  1. Recently, the "Our Lady of the River" cache went missing. It was apparently found by a park ranger and removed to the park headquarters. After the officials talked it over they returned it with this note in the log.. http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/50919_200.jpg Nice folks... 2. That airplane really was a piece of crap, the door should have given that away. It'd never make it out of Texas, where it still is as far as I know * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Vince Malum Patientia"
  3. After reading their "We're going home" EMAIL, I found it intreresting that they state that their campaign was not intended for profit. They appear to be giving away all of that hardware selflessly I guess. NOT! If they are bent on promoting the sport they could (for example) turn in all that expensive hardware and buy starter model GPS units and give them to schools to instruct at risk kids in the sport. Maybe it was not initally for profit, but it was a prime example of Shameless Self Promotion Their EMAIL reads a bit like a threat, nice * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Vince Malum Patientia" [This message was edited by montythemule on February 04, 2003 at 04:23 PM.]
  4. In the 60's and 70's KFWB was a San Francisco based radio station. When the market got tight in the Bay Area they ran off to Southern California. Hardly anyone remembers the "KFWB Good Guys" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Vince Malum Patientia"

  6. After watching the how successful the LAX TB cache (Grand Central Station) is, I am creating one at San Jose Mineta Airport. It will be OFF of the airport but accessable by the Airport Parking shuttle so folks on a layover can get there without a long walk ot taxi or car. A VTA city bus will getcha there too. 7. For a moment, lets change the belief system expounded upon here to the Islamic belief. How many folks who swoon at the thought of finding a Christian blessing or other icon in a cache, would equally swoon at finding Islamic materials in a cache? If these are equally welcomed, then thats the correct spirit. In anycase, it seems that Spiritual theme caches could be labeled as such so people can go to, or avoid them. Keeping it simple and free from opinion is probably the best idea. As someone stated earlier, as a signature item, its probably ok. How about Satanist beliefs? Its all so confusing...Glad I am a Theodolite! "Vince Malum Patientia"
  8. I have 2.01 and would like to know additionally if there are any significant new features woth the new firmware for the 76s. Cheers Monty "Vince Malum Patientia"
  9. Oh my, George, did you do all of those on your bike? Whoa! Monty "Vince Malum Patientia"
  10. That is an amazing feat in a year. Think of the places you would never have known about without the "guidance" of some others. Even though I was raised on the mean streets of Sunnyvale, I have discovered new parks and such within a few miles of my house. As I get into this more I am now feeling like I could place a few caches in formerly "secret" places. I like the change in the feeling when we get within 200ft of a cache, the hike just got serious when we got that close. I look forward to the innovation of 'ol pros like you and newbies that are yet to buy their first receiver. Long distance caches are fun, I did a few in So. Cal on business and look forward to ones in Singapore when I go there next month. Geocaching makes it tolerable to travel on business now. Travelling the world is less interesting from the inside of a cleanroom. Again, Congrats, you da MAN Monty "Vince Malum Patientia"
  11. Its easy to avoid. It is a vine and is easy to identify. There are other vines here that look a bit like it but aren't. Somethng to remember is that one can make contact with Poison Oak by petting a dog or cat that has the oil on its fur. I have gotten it so many time I dont get it anymore, but I recommend avoidance. Have Fun and welcome to California!! Cheers Montythemule "Vince Malum Patientia"
  12. I have seen a Labyrinth like the one above at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Others have been spotted in the UK of course and at the temple of...oh never mind. But, is that a clue? Monty Always remember: "Vince Malum Patientia"

  14. Hi from California, That lingo is just government speak for a map. It refers to a certain map scale, that scale is 7.5', or 7.5 minutes of latitude. USGS Topo maps are most commonly in 7.5 minute and 15 minute (2x the 7.5, kapeesh?) Anyway, some land managers in parks are starting to clamp down on this sport. Cleveland Metroparks has the right idea, talk to them in a knowledgable manner. Might not always work but it is the right way to start. We are having our own trouble in California, and I hear of trouble in Arizona on cache removal by Rangers and other Property managers. Good Luck! Montythemule Always remember: "Vince Malum Patientia"
  15. Cache removal by land managers is happening in Arizona and california too. What to do? Montythemule Always remember: "Vince Malum Patientia"
  16. Lots of hiding places there. Lungshan Temple maybe, a virtual at the artificial waterfall? Montythemule Vince Malum Patientia
  17. This has got me thinking, Vasona Park (Los Gatos) has an island and, and Angel Island. It is getting to be canoe season. How about an ammo box suspended below a bouy by a chain? Ugh, Ol' Muley
  18. We all have our battles to pick and to wage. Motivation is an odd thing. The time I save using the pocket queries is worth the money. The fact that this sport is also offered for free completes the circle, people have a choice. My idealism must serve me well. Of course, the non members bring a lot of the beautiful locations to this sport, so in that way they contribute significantly...it just takes them longer to obtain and enter the coordinates. 19. If there was ever a place for this it would be Taiwan. Next trip down I'll be putting some in Hsinchu City, High Tech Center of Asia! Maybe some Virtual Caches in Snake Alley? Montythemule
  20. I had the same issue. I had to get a SERIL to USB converter (with Drivers) to make the connection to my laptop. This was the advice from Garmin. The converter costs about US$30. My desktop still had the serial connector. Montythemule
  21. Caching in unkown areas is a large part of the fun! Play Away! Montythemule
  22. Taiwan has caches, I'm not going to take my canoe tho.... The island cache by boat is a fun Idea though. We'd do it Montythemule
  23. Ok, I couldn't wait....I heard this one in Helsinki, but it applies to Oregon Ahem, In Portland, it never rains two days in a row There is alway night inbetween. Monty
