your PM inbox. Thanks - never new about that - duh. After I read your post I scrolled up and it says 0 New Messages, yet when I open the link, the message is there. I'll forward it to Ameritech tomorrow as the support guy with my case number said he was heading home for the day.

    Pq - Not Running

Upon further review... I told Ameritech that I was not receiving mail from Groundspeak but as the support person was checking I realized that I was receiving 'Topic Subscription Reply Notifications' and 'Watchlist Logs'. It seems that just email with attachments from Groundspeak, like a PQ are not getting thru. I attached an old PQ to an email I sent from a different ISP and it also got thru so once again, it is just email with attachments from Groundspeak.

    Pq - Not Running

I sent them earlier via the forums' private messaging system. If you didn't get them, let me know. Elias I've receieved no PM yet either. I had someone else send email to my account and it came right thru. Apparently email from Groundspeak is being blocked for some reason by Ameritech.net. I'm on the phone with them now and receiving no help and just requested some advanced support. Sounds like I'm speaking to someone overseas that is very new. I'm gettting rather annoyed with them at this point. She wanted me to use IE and there webmail which I have not used recently and refused to start using to troubleshoot. Been holding for advanced support now for at least 10 minutes.

    Pq - Not Running

0900 Monday AM and I still have not received any weekend PQ's. I have 9 PQ's that show as run at GC.com but have received none of them. What ISP seems to have the problem? My GC mail come thru Ameritech now. Thanks

    Pq - Not Running

My Saturday and Sunday PQ's also show as having completed at GC.com but as of 2230 CST Sunday evening I have received none of them in email. Not a prob at this point - just reporting info for admins. I rerun tomorrow and Tues when things less busy if they don't show overnite.
  23. My Magellan Meridian always overshoots by 100 feet or so. My wife goes right to the cache with her Explorist 100. I just drive now - she finds the caches...
  24. Thanks for checking. It was a feature that might occasionally come in handy though.
