  1. I know this is a stupid question. I've gone to my profile page but there doesn't seem to be anyplace to edit the email. I've done the "add" email address but it doesn't seem to "stick" and when I exit page and re-enter - there's no other email address except the primary one, which is now incorrect. What am I not seeing????
  2. I'd have removed the cigarettes also. After all, children visit these caches. I have removed crayons (because they melt in the summer heat). I think someone was using them as a regular trade item because I found three caches in the same area with crayons in them. When I remove something (like the crayon or a rock), I put something in its place. I always have lots of little trade items with me.

  4. That doesn't work. Also, "premium member" does not show on our name. Did you log out of geocaching.com? That would reset everything there-but this is separate. You have to log out of the forums. On the very top right of the page, under your name select "Sign Out" Then log back in. Okay. Did that and it's fixed. Thanks

  6. I have looked here on my profile and settings and cannot find where to add the photo. (We are a Premium Member). Now that you mention it, I see that this doesn't show on the posts either.
  7. Is there a number of posts that must be made in order for an avatar to show? Or is there a setting I'm not seeing for this?
  8. We are new to geocaching also. Right now we are only looking for easy (1 star and 1.5 star) low difficulty terrain. We have found more than we've missed, and have gone back to some later on and found them. It's getting easier to spot likely cache hides. We've been reading the hints, but now may stop doing that as finding these less difficult caches is not so difficult anymore. I've also been looking at the Google satellite map for terrain, which is helpful but sometimes spoils the fun. We are sooo "hooked" on this sport. Eventually I expect we'll "graduate" ourselves to more difficult caches. But we really want this to be fun, so the easier ones are best right now.
  9. Here's a list on the web by a long time charter member. But I'd consider many of the terms dated. Like when I started, YAPIDKA was common, and I haven't heard it in, I don't know, about 6 years. A lot of terms have been shown to be highly regional. Some examples that come to mind are "QEF" (Quick Easy Find) in British Columbia, and "Beacon" for an obvious cache location as you're approaching GZ, in Minneapolis/St. Paul. As often heard muttered by the two Geocaching Vloggers on YouTube who are from there. Of course you go 200 miles in any direction, and no one has any clue what they're talking about. Thanks for the link. SL means "Signed Log"
  10. My husband is retired army, who early in his training took a Ranger course. They wore caps that had reflective bars stitched to the back of their caps, which would glow at night. He tells me that when out in the woods at night, one could see these "eyes" bobbing around from the soldiers ahead of them. He enjoyed his Ranger training time and wanted to use the term, Ranger Eyes as our geocaching name. I designed a logo for us, which you see as our avatar. I also made a wooden signature token with this logo on it (the back side has a leaf "patch") and have just now started dropping in the caches we find.
  11. Didn't want to start a new thread, but will if no one knows - what does SL mean on a log? I've seen it along with other acronyms. Is there a thread on this forum that lists acronyms used on logs?
  12. We have enjoyed what little we've been able to do with the snowy winter. Can't wait for Spring to get out and find some more.
  13. You really need detail maps. I've been getting the Garmin City Navigator 2014 maps on the micro SD card.....lately I get them on Ebay for as little as $14 / free shipping. I've upgraded maps on 5 handhelds and now I'm getting some for my Nuvi's. They snap in your units card holder......start up the unit and they are there. I went over to ebay and found them - ordered one. Thanks I discovered something nice about the City Navigator (now installed). We went to a cache that was in a small nature sanctuary. The map showed the paths inside the park. Wasn't expecting that, but it's nice. Now, I don't know if it shows park paths elsewhere, but it might for some of them. We don't intend to go into the wilderness for which we'd need a topo map, so this may be all we need.

I went over to ebay and found them - ordered one. Thanks Free maps for Garmin here http://gpsfiledepot.com/ Thanks for the link. This could come in handy for trails and such - if I can figure out how to use it. I am not very techie. But am trying to learn. I have yet to download a cache from GC.com. Been procrastinating, but today's the day. I'll probably feel really silly after doing it and finding how easy it is.

  16. You're right, one really doesn't need a map for GC. We thought a lot about whether or not to have a maps ability on the GPS and decided that we'd like them for trips, in the car. Probably not so much for geocaching.
  17. We got our new eTrex 20 GPSr this week, and after playing around with it - with a little (okay, a lot) of help from the Geocaching for Dummies book, and the manual (not so much help), which I printed out, I ventured out with GPS in hand to see if I could do some basic things with it, like mark a waypoint and go to a geocache waypoint. I chose a geocache in a park nearby and was successful in having the GPS lead me to the area, and actually found the box - really thrilled. I have a few more things to learn on the GPS - like downloading caches from GC.com and maybe some free maps to use (Garmin only put a really, really basic map of the US on this unit and, while it works, there's no residential streets on it. Probably useless in non-urban locations.) Next trip out will be with hubby, who is letting me do the learning and he'll just have me show him how to do it. (A turnabout from what usually happens around here with techie things.)
  18. Thanks, sussamb Yes, it does seem very daunting. But I've been researching and reading on this forum and feel at least like I know a little something and am becoming familiar with the vocabulary. We'll be experimenting with the unit when we get it because we are fair-weather people and it's still very much winter here. By the time milder temps are here, we should be more than ready for our first cache hunt. Actually, there are two near our home that really don't need a GPS since they are each in a small area and the hints are all we need.
  19. Thank you. Your experience confirms our leaning toward the eTrex 20 so we can have maps. Forkeye - thanks for telling me about the "adventures" . We are retired and would like to take some short road trips, but, to be frank, I'm really tired of tourist destinations and shopping gift stores, and if I have to walk through another museum I'm going to scream. So with geocaching and adventure routs, I can see some good times ahead with some purposeful trips. PS: we did decide on having map capability and have ordered the eTrex 20 from Cabellas. We'll pick it up at the store next week - so we can take it out of the box and "feel" it before committing.
  20. That's helpful, and interesting about "adventures". I could see this being a fun thing to do apart from geocaching. It appears there's a whole world of techy activities that I was unaware of.
  21. Thanks for your replies and helping me figure this out. ANOTHER QUESTION: In the specs for these units is an indication of the number of "routes" and "waypoints" I understand what a waypoint is, but could someone clarify what routes are, and why this might be something separate from the a waypoint. I'm thinking that this is a series of waypoints - is this correct? And how is this used when geocaching? Bear in mind that I've never held a GPSr in my hand nor seen one in action. It's unfortunate that one has to make decisions in ignorance - but thanks to this forum, some of the fog has cleared.
  22. Just curious - why would one want several hundred/thousand caches in the GPS?
