  1. Didn't I see "project waypoint" or something similar in a menu screenshot posted somewhere? These scenarios are what that feature should be intended for! @ least it was 'way back when' I used my eXplorist XL. Norm
  2. And, . . . a Garmin project to boot! I doubt that they'd be releasing any APIs to anybody 'til they've recouped some investment, which doesn't look like will be happenin' any time soon. Then, again maybe it's a Groundspeak project, in that case the roaring "Ho, Hum" isn't bringing too many suitors to the door. Norm
  3. And, . . . the 'TOUCH' is NOT a phone. If people are going to exercise their "pop-off valves" @ least have a clue of that to which you make your comments. We all know about quietness, and removing doubt. For purposes of edification : http://www.gpscradle.dualav.com/ Norm
  4. The GPS in that device isn't put there by Apple, the device is manufactured for DUAL! It has nothing to do w/the iPhone, it is made to be used w/the iPod Touch, giving the Touch GPS capabilities that it didn't come equipped w/. I'm afraid it is what it is; being designed primarily for auto navigation they apparently went cheap on the chip. Hopefully they'll get a clue for the second iteration if there is one. Norm
  5. Maybe not so much the bridges thing; more the expats running like they were being chased w/icepicks. I know, for one, they couldn't've "Shanghaied" me back on board. I heard, and couldn't resist the sirens once, It'd take some pretty sweet singin' to get me to steer that close to the rocks again. In fact, I may be too close now just peekin' through the fence. No need to tie me to the mast just yet, . . . Whew! Norm
  6. Uh, just function , app. seeing the GPS data. Maybe a few thoughts on how the pair function together, or on just the app. alone. I've not popped for the RouteBuddy data for my phone, just used the OSM stuff, I'm kinda underwhelmed so far, but it does seem to be improving in my location. My daughter has a genII Touch and asked if my BlueTooth 'puck' would work w/it and sadly I had to burst the bubble. But if this Dual device works w/the RB stuff it might be worth further investigation.! Neil @ Routebuddy is also interested, as are a few others on that forum. Another company's just taking too dadgum long. Although they were kinda nebulas as to the life extent of their "Mac initiative". It's hard to tell if it's dead or alive. Norm
  7. @ ras_oscar : Uhhh?!?!? You do know that decent batteries never perform at their peak potential until after several charge/discharge cycles don't you? I do hope you gave 'em a fighting chance! Norm
  8. Would you mind giving this app. a shot: http://www.routebuddy.com/atlas/index.html ? And report back, . . . maybe over here : http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/macmap/ Too Norm
  9. Yes, it is open to interpretation just exactly in what context they're using the term "valid"; POIs quit working? No longer free to acquire? Poof! It disappears, maps and all? It's hard to say; I suspect the app. & maps are free to keep, guess we'll see after a week won't we? Norm
  10. DeLorme has caching abilities via Mac, but it seems they have either plateaued, or stalled out on all the really good stuff that makes the PN-XX Topo-XX combination really unique. Maybe after the PN-60/Topo-9 roll-out they'll have resources to work it, we'll just have to wait and see just how bold they can be. Mapping data being what it is, it's easier to protect and feed just one "cash cow" , so why not pick the big one, cull the runt. Don't tell anyone that the runts growing though, it'll . . . Norm
  11. It adds GPS to a device that didn't come equipped w/such, works with other venders maps (as well as Dual's proprietary offering), and is marketed by Dual through the apple store. There's many 3rd party vendors that sell their wares via that venue. All sniping aside; I think it's an interesting product that has good market potential, geared towards those who aren't ready to do an 'hard' upgrade by replacing a device, but want the added functionality. I have an iPhone 3Gs with which that device won't work, my daughter has a 2nd gen. Touch with which it will, she's not willing to "pop" for an iPhone right now, so this device could scratch her niche. Norm
  12. Lowrance enduras? "the company that must not be named" top shelf Tritons? Norm
  13. I had some discourse pertaining, but alas the irony, the help it could have provided was not directed towards the OP, . . . so in the spirit of staying OT, I'm pre-retracting any statements about not availing oneself of, or giving positive advice. Norm
  14. Please share your source on this portion of your statement. Norm
  15. Oh YES they do! I've not seen much change on those two fronts. Good design isn't a bad thing to have as icing to boot. Norm
  16. Parallels offers the same feature; run BootCamp's Windows install as a VM in Parallels. Not that it functions any better than Fusion, . . . just an similar option's all. Norm
  17. OBTS "Once Bitten, . . . Twice Shy!" Norm The Shah is dead, long live the . . . ?
  18. Place it in an open unobstructed location(out of doors) and let it bask in the satellites' radiance for . . . oh, say, 25 -30 min. No need to rinse or repeat. Norm
  19. Beware. Some of the DeLorme "fans" here are on the payroll. They get freebies from DeLorme in exchange for their enthusiastic support. Let me say that I have no first hand knowledge of this and I based my comment on hearsay. That was just plain wrong. Though I do not moderate this forum, as a moderator in another forum I represent Groundspeak no matter what forum I post in. I have a level of responsibility that I did not live up to. I would like to emphasize that my comment was not based on any facts known to me. Irresponsible comments such as mine can tarnish the reputations of the fine participants of this forum and a great company like DeLorme and have no place here. I apologize to DeLorme, the forum users here and my friends at Groundspeak for my irresponsible spreading of unsubstantiated gossip and I hereby retract this ugly, baseless comment. Apology accepted, retraction acknowledged. Norm
  20. 15 seconds of boiling water, 10 seconds of light pressure, now I have to want to take mine (otterboxed) out of the clip. Needed to burnish(Dremel) the edges of the holster clips a tad to get it to seat easily. much more secure now, just need a little outward finger pressure on one clip while tipping the top away. This thing ain't fallin' out unless I go to ground, then the phone is the least of all worries. Norm
  21. I have dealt w/DeLorme's cust. serv.; I used the phone, new 'back plastics' were the prescribed cure. I elected to pop for the express shipping on my end, they did likewise on theirs'. End result: Shipped from Washington to Maine on Thursday, MY repaired DEVICE was in MY HANDS after I returned home from work on the immediate following Tuesday. Six days w/a weekend in the middle, . . . "Not too shabby!" if you ask me. I'd say this and my experience acquiring Topo8 upgrades has put DeLorme's customer service "#1w/a bullet" in my book. If your milage varies, I'd be surprised. Norm
  22. A MAP 330 still getting WAAS? As an eXplorist XL owner all I can say is . . . The Meridian and eXplorist owners were hobbled w/an hardware locked WAAS situation that was reluctantly remedied by an firmware release . . . AFTER they were EOLd. I'm suspicious of your 330s truthfulness, as the other devices said they had WAAS lock when in reality they couldn't possibly, . . . seeing as how the WAAS transmissions were switched to satellites they didn't know to look for. Just wonderin' . . . Norm
  23. I agree, and I am really thinking that I want one. However, with a perfectly good PN-40, it will be hard to justify the cost, regardless of what that is. Oh, sheesh, darn, just as I was typing I accidentally tipped the coffee over and it spilled on my -40 and now it is starting to spark and smoke. Last time I spilled coffee, . . . I was punished w/a new MacBook Pro, "Oh darn" , best o' luck trying to get the "Magic smoke" back in your PN, CP! Norm P. S. : The previous MacBook lives @ my daughters house after a short convalescence on the water heater.
  24. At this time the only other options that fit criteria #2 are DeLorme, & Garmin. DeLorme ticks the budget in #1 above just a little over w/maps included. Garmin can tick in lower, but maps are extra, either $, or time & effort to get the free ones that have varying amounts of features working. Trying to "Cop a Friday" here, . . . "Just the facts ma'am!" I'm counting on others to fill in the voids. Norm
