  1. on test... Hmmm! I noticed my microSD card had a .GCD file on it meaning that when I turned the unit on there were TWO operating system files trying to run!!! I guess I must have installed the GCD file to the wrong location when I upgraded to the Beta v2.71?! Deleting this file on that location has corrected (more or less) all of the problems I mentioned earlier. Im now back to v2.70 firmware. However..the problem of Routes disappearing remains when moving data to and from the device. Is anyone experiencing similar problems? What im doing - Sending Routes to my 550T: I use MemoryMap (latest version) and a 1:50k OSGB map and export my walks (routes) by right-clicking on the route line displayed on the map; this sends the gpx file to the GPX folder on the D:/ Garmin drive. - This shows my routes in the Route section of my 550T as it would normally. Retrieving Tracks Ive recorded on the 550T and displaying them in MemoryMap: I have been doing this two ways: 1. Going to the Garmins GPX directory and simply copying out the track (gpx) file and then importin gthis into MemoryMap. 2. Selecting GPS from the main menu, then Import, then Tracks. The second way 'nearly always' deletes other stored routes and tracks on the 550T! Is this characteristic of v2.70? Why do I use MemoryMap? Because as I have the 1:50k OSGB on my 550T I like to see the same map on my PC when planning routes etc! Any constructive info from other users would be helpful... thanks
  2. 2nd unit... Oregon saves tracks but cannot show them in the Track management list!! This is bloody ridiculous! Profiles have gone corrupted again! Im getting my money back.. have had no time to video these problems (sorry!). 2 Oregon 550Ts both with MAJOR problems. V2.70 & Beta v2.71... made no difference! Now the unit doesn’t even upgrade to v2.71! Going back to my 60CSx. Forget Oregon.. Seems too undeveloped.
  3. Actually, nothing you have said in this piece makes your unit any different than the 60CSx.. the Garmin can do ALL of what you have mentioned plus MORE! Moreover, the 60CSx IS WASS & EGNOS enabled and achieves those accuracies like the all of the best GPS units available. Additionally, the 60CSx is the 'preferred' unit. I would advise.. forget the DeLORME go for the Garmin. Garmin are far more reputable. I have also recently aquired an Oregon 550t which has supurb GeoCaching features (much the same as the Colorado), and has the addition of a 3-axis compass which the 60CSx doesnt have.. that said, it's not particulaly essentional but in practice does make using the unit a little easier. However, the biggest reason for the addition of the Oregon (550t) is that i can add OSGB maps which is what I use on my MemoryMap on my PC. Its really nice to plan routes on a PC that are exactly the same as what I see on my GPS. I only wish this could have been the case for my already-brilliant 60CSx. Having said this, the Oregon firmware currently has a bugs which can cause a few unexpected lock ups.. but nothing too serious.. Garmin are pretty good and updating their firmware.. usually! If anyone is interested, I will be doing another GPS in-depth video review (Oregon 550t with MemoryMap) Review after Christmas.. Search Jay1967 on YouTube or click here when it becomes available. Im quite confident this unit will hold up well on its test. with regard to Accuracy.. ive just turned on my Oregon 550t after not using it for a few days (and im inside a building) the screen shows: (Altitude of 72m is spot-on, as printed on my OS map!)
  4. AlunS: its quite clearly stated in the manual you must set the Oregon to NiMH if using those types of Battery! And use the Non-Alkaline type.. also stated. Of course your bat. indicator will be wrong if you dont set this!
  5. Thank you for your reply sTeam. It's a shame really especially having come from using my reliable 60CSx. I bought the 550t as it used OSGB as mentioned. However, since my problems on this unit were pretty serious, i don’t think all Oregon users are experiencing the same problems... if that were the case, I’m sure Garmin would have pulled the product by now? If my replacement unit acts the same, I will video the problems and post it on YouTube.. Ill let everyone know here. Ironically I'd tagged the 550t for a Video Review on YT in the up coming weeks... should be interesting! Thanks again.
  6. I just bought a 550t (im in UK) and upgraded it to the latest v2.70 firmware. I use the OSGB 1:50k Southern England miroSD with it. Initial Problems: 1. The route calculation failed 50% of the time.. when calculating routes 550t displayed error message "Error in Calculating Route" 2. When I go into the Wherigo function, and play the tutorial, the unit will freeze. Only by remving the batteries can I then start to use the unit. 3. On many occasions my OSGB 1:50k map (on microSD card) would not load when pressing the Maps icon from the mani menu. Could only see the Internal Map. The unit was not reliable enough for any proper use. I decided to upgrade to the Beta v2.71 firmware! A drastic move! This is what happened: 1. Solved the routing problem! 2. NEW PROBLEM: GeoCaching Profile corrupts. Then other Profiles started to go missing! 3. Wherigo Problem still hangs unit 4. Unit on several occasions refused to start.. stuck on GARMIN screen so what did i do: well after saying a few colourful words I called Garmin to ask them if they could send me V2.70 (u cannot downgrade unless you ask Garmin direct!). This INITIALLY seemed to solve all the above problems... THEN.. 1. The Wherigo function started to FREEZE the 550t again.. More colourful words and.. I RETURNED THE UNIT! Waiting for a Replacement. Q. Did you have any of these problems? Garmin didnt know about any of them .. apparently!

  8. If you're looking to purchase Groundpeaks iPhone App.. Check out this new Video Review. For version 2.2. Enjoy!
  9. the4creeks, the 60CSx does not display cach info. Text is limited to only a few lines, so what you are trying to achieve cannot be done. However, if you have a win mobile device or an iPhone there are countless programs that allow you to display gpx info. Read around on the forums here.. the 60CSx IMHO is probably the best all-round unit in its class. The newer Garmin units have issues though they will give you the paperless caching. For the paperless cach go the mobile device route (pardon the pun!) .. use the 60CSx for what it was intended.. and you wont go far wrong.
  10. Grasscatcher is totally right.. personally i believe the 60CSx is (overall) the best hand held Garmin ever produced. If you look around on the forums for problems with units, you wont find as many with the 60CSx as you do with all the newer ones. I've used and seen TV reviews on multiple units such as the Colorado/Oregon etc, and although they look nice and have some attractive features they seem to be fraught with heavy compromises that for the price, are not acceptable. Through experience and a lot of reading on the net, I would state that the 60CSx is perhaps one of the most reliable and accurate units out their in its class. Even using the UK GB map (i know this is not as good as the US mapping!), its still spot on and provides me with more functionality than ill probably ever need for caching and walking. I dont like touchscreens PERIOD. Totally inpractical when it comes to outdoor activities. Ive used my 60CSx in subzero temperature being wrapped up like a kipper, I can easily navigate its screens without going to screens i dont want. Question: Do you have an iPhone/iPod? If you want paperless caching, for only a few £ or $ (whatever) you can have just that. I dont know about the rest of you, but no matter what im doing outdoors, my phone is always with me so its no big deal to look at it for the cach info instead of my GPS. Talking of iPhone, I know the iPhone has rubbish battery life but looking at it for cach info and using your GPS for ... well GPS'ing! you can cach all day along, not to mention the convenience of seeing two full screen uints at the same time! I will eventually upgrade my 60CSx, but I dont see ANYTHING out there in its class that would make me do so at this time. KEPP YOU 60CSx... its a great unit and (IMHO) better than all the newer ones.
  11. Just go out and buy aother one! That'll teach her!!! And then return one of them. or send it to me! Side note: My heart goes out to you NO.. dont send it to him... SEND IT TO ME.. IM NICER LOOKING! .. oh hang on, I already got one! LOL
  12. Hey Quimbly.. The proof is in the testing. I used the 60CSx and MapSOurce UK Topo extensively and its EASILY good enough for Geocaching as many users’ could tell you. As one user has already said, its a no-brainer, the UK Topo is your only choice but the map is derived from 1:25k OS maps. OK, not as good or as nice looking as the original OS Maps but they are quite detailed pretty much across the UK. I've never once been let down by the mapping and in some instances has surprised me with its level of detail! As far as the 60CSx goes.. well having used the newer Garmin units too, I still think the 60CSx is the best GPS (all factors considered) to date PERIOD! i.e Power lasts all ever two or more; Rugged, Good functionality, Ergonomics etc. Get the UK Topo, Buu a 2GB microSD (DONT USE SANDISK - there have been issues) bung it in yer 60CSx and you can walk around UK with the Entire UK Topo DVD on yer 60CSx. SORTED! If your interested and want to know about using 3rd party s/ware with the 60CSx such as route planning, I just made an Instruction Video and put it up on YOuTube as requested by some users. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=koLez0mA3Ws Happy GeoCaching/Walking/GPS'ing!
  13. I was asked by several people on how to use Memory-Map and a GPS to Plan and Upload Routes. So, I decided to do an Instruction Video on it and thought I'd share it with you people. Hope its of some use. Its in YouTube in HQ mode.. so check the 'Watch In High Quality' Button! Link: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=koLez0mA3Ws
  14. the Oregon is due out any day now in the UK... Im currently a 60CSx user and wished to get a Colorado .. So my question is... is the Oregon the replacement fro the Colorado? the specs look almost identical? Whats the the offcial word on this? Id be interested to see how the touchscreen looks in direct sunlight... my 60CSx screen is superb in this. Also does it mean one has to remove their gloves to iperate the touchscreen?! Hmmm Its never really that cold in the UK but its more the practicality that could annoy me. However, Oregon looks like a nice piece of kit!
  15. My 60Csx is pretty accurate i'd say about plus or minus 5m on any one reading. Velocity will change as signals are reflected and deflected through ever changing atmosphereic conditions. However, these will usually be very slight. As with pressure, as far as i know the 60Csx takes many readings to determine the altitude through barometric pressure. You say there a swings in pressure.. well of course but these are averaged out to give a faily accurate reading. Swings wont usually be that big unless u so happen to wander into a tornado!
  16. JEEESUSSS!! and I thought the SatMap A10 was plagued with issues!
  17. Hi, I own a Garmin 60CSx not sure how this differes fom the HCX but the GB Topp V2 IMHO is easily good enough for Geocaching. I was caching yesterday in some local park and the detail showed me footpaths (even some very small paths), elevations, wooded areas. All roads are covered, from minor backstreet to Motorways, so you have no worries there. Rural areas show small tracks (maybe not all). If you go to the www.garmin.com site there is a map viewer so you can sample the detail. I believe that the TOPO UK map is your only real choice for GeoCaching in the UK with a Garmin. It's hard to say which scale detail garmin have used on the UK TOPO because I didnt see it stated on the box but I'd say it pretty much based on the OS 1:50k. It comes on a DVD and is 1.7Gb approx for the entire UK. I got all of it (Entire UK Topo) on my 2gb microSD. Generally, Im reasonably happy with it though more detail would bring it inline with some of the Magellan maps I've heard about which Ive been told are even more detailed! To sumup - If you'e got a Garmin, then u got no other choice but I dont think you'll be too disappointed!

  19. As you may already know Datums are mathematical models of the earths surface and are updated once every blue moon! However WGS 84 and other models in your GPS are accurate enough as much cartography is based on them. What you've experienced could be many reason.. to make an accurate assumption that one is more accurate than the other you would have to base a multiple test in different conditions to see if you have exactly the same results. I would think that in your case your results could have been subjected to reflected signals delaying the GPS timing therefore giving lightly inaccurate or freak results! It's only a guess but if i were you I'd leave it on WGS 84 as this is a very popular and widely used datum. Though GPS is 3-5 meters now with the absence of SA it doesn’t mean that is what you will always get. 3-5m is with DGPS ON don't forget! Most of the time its more like 10-20m.
  20. I too have 60CSx but i dont have this problem. First thing is to check your map datum in the system settings as the wrong datum could recalculate your input data. Also you might wanrt to check your co-ords format as this could be rounding numbers up or down. I have mine set to position format: hddd mm.mmm on WGS 84 Datum. if this fails try marking your own co-ords then upload to your pc then download back to your Garmin. If it still shows the same error you may want to return your unit. hope this helps.
