  1. Will meets become rarer if the organiser can't claim it as 'attended'?
  2. Once again, nothing is stopping anyone from continuing to find these things. The only difference is you wouldn't get your +1 anymore. The "special feature" you talk about is the problem. Anyone claiming it would spoil caching not to have it is being a bit disingenuous. Essentially all they are really saying is they are only searching them out for the numbers. I'm sure the numerous posters on here that have visited multiple YOSMs will be amused by the idea that they visited them 'for the numbers', whereas of course logging large numbers of trads, multis and letterboxes was for some higher purpose. You found that cache 453 times. I can see why you are upset about it. I suggest you go onto the YOSM site (http://www.yosm.org.uk/cacher_stats.php) and see just how far Tundra70 has had to travel to enable him to log it 453 times before you make such comments!
  3. If anyone doesn't understand why we want to keep GC45CC, try looking at the cache page - the photographs will give you a good idea what's so special about them. Getting 'multiple' smileys takes enormous effort; it's not remotely like logging a urban nano more than once!
  4. That's only 3% favorite points. Not that much really. 22000+ finds but 2917 unique finders (1038 have logged more than once). That gives ~21% favourite points. It's in the top 10 for favourites in the UK. Uh, no? Not even close. 21% favorite points means place #58 looking just at virtuals in the UK (which seem to get a fair amount of FP just for being virtuals, since they are rare nowadays). Looking at *all* UK caches, there are 47 that have 100% FP (of those that have at least 10 FP). As for what position 21% FP would be in the total list, I can't be bothered to page that far down the list. Position #1500 has 70% FP, as a random sanity check. Er - 650 FPs is 10th in the U.K. by number Duncan. One of my own has 64% FPs but as it's only been found 25 times I'm not sure that's a good measure!
  5. Of course those folks who can use one cache to obtain many smilies would like it...it bumps their numbers. I can assure you that GC45CC to bump up your numbers is a particularly ineffective way of doing so - I was on a YOSM trip which started before sunrise and finished after dark - we covered 300 miles in the car and walked many more and we only managed 22!!! If you want to bump up your numbers just do one of those unbelievably unimaginative power trails in the US where you can apparently get 1000 identical film containers in a day! Apparently it's even acceptable to replace each one with the one before it so you can sign them on the move!!! You have no idea what GC45CC is all about but you can be assured it's significantly more in keeping with Geocaching origins than you can possibly imagine!!
  6. This (if implemented) would be a disaster for me and many others who rather enjoy collecting the different locations. Indeed, the top 5 YOSM hunters (GC45CC) have found over 400 of them which involves travelling the length and breadth of Britain and in many cases yomping up significant hills! I've got 116 which represents over 7% of my total finds!!! 640 Favourite points from 2500 cachers shows how popular they are; I'm sure the Canadian version is equally well loved! Whilst I understand the idea of preventing multiple logging of a single cache, clearly these are all different, they just happen to be under a single cache code. It must surely be possible to exclude these two special ones!
  7. I think I deserved it! Wow it was cold up there!
  8. Thanks for that - I'll check it out on Tuesday when we plan to go up there. If the road is shut can we take thecog railway instead?
  9. Oh I do hope it isn't - I've got my stone all painted up for the nearby Mt Washington 9/11 Memorial (GC1D9A)!
  10. I haven't checked out whether the road to Mt. Washington is closed no - I hope not! (How do you copy a bit of a post and quote it?)
  11. So far I haven't failed to capture an image but then I've only got 10 in total anyway- there are only 14 in the whole of the UK. I do check that the cameras are working before I go there though! Today's, on Cape Cod was the first one I've needed a friend on a computer back home to take the image. He might be needed again when we reach Mount Washington in a few days time.
  12. I'm in the USA at the moment and am targeting webcams as there are only 14 in the whole of the UK. Whilst ALL webcams require images from the actual webcam to log as a smiley it seems that over here many cachers are just taking photographs proving they've been at the location. There's one near Lake Winnipesauke NH which is only seasonal but still folk are claiming the smiley though they can't even access the location let alone get the webcam image! I'm rather surprised really as following that logic they could go somewhere near ground zero on any cache and log it as found because they were there!!! Come on guys - if you can't get your image from the webcam you haven't 'found' the cache!!!
  13. No it's not - it can be either a multi or an individual 'bonus' mystery cache where you have to find the 6 trads first.
  14. Fair comments noncentric. I guess I'm just lazy and sometimes can't be bothered seeing whether I've qualified for some of them. My bad!
  15. That was me, and whilst I do hate those types I certainly didn't suggest getting rid of them as I know plenty of folks do enjoy them. I know two local cachers who are on streaks of around 700 days; I tried it once and got bored after 7!! As I alluded to in my initial post on this matter (before the survey came out) there are more challenges I'm NOT interested in than those I am but that doesn't change my view that challenges are an important part of the game which I for one would have been gutted had they been banned permanently. If you don't like a challenge don't do it - simples!
  16. I totally agree - I know plenty of people like them.
  17. I'm pleased the survey seems to address most issues - there's something there for everyone - I hate Streak and Numbers based challenges but love Grid filler types and other interesting ones. The implication of the poll is that they'll return and be better. I particularly like the idea of all challenges requiring a checker. Some of them are so hard to even work out if you've qualified!
  18. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=c557a0f0-fe2e-4d96-bb6b-639c8dcde454 Try these - there's 1000 on this one.
  19. I've been meaning to comment on this subject since Challenge Caches were banned, albeit temporarily I hope. From a personal viewpoint I love challenges! Not all of them no, and I agree that a lot of them are a bit silly such as find a cache on Valentine's Day. Not really much of a challenge but hey ho! There are over 1100 challenges in the UK at the moment and I've actually looked at all of them. Of that list there's about 370 that I currently qualify for, and 240 that I think I might qualify for one day. Nearly 600 of them though are in my "Challenge Caches I have No Interest In Whatsoever" Bookmark List. So in my case there are more challenges that I'm not interested in than those that I am BUT, and here's the rub, I really want to get the ones I am interested in. I'm not a numbers cacher, I like challenges be they caches or just personal targets like keeping my average D and T over 2 and getting my traditional's ratio lower and lower (currently just over 45%). Most of the ones I'm not interested in involve Daily Streaks, Large Numbers in a Day and Church Micro based challenges. Others are just very easy with low D/T ratings or a bit silly(imho). However I know that although they're not for me they ARE for a lot of other cachers. Caching is what each individual makes of it. It's one of the great things about the hobby - there really is something for everyone. It doesn't matter two hoots whether there are challenges (or just traditionals for that matter) that I can't get; there are plenty there that I can. Challenges are an integral and, for many people, an important part of geocaching and in my view we would be far worse off without them. I'd be more than happy to see them have their own icon. Have some guidelines if you must, such as not having to register intent before starting a challenge or not making the challenge so obtuse that trying to find out if you've qualified is harder than actually achieving the challenge! But whatever you do please don't make the ban permanent!
  20. .......and a lot of the fun is in the logging as well. Definitely get their own accounts!
  21. The webcam caches aren't about just being there. It's all about getting yourself on the webcam's image and that isn't so easy to do!
  22. Yes there is http://coord.info/GC45CC Ye Old Survey Monuments, there's currently 600 trig points and a new one is added about every two weeks. Currently there's 12986 finds and 448 favourites. I like finding them; they vary from a pillar about 4' tall to literally a rivet! I think in both cases you can only log past points and not potentially new ones.
  23. "As to the continued stance on Virtuals, it's really a shame because many public lands managers would love Virtuals - particularly as physical caches aren't going to be allowed, and not everything can be stated in Geological terms no matter how people stretch Earthcaches. I hope HQ finds their footing with enabling the game this year, rather than finding more ways to limit and control it." Totally agree with Dragons West especially the bit about challenges and Virtuals. I've done 6 Virtuals in the last week and all of them have taken me to interesting sometimes educational but definitely all worthwhile places. Challenges also must have a separate icon, it's getting to stage now where half the unknowns are at the location and the other half aren't. It's so obvious really.
