  1. It may be easier, but it's nowhere near as informative. You'd be surprised at how much you can absorb whilst searching for something else. The main thing is to soak in all the data you can before you form opinions, and allow for those you do form to change as the big picture begins to come into focus. Even your chosen usage could change as you discover there's more than trinkets and 'Tupperware'. Norm
  2. On the Lithium R-CRV 3 battery, did you let it charge for 18-24 hours before first use (you know, just like the lithium battery in your cell phone)? I know that DeLorme has built an installer(like it's a necessity (well, it is if you can't launch an .exe on a Mac)) for installing firmware, and an dashboard widget for CacheRegister, Oh, . . . and data delorme(such as it is). Were you writing of some other specific Mac wares published by DeLorme? Norm

  4. In "Native Mac" DeLorme PN-XX devices support 'Cache Register', and 'Send to GPS' via Groundspeak, there's also some capabilities w/.gpx files available through 'GPS Babel'. None of the present iterations of DeLorme's 'Topo' will load on a Mac sans BootCamp or some form of emulation. The three pre-cut DVDs that ship w/Topo can be used natively on the Mac. The PC's .exe application won't work, but the .pm0, and .ybr files for your areas of interest can be drag 'n' dropped to an SD card, or to the internal(EM) memory on device. I'm not certain that DeLorme has any further interest in Macintosh, it doesn't appear to be gaining enough momentum for them to expend large amounts of energy to "get it off the ground"! I think that the present state of the economy could have forced them to direct their resources in less speculative adventures. As to whether they've fulfilled their goals, is hard to say, as I've never been privy to just how far it (is)was planned to extend in compatibility, or lifespan. Time, and or Chip & Caleb will tell, . . . or not! DeLorme has been burned in the past by being "open" with their plans and people developing expectations that they felt weren't met. Can't say's I blame 'em for "playing closer to the vest". I think the "new" 2.7 'device firmware' offers some more ability to work w/.gpx sans 3rd party software, as well as adding value to their XMap software, I hope this trend continues. My hopes are that Mac development will continue, as I've seen evidence of effort contributed within DeLorme that might suggest that there just might be more to come, . . . "Hope springs eternal". . . . . There are others here that are presently more active(than I) in the Mac/DeLorme realm, expect them to add, counter, clarify, or further confuse. Norm
  5. I have purchased Parallel Desktop but have not installed it yet. How does it work and would you recommend it? Windows is a separate purchase over and above Parallels, it's not included. If you have an Intel Mac and BootCamp installed one option is to install Windows under BootCamp. Also, with a Parallels install you can target that copy of Windows, allowing "dual-boot", or emulation, depending on your whim. Another option is to install Parallels and then Windows within Parallels. I use the second option, so far DeLorme's Topo software works ok, for the most part. For me 3D was fine after going to Parallels 4, but tracks wouldn't move off device, others have seen the exact opposite. I've not moved up to Topo 8, or to Parallels 5 yet, but will when life priorities settle out. Norm
  6. It also rules out the Mac & Linux folks. Yeah! . . . What's up w/Clyde and Co.. One would think that Mac/Linux versions would at least be discussed, Robert has done a Mac version of GPS Babel, the cornerstone of GSAK. Seems odd that the growing Mac contingent is seemingly being ignored. They own shares in Parallels, or VM? Norm
  7. A link to where these packages are being offered, . . . if you please? If the Navionics package is more $, then I would suspect that the SD card comes in addition to Topo 8. I'm not aware that a PN device can be purchased new w/out the Topo software. Perhaps directly from DeLorme, but in the wild, through retail channels I think that Topo is included. Norm
  8. I'm not sure I understand this. How are rechargables more environmentally friendly? ...ken... They don't fill up the landfills(as fast). When you take a bag o' alkelines to recycling you don't really think they have a bunch o' little monkeys w/can openers takin' 'em apart for the stuff inside do ya? They send em to a toxic waste site and bury 'em w/all the cans of paint thinner and other jetsam that's icky. Some communities are different, if they're not braggin' about how green they are, then they're probably not very green. Me, . . . I move garbage trains, as well as import 'cans'. 9. DeLorme and Garmin have both worked w/GC.com to provide 'direct to device' cache downloading one at a time via "Send to GPS". DeLorme is, at this time, the only device manufacturer that provides 'en mass' downloading directly to device from GC.com(Cache Register). Pretty much all of the major players provide a means of indirectly loading caches to their devices via their proprietary software(s), and some(most?) can also load caches via 3rd parties offerings, GSAK, GPS Babel, or . . .? Some of the Garmin product can take cache data 'en mass' once the PQs have been downloaded to your computer and un-compressed, then "drag' n' drop" to a file location (on card, and or device?). Norm
  10. Maha has such a charger, avail. from Thomas. Maha chargers are at the very least 'on par' w/LaCrosse. http://www.thomasdistributing.com/shop/mah...199rcmu07fvaei7 Norm
  11. Correct. Put the "better" internals from the wrecked unit into your replacements housing. Which would work, but when the unit is fixed, I'll have 2 units. Besides, I don't think I would know how to do that, it appears it might be a bit out of my capabilities! Isn't one a 'base' 40, and the new replacement a 40SE? I wonder if while Dr. Frankenstein is at it, . . . swap the extra memory over. I doubt that the SE's additional memory is a plug-in though, probably part of a board structure, fragile and not easily added to the non-SE. That may be why the SEs are limited run(s). Norm

  13. I can't speak for anyone else, but, . . . If I were in 'D's marketing I'd be calling you up for a transcript and checking into getting it repaired for parts cost. Just a thought! Now there's one for "Creative thinkers"! Norm
  14. Do you have Topo 7, or 8 installed? If so, just drag the files(after unzipping them from the e-mail) onto the right hand map pane in Topo, then connect device in transfer mode and exchange them over. I'm sure that someone who uses that method more often than I will come in and fill in the voids. I was able to figure it out solo, and Windows isn't my chosen OS; It's so easy a Mac user can do it! Albeit via Parallels. Norm
  15. Huh?!? I think you may be referring to the text size, a browser setting. What OS, and or browser are you using? Norm
  16. Ok, there's my justification for buying Xmap. Thanks for the update! Am I reading correctly that the price is $250? XMap may not even be needed to use the upcoming feature, but it is a cool piece of software. Usually that have a discount for PN users, you just need to call them to if you want to order it. In my very brief perusal, I thought one needed Enterpri$e! That hill's a little too steep for this choo-choo! Or a consist of four, for that matter. It is really cool to see a two way dialog twixt the SD & EM, that opens the possibilities for future features immensely! Norm
  17. And there's a Mac Dashboard widget version too! If on Windows and it gobbles up all your processor cycles close it out in system tray and restart it. Not a widespread occurrence, but has been known to happen. Seems to behave after cycling on/off once. Norm
  18. Where's trainlove when ya really need him? Look for him over here : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/ Norm
  19. Please; I accept that people can address here in generality, and not every posting is directed towards a specific point, or individual. I, as do others, have opinions that I(we) feel need no defense, even though others think that they might . . . ! It's all kewl, we're among friends. I was more pointing out a tendency towards mono focus, in a forum section which has been deliberately titled towards a more general discussion. Waypoints as they are addressed by the PN devices and the discussion thereof is "dead on" topic and not a hint of drift, if anything, my speaking towards forum focus was flotsam, I apologize Roddy, I wasn't speaking directly to you. If anybody else feels my previous posting was specifically directed towards them as an individual "Oh Well . . ." , It ain't always all about you. Norm ~Fleetwood Mac~ (see quotes)
  20. I think Ground Speak has sewn up an unintentional 'tear in the fabric'. I think it happened when they tightened up the 'Send To GPS' for Garmins that allowed more than the intended data. Close to the timeframe of DeLormes' entry into the 'Send To' club. Norm
  21. Sorry if my observations upset the boat, but it is my true experiences and I am happy to share any and all true experiences when they are discussed. Some people likely DO use waypoint projection, just not EVERYONE...sorry! Personally, I could think of a few other features i would like to see sooner which I'm certain others would dismiss as not a priority, life is grand! And I repeat, not quite as important to me as it is to you! With the understanding that this IS a geocaching forum proper, this section is about the technical aspects of GPS. Now that that's out of the way, there's many here who don't use their device primarily for caching. Projection of waypoints is a very useful feature for those who wish to mark a waypoint easily at a point that may be obscured from direct passage, or to a point that may not have an discernible visual que(ie. laying a field of pulleys for a lure course), there are, I'm sure, many other instances where projection would be a benefit in the commercial usage of this "Serious Device". The PN-XX devices are marketed to varied recreational endeavors, and additionally for their commercial potential. Not to discount geocaching, . . . but, there is more to life w/a PN than cache alone.
