  1. Here in Idaho, I have had occassion to use the "polling" feature. It uses the RADIO SIDE of the unit and not the satelight side...so...you are controlled by line of sight. My buddys (dirt bikers we are) all have the rino series. When seperated by a mountain or a LOT of trees, it makes it harder to get a "presence" signal. When you ride to the top of a hil and "PING" them by pressing the talk button it will give you there location. All you have to do is select the location and choose "GO TO" it will guide you just like an address. Make sure EVERYBODY is on the same channell and squelch code. I have used the Rino 530 for 9 months and now am buying the Rino 530 HCX..........It is a much better unit.
  2. To JeffAlaska: The "polling" is easy to set up. It is in you Radio page set up. You want to ENABLE the polling or peer to peer function. Next you want to setup the same channel to use and monitor with the same squelch code........This means your radio will only accept these signals With that done and the radio ON You or your buddy can send a "location" every time they "key" the mike. If they are in range they will come in on your map................ If you give yourselfs name in the set up stages the Name of your friend will be there also
  3. In regard to "peer position".......ALL Rinos have this ability. Your radio has to be on the same freguency setting and you must have "polling" turned on.... All rinos will be able to contact each other. However , keep in mind, it is mostly line of sight.....Large buildings and high ridges or dense trees will not help the rino radio fuctions. That being said....This weekend my riding partner got seperated and we were able to find each other using the "polling" feature. We were less then a half mile apart in trees and he come up on the map screen with his name and location.............Pretty Neat............
  4. Regarding new Rino 530 HCX........I ride dirt bikes here in Idaho. I currently own RINO 530.....My Friends and I have rinos but have been waiting to upgrade. Cabela's got some in.....but my friend beat me to the punch. He bought his and now they are awaiting the next order. Went to the mountains riding yesterday. I compared mine with his new HCX. We are riding in his truck going down the highway and I took both Rinos and "hid" them under the dash. Pulled them out and his new HCX had 5 satlites showing and mine had none. We are up on a mountain trail elavation at 6400 nothing above but sky. His had 9 satlites and mine showed 7..... From what I have seen it is worth the upgrade....I'm going to get one. Bought a 2 gig card already. Now just waitng on Cabela's
  5. Yes...City Buildings and Woods will effect the effeciancy of the "locator" ability. The RADIO SIGNAL gets "blocked" by buildings , Ridges, moutains, etc. I have been less then a 1/2 mile away from my friends riding in the mountain trails and if they are over the ridge (out of sight) the radio waves cannot see them either. The way to help remedy this, ......is to ride to a high point yourself and them "summon" them with a keyed mike button...........You will usually see your contact appear on the map screen. Since you have high ground advantage. These Rinos are great units..........................I have a 530..hoping for the 530 HCX soon....................
  6. The "locator" function of the Rino Series uses the radio transmitting signal of the GPS. This will be functional out to as much as 2 - 10 miles in IDEAL "line of sight" situations. By my experience, when used in mountain and canyon terrain.........if your Buddy is out of sight. It is pretty much useless..........The GPS don't know where he is either. When used out in the Southern Idaho deserts, it is much more able to put a Contact on the map screen. I am going to get the new one as soon as it gets a release....The Rinos are a multifuctional tool and an excellant mapping GPS.......I just wish the radio part of it had more range.....BUT..OH WELL. I use the "old" Mapsource Topo map for my rides.........It works great. I have not seen much difference with the new 2008 Topo maps. I probably will not buy it. My plans are to get the City Navigator V8... That is why I am holding out for the new Rino model that will take memory cards.............................
  7. I bought a new Rino 530 in February. I have been learning to use it. I was real undecided for some time before the purchase. I wanted the 60CSX for the new chip...but...I use my rino in dirt bike riding of trails with two other Rino users. Since Feb. I have been happy with the way rinos work. The "location of your Buddy" could be better...but OH. Well..........I hardley ever use the talking mode of the radio. I bought it at Cabelas and I am waiting for the release of the new model. According to Cabelas' policy of "Satisfaction Quaranted" they will allow me to RETURN at full amount on another. It has LOST SIGNAL a few times in the Mountain trails here in Idaho..........It loses some of the tracking....I hope the new model will FILL THE GAPS I am pleased with the mapping capabilities of the Rino................... IN MY OPINION.....if you do not need the radio functions.........BUY THE 60 CSX
  8. Over the past two weeks....a problem comes and goes... When using a rino 530 in compass mode the "shaft" of the pointer breaks up and drifts to the side of the circle.............The only part of the pointer that works is the arrow head. Do I have a symptom of more problems to come??? Everything else works fine....... This gps is a good solid unit and I have been using it for about 2 1/2 months. Has anyone else experianced simular compass problems??? Thanks.......
  9. Hello....Again I am posting on another question with the rino 530 Yes , I bought a Rino 530.....My application for now is NOT Geocaching But rather Motorcycling (dirt bike style)....However your groups Knowledge base is a wonderful souce to tap into. There are 3 of our group with rinos....one 130 and 2 of us with 530's Can we share Mapsouce Topo???? Can we share City Navigator??? Every time I turn my 530 on it goes back to NO Backlighting. I have to once again enter display setup and set it to 20%....It is difficult for my 58 year old eyes to see without backlight. HOW can I get it to ALWAYS be set at 20%??? I bought this unit from Cabelas...I was pleased with their price matching.......$373.99 THANKS for the help
  10. THANK You all for the replys. Because the Rhino can't "SEE" could enough through the trees. I probably will get the 60csx or even the 76 csx..................more mapping functions and memory cards. Thanks again
  11. Hi All.......... I live around Boise, Idaho and ride off road motercycles. Desert, Foothills, and Mountains. I am considering a purchase of either the 60csx or perferably the Rino 530. The reason I say Rino perfered is that a ridding buddy has one. Question 1....using the "polling" feature. Does the rino use 5 watts or 1/2 watt......... Question 2....If you are seperated by a timbered ridge and 1/2 to 1 mile apart will it make contact? Question 3....Would I be beeter off with the 60csx and a cheap radio? My buying a gps is about 75% usage of the compass and mapping features. I really could care less for the talking part of the radio. It is the contact or Polling feature I would be using.............. Another question....How does the 56 meg memory work? When it gets full can you erase and "load" again? Thank You all.................
