  1. It should be there, I drove in a NGS witness post in 2001. There was and probably still is a locked gate across the road from the west. I recall back then they had problems with people dumping here so hence the gate was put in.
  2. Anything the DOT had would be in the state archives in Lansing and buried in field notes, if its even there. I got a MCM map of other control... https://www.dropbox.com/s/y7arc2vpfvuxf59/MCM map.pdf?dl=0 Don't know Buda, heard of him but when I was working, I recall he was the computer survey guru at MTU? He was doing the assessor plats for a local surveyor on Quincy Hill and there was a conflict with the US-41 ROW. So our PLS had to go show him where they missed a jog in the ROW line. I was going to lay claim to the 1320 x 10 ft strip of land that lain between the ROW and the Plat Line. LOL We (DOT Surveys) helped ID with a GPS class by loaning him the use our GPS equipment and being facilitators, going with the students. I took several out to Tri Sta ARCADIA to show them the field procedures. 2 of the kids in the class had co-oped with us the prior summer.
  3. It was a teaching aide. They were constructed so students could set up on one point and site the tower at another point. Way back in the late 1970's when we were (MDOT) surveying for M26 relocation from the bridge we had in our possession a big old map of these stations. The party chief, JP Smallwood (deceased) lived in Houghton, an CE and LLS for the state DOT for over 40 yrs, also once taught at MCM back in the 50's, knew all about this tech triangulation system. I recall have the big map laying on the drafting table in our office trailer. Matter of fact back in the day the a Prof. at MTU (Prof. J Service) was in charge of Michigan Geodetic Survey work in the area. The Survey dept at MTU would have this info, not the archives. I have no idea who runs that dept now. All the ones I know have died or retired, Chuck Hein RLS from Calumet (deceased), ID retired back to Sri Lanka. http://www.mtu.edu/technology/undergraduate/surveying/faculty/ This one is off Sharon Ave near the Mineral Museum and the MTU CORS (MDOT) station. There was one by the water tank on Ingot st, up from scenic lookout on US41 1/2 way up Quincy Hill, another used to be up at the fair grounds. I say use to be because I have not been by them in years so they may be gone. There used to be one on the Hancock end of the bridge, on top of hill in front of house, up the sidewalk and to the lelf. Gone now but point may still be in, homeowners used it as fire pit. Had to access from thru yard of home. One of Houghton Canal road just past UPPCO on right. Back circa 1979 JPS showed us where all these were. The points may be still there even if the towers are gone. As I recall there were no descriptions for most of them, just the survey map. 4. I recall back in 1982 when USGS determined that Arvon was higher. There was a story in Houghton newspaper about it. USGS was all over da UP updating maps circa 1982. We ran into their leveling and mapping crews in Gwinn-Palmer area, Baraga, Munising and I heard they were mapping in the Seney Nat'l Wildlife Refuge as well. The chief of the party was originally from the Munising area and I know a person who was working on his crew (HS together) during that time, he later worked for us at the DOT. He did not want go to Florida with them, bugs were bad enough in Seney refuge he said. We had lunch (at Helen's Iron Skillet in Gwinn) with the party chief on one occasion. The mapping crew consisted of just 2 men, rodman on a dirt bike and instrumentman in 4x4 pu. Hired lots of local help. Leveling crew was 4.
  5. Ride was fun, lots showed up. Heavy rain days before cut the dust way down but lots of water on the trails and a few washouts. View is very limited due to the tree's. You can drive to top by car but road is rough in some areas due to wash outs etc. We followed snowmobile trail down old RR grade (never was used) to get there and a remote and rough 2-track trail down hill back. View would be better after leaves are gone. Note - People from all over the world have been there (guest book to sign) but I never been and only live 45 miles away. Can check that off my bucket list!
  6. Picked up a little working as a DOT survey tech for some 30 yrs. Examples of USGS field work...
  7. There is going to be an ORV ride to the top coming up Aug, 19th, 2017. Everyone WELCOME. ORV Ride to the Top of Michigan
  8. Fyi - This info is in this forum somewhere but for those who don't down know. USGS Marks stamped with the prefix "TT" designates "Transit Traverse". Also USGS marks with a 3 letter suffix, the letters are the Crew Chief initials. e.g. 99 MPR
  9. Note - USGS work went on over 100 yrs and they had a habit of reusing mark designations (TT28K) in later years. I know when I search the NGS database for Michigan I often find several USGS marks with identical names in different regions. That also makes is hard to determine the original location. And another thing, some USGS work was not up to current standards (lat, long and elevation are way off actual) and do not warrant any preservation.
  10. I don't think there is any easy way to find info on this if its not in the NGS database. Without a more accurate location (Lat and Long) of where is was set (not found) you would never know to search the reams of data sheets USGS has for the USA. The per-verbal needle in the hay stack. 11. Circa 2000 if I recall is the edition. Try this ► NGS Data Explorer Also, some BM's set by other agencies (USGS for instance) may never had been submitted for inclusion in the database.
  12. I now see 2016 marks as well......one of mine was for 10/16/16. Kind of funny, Pwr Sqd guy found it once but same guy could not find it again a few years later..LOL I spotted the old MWP driving down the old RR grade (now ORV trail) with my RZR at 40 mph RL0702 RL0702 HISTORY - Date Condition Report By RL0702 HISTORY - 1934 MONUMENTED CGS RL0702 HISTORY - 1943 MARK NOT FOUND CGS RL0702 HISTORY - 1978 GOOD USGS RL0702 HISTORY - 1985 GOOD NGS RL0702 HISTORY - 20010615 GOOD USPSQD RL0702 HISTORY - 20040809 MARK NOT FOUND USPSQD RL0702 HISTORY - 20161016 GOOD USGSNP
  13. RL1517 HISTORY - 1871 MONUMENTED USLS So brass frustoms were common back then? I was the first recovery since it was set in 1871 by USLS although a field copy of USGS area map field checked circa 1982 shows it drawn and written on the map at the location. So USGS found it back then when doing quad map update but they never submitted a recovery report.
  14. Years ago (20) we were doing a GPS project in that area and the atlas showed all 1st order marks and I wanted to use it for our project. But the GPS survey boss said it was too hard to get to and would take to long. Never did go look for it. We had a pc program from the NGS advisor that showed marks in Delorme street atlas. I have found one like your picture, another USLS mark and the description does not mention what it is other then a stone post so I did not know what a frustum was. Frustum, the portion of a cone or pyramid that remains after its upper part has been cut off by a plane parallel to its base, or that is intercepted between two such planes. RK0486' RK0486'THE AZIMUTH MARK IS VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND AT THE STATION BUT TREES RK0486'ON THE STATION HILL MAY REQUIRE TOPPING IN LATER YEARS. RK0486'THE STATION WAS ASSUMED TO HAVE BEEN RECOVERED WHEN THE O-PARTY RK0486'OCCUPIED THIS STATION. THE MARK WHICH WAS OCCUPIED WAS A NAIL RK0486'LEADED INTO A DRILL HOLE IN SOLID ROCK (ALTHO THE ORIGINAL RK0486'DESCRIPTION DESCRIBES THE MARK AS A BRASS RK0486'FRUSTUM LEADED INTO A DRILL HOLE IN SOLID ROCK). RK0486'WHEN COMPUTATIONS WERE FINISHED ON THE STATION IT WAS DETERMINED RK0486'THAT THE POINT OCCUPIED DIFFERED FROM THE OLD GEOGRAPHIC POSITION BY RK0486'42.32 METERS LONGITUDE AND 8.18 METERS LATITUDE. THE OLD STATION RK0486'BEING NORTH AND EAST OF THE POINT OCCUPIED. WHEN THIS WAS RK0486'DISCOVERED, A MAN WAS SENT BACK TO THE STATION TO DETERMINE IF THE RK0486'MARK FOUND WAS A BRASS FRUSTUM OR A NAIL AND TO SEARCH FOR A RK0486'SIMILAR MARK IN THE VICINITY OF THE LOCATION GIVEN ABOVE. IT WAS RK0486'DETERMINED THAT THE MARK OCCUPIED WAS NOT BRASS BUT WAS IRON OR STEEL RK0486'LEADED INTO THE DRILL HOLE. A SEARCH OF THE AREA INDICATED RK0486'DID NOT REVEAL ANOTHER MARK BUT A HOLE WHICH APPEARED TO BE A DRILL RK0486'HOLE WAS FOUND IN A BOULDER. WHETHER THIS BOULDER HAD BEEN RK0486'BEDROCK AND HAD BECOME SEPARATED COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. NO LEAD OR RK0486'BRASS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN USED IN THE MARK WAS FOUND. TIME DID NOT RK0486'PERMIT FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
  16. So does that mean we wait for notice that it is working (and how do we get notice?), and then re-submit anything that hasn't appeared, or will they find things already in queue to process? Wait and see I guess.

  19. I noticed that I have one that I reported as found last October and it never got updated yet 2 others reported at the same time did. This one that did not was a "NOT FOUND" in 2004 by USPSQD that was actually right where it was described. I even submitted it again in Dec and its till has not been updated as of this date. ?
