  1. An interesting idea which might even be pertinent were Geocaches hidden indoors. My Lowrance GPS will not get a satellite lock inside my home (metal roof and windows) but it does very well in the deep woods under a deciduous canopy. I've found a thousand caches with my H20C. Does that make it 'better' than a unit which has been used to find 500? Hmmm . . . metal windows! Must be dark in there, huh? Indoors really isn't pertinent, as much of the signal is reflected off all sorts of ferris pollution. intermodulating the signals, creating harmonics, and just plain wreaking havoc w/signals. Under the right circumstances it could show strong signal, but it's just pure reflected phantom. Not truly an indication of anything other than your antenna can pick up some sort of signal, and feed it to and confuse the bajeebers out of the processor. Norm
  2. "Money saved to be spent on . . . Time Capsule?" (In my best 'Church Lady"(SNL) impersonation) Norm
  3. Indubitably! I'm not sure if he's on hiatus, or retired either; he does monitor the : http://forum.delorme.com/ , especially the topics related to batteries. "He da Man!" Norm
  4. Any form of virtualization(Parallels, VM(Virtual Machine)), or the "dual-boot" Boot Camp will require the installation of some form of Windows, be it XP, Vista, or W7. The virtualization options allow both OSs(Windows & Mac) to operate simultaneously. The Boot Camp option is an one or the other not both proposition; with the exception that Parallels allows the use of an BootCamp partition(and the enclosed copy of Windows) so with both those apps.(Parallels & Boot Camp) one can run it however they want. VM may offer the same options as Parallels but I'm not that familiar w/it. There was an open source project that(as far as I know went private) allowed certain apps. to run w/no Windows OS at all, last I looked it was turning into a raisin, not a fine wine. Norm
  5. Depending on how long(if ever) since your last firmware upgrade, that may be your first step towards using the higher capacity cards. I don't remember if the first runs could handle the HCs or not, I came onboard w/the PN-40s. The latest firmware is a very positive upgrade in all respects. Norm
  6. The nicest I've seen was on the Magellan eXplorist XL, very readable, even w/the backlight off. It may not be the highest resolution, but very readable, and big(same size as the Palm LifeDrive). Alas, it was discontinued, used 4 AAs (can you say huge), and was EOL'd(end of lived) by Thales to roll out the Tritons(Harrumph!). "Oh-Bla-Dee, Oh-Bla-Dah, . . . Life goes on, Hey, . . . La - La - La-lala goes on!" Norm P. S. : I forgot to mention, on brightest setting, it could be used as a flashlight, I kid you not.
  7. I recall early discussions regarding the Colorado series that after deleting files one had to empty the trash before disconnecting the device, might that issue still be live? I don't know, didn't "go Garmin", and started paying less attention to 'G' topics. Pretty much just waitin' for someone to get the Mac "Done Right"! Norm
  8. Ooops! I was not focused, meant to use fast reply, Sorry. Norm
  9. My 40 zeroed out at 0.5' on a cache @ the East portal to the Narrows Bridge, in the Memorial Park. It truly was 6" from the cache, only time at that resolution, . . . but always w/in stated guesstimate. I'm happy, 10X better would be better, still happy though. I was just in the Alameda neighborhood this afternoon. Christmas pix for the RRRescue. Portland is a beautiful city, you're fortunate. Norm
  10. @ Summer Walks : May haps you're confused about the difference between World Basemaps, & World Based Maps, either way is inconsequential to me other than you've notched out to 4 while knowingly derailing the train! BAD JU JU! If you want to pontificate, right or wrong, at the top of your lungs, then start a topic w/the proper title and have at it. Let this topic follow a civil course. Thank-You Norm
  11. "download", yes, I agree semantics are important. Receiving an e-mail would be difficult w/out being able to "download" it from somewhere. ;^)
  12. There is no "Send to GPS" button, or capability to send geo-caches to a Magellan hand held directly from the Ground Speak website. You must download the 'PQ's and then move them to the handheld via Magellan's, or a third party softwares w/your computer. DeLorme, and Garmin are the only players in that arena("Send to") at this time. Norm
  13. And know how to use the map and compass. Stuff happens to the fancy handheld electronics... "Ungraceful shutdown", the result of dead batteries while using the wrong setting may have detrimental effects on your devices ROM, and data stored in RAM, . . . do so at your own risk, I won't. I'll second the orienteering thing, dehydration and hypothermia tend to hamper one's ability to learn; So, . . . "know before ya go" . . . how to use these old school tools, . . . or perish. Norm
  14. I emigrated from a Magellan eXplorist XL and didn't have much issue. My bi-focals use a lower magnification than that level which was recommended; subjectively 'speaking' "YMMV". Norm
  15. Shhhh! No whine before it's time! Some will like , some will just have half empty snarkies , let's let the cards play out. Norm
  16. I think trainlove was reinstated, just chooses to post on his own terms, I think this topic posting didn't meet his criteria for public discourse, . . . and that's perfectly OK. I've never taken issue w/his posting, and he did/does have strong positive contributions to those things Magellan(pre Triton). Take WAAS as an instance. Pre eXplorist owners would be "in the dark" so to speak, w/out his shared efforts. As to whether there were issues in other forums that may have revoked his reinstatement, . . . I know not. Norm
  17. No I think a reminder like this is a good thing, and calling attention to it every now and then brings most people back to center. It costs nothing to do so,burned up a few bytes, nothing more, and worth while I believe. I'm a firm believer(read : it's worked for me so far) in archetypes, I've found some posts(despite their flammability) invaluable in separating the "wheat from the chaff" regarding the posters ability to provide assistance to fellow GPS enthusiasts. Albeit my first posts to this forum were venting and expressing precognition regarding the short falls of an equipment manufacturer, "I'm feeling much better now", and mostly over it. Honestly, I've seen very few topics go too far into the abyss of uselessness, even factoring in the dilution accumulated from bickering; the moderators have been doing a fine job in my book, and there's only one(nameless) that IMO might be perhaps a little "quick on the draw". Overall the Mods are doing a commendable job, on par or better than some other forums I frequent(some "motor-head" forums can be brutal). That being said, I'm happy with the Status Quo. Debate is good, as are honor and respect. If posters remember that their comments live forever perhaps they'll exercise more personal restraint, I have confidence that we as a whole are capable of diligence and self-control, (we) just occasionally need to be grounded to dissipate the (emotional)charge. Which reminds me of something a couple of administrators(they mostly prefer the term manager) occasionally need reminding of : "Respect, and contempt have(at least) one commonality, they're both earned!" Norm As I wrote this, I was moderating the play of two very spirited hounds, one four and a half, the other 12 weeks, moderating ain't easy! Yup, I'm the fun police! Protecting the big'n from the lil'n 'till the "puppy license" expires, she does respect his fragility(until he ain't). Although seemingly off-topic, really deep down, this is an analogy! Time to take Deckard aka "tenacious 'D'" out for a constitutional.
  18. Respectfully, one can only determine the relative capacity of batteries on the discharge cycle. No two batteries no matter how perfectly matched will discharge at the exact same rate whether used in series or parallel! If one has less internal resistance than the other one in the pair (or more), then it will take the "lions share" of the work needed, and the other one will coast. Upon going through the next charge cycle the 'worker bee' will take more juice, while the 'slacker' will take less. Using multiple charge/discharge cycles to determine which batteries have similar characteristics, and pairing them up, will result in the work being more evenly distributed amongst all your batteries, thereby insuring longer happier lives for all. More predictable battery warnings from your device of choice(if equipped to give these) may also be a side benefit. As always : . . . YMMV Norm
  19. The search engine here won't accept terms less than 5 characters(better than nothing I guess). Add the rest of the letters to fill out the word "Macintosh" & you'll be pleasantly surprised. Maybe even try "Apple", don't get too "tuckered-out" though! Norm
  20. Yes! It may help, very few @ DeLorme Forum have continued using disposables for any length of time. In cold weather, . . . like Eastern Washington in winter, the Lithium disposables seem to hold up well, as well as the Lithium re-chargeables from DeLorme, and the infamous 'cab-bat', reference the DeLorme forum to read up on this last one. On a side note; check the links in Embra's sig.. Worth every ounce of effort from the enthusiasts compiling checking, and documenting this data, as well as a device specific audience of users wearing the "Been there, Done that" 'T'-shirts. Norm
  21. Hmmm . . . .?!?! Tried the low self discharge type like the 'Enloops', pretty much any of the "pre-charged" re-chargeables qualify as being this type. A smart charger is a good investment for any one using re-chargeable batteries on a regular basis, I use the Maha 9000, others buy the LaCrosse(sp?). Norm
  22. Edits for brevity . . . Previous Saturday to this last, my MacBook was fed a cup o' joe through the keyboard; the only thing worse than the "blue screen o' death" is the "black screen o' death" (saved my hard drive, data lives on in the embodiment of a new 13" MacBook Pro). It(old one) has to spend another week on top of the water heater before I put the hard drive and battery back in, then she gets it. She was fulfilling the role of "Sorcerers apprentice" to this amateur "Major Domo" long before the G4. She's surpassed the old man at techno rebuild, and loves doing it, where I was mostly begrudging. I have every confidence she'll "git 'er done" and running. Now pop will get to buy another copy of Parallels (or leopard for BootCamp) and Windows XP. Not a burden $ wise, . . . but . . . native support would be a much smoother option. Their PN-40 sure looks good stuck to the dash of the '"Serious Tool" Bobtail Bronco', color clash and all. Norm
