quote: carleenp wrote:Yes, I think that is right, but I doubt in reality that geocaching is looking to use material uploaded in a particulary worrisome way. Says who? How can you realistically make a statement like that? In reality, companies do this type of thing every day. quote: carleenp wrote:I think the main reason for the language is to avoid geocaching being sued if they post (which they do everytime a person uploads something) or re-post something and someone get annoyed and tries to sue them for it. The wording that we're referring to (section 5) has nothing to do with what you're talking about. It's about license rights for them to use our images or intellectual property for whatever purpose they should choose, without having to ask our permission to do so. It's too broad for my liking. quote: carleep wrote:...they can set the terms of service, which are pretty standard legal mumbo jumbo here. They do set the terms of use, and after being made aware of the newly updated terms of use today, I will no longer upload my photographs to the website. I find it odd that a lawyer would use the expression "standard legal mumbo jumbo". *****

I think you may have to contact the site admins directly to have your previous photos removed. Deleting them from your list of photos on your profile page does not delete them from the site. I also agree, if anyone does not agree with these terms of the site, they should not upload future images. Thanks for bringing up this topic. *****

A discussion in these forums has prompted me to ask the following: When you sign-up for a service or upload files on/to the web, do you read the terms and conditions of the website first? *****

According to the TOU, they could approach Jeremy and _he_ could benefit from it instead of me. I do have a problem with that. Possibly, but unlikely. Your copy probably has better resolution, given the 100K limit. Good point Sissy-n-CR. It just wouldn't be fair. Your point is moot Fuzzies -- if a web media company wanted to buy it, the resolution would be fine. ***** edit: typo [This message was edited by Jomarac5 on August 27, 2003 at 02:17 PM.]

It's not so much the profit aspect -- it's that an image might be used somewhere that I don't feel is appropriate or acceptable. Or it may not be acknowledged that I am the photographer. Your suggestion to place them on my own website makes perfect sense. *****

quote: Warm Fuzzies - Fuzzy wrote:Are you really saying you want a cut of that action? No. Not at all. What bothers me is the ambiguity that they can sell or rent or in some manner make my copyright property available to anyone else of their choosing. By their terms, they could sell (and profit from) my photograph to another website, or magazine, or other organization or individual. That steps over the line of the permission that I'm willing to allow them. *****

I understand what Warm Fuzzies is saying, but here's where I have a problem -- Groundspeak is saying that they can *sell*, or *rent* *my* copyright property *without* offering me any reimbursement or consideration whatsoever. I don't think I'll be uploading any more photographs. *****

HOW TO CREATE A GREAT CACHE EXPERIENCE
Jomarac5 replied to Jomarac5's topic in General geocaching topics
GPSaxaphone, I've found lots of caches with holes in the bags from pencils, as you've mentioned. I think part of the reason is the length of the pencil. If the pencil is longer than the width or height of the bag, the point end is forced in the to edge of the bag. I've found that using shorter pencils works pretty good. I buy golf pencils at the dollar store or at an office supply store -- they're usually about 20 for a buck. I put two or three in with the log book, and a pen. So far, I haven't had any pencil holes in the log book bags. ***** -
HOW TO CREATE A GREAT CACHE EXPERIENCE

Another thread that I was reading made me think of this one: Put Cache Contents in Plastic Bags When putting your cache together, put everything that might be adversely effected by moisture in ziploc bags. ***** -
Hey MercRocks, Great idea! After reading your post, I've disabled my Looking Down Lindeman cache as well, since it's in a back country area. It might not stop anyone from going there or logging the cache if they really want to, but perhaps it will persuade some to wait until the fire risk has dropped. I'll also be referring other cachers that I know to this post. Thanks for showing your concern for the preservation of our forests. *****

HOW TO CREATE A GREAT CACHE EXPERIENCE

quote: Secenca wrote:A unique location that is "special" to the cache hider. This is a very good point. If the cache owner places a cache at a location that they personally enjoy, they're more likely to be interested in what others think of the location -- creating even more excitement for the cache placer. ***** -
StealHead[bC], it may be possible depending on the boat, to beach the boat near the campground, south of the falls. If that's not possible, there's a dock on the north side of Granite falls that you could tie up to, and if necessary, some of us could paddle over and pick you up -- no problem there. *****

Whoa, Sax man, take a deep breath. Firstly, I didn't say that *you* called anyone anything. It was getting out of control -- can you not see that? It was chaos man -- go back and take a look at the closed threads that you're refering to -- they were confrontational in nearly every respect. What was Jeremy supposed to do -- let people post nasty insulting comments about himself, the admins, and everything about the way the site is run? Would you let something like that happen on *your* forums? Say what you want, but say with some civility. Maybe the answers you get will be equally civil. And yes, this thread is for complaining, so go ahead and complain some more if you wish. When you get tired of that, you might want to drop in over at Pat's place if you want to yak with some friends about the concerns that you have (or anything else for that matter). It's just a game. And it's supposed to be fun. Have fun. *****

StellHead[bC], yes, please work on a way to join us -- it's a great spot and it would be nice to meet up with you and yours. I hadn't thought of something regarding driving in until I watched the news about the fires last night -- I'd hazard a quess that the road from Squamish is probably closed off now to keep people out. Haven't heard anything about this specificly, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were the case. Hope you can make it. *****

Hey Sax man, things were getting way out of hand -- and Jeremy's left a thread open where the discussion can be a lot less informal. No need to start up new threads for the purpose of calling someone an idiot. Chill out buddy. *****

I'll be checking with the parks board for their recommendation regarding kayaking in Indian Arm before we head out for the kayak cache event. Although we're not going far from the shoreline at any stop, I agree, it would be terrible if someone accidentally started a fire. Of course, I won't be calling the parks board until a few days before the event as a lot can change in the next couple of weeks. If necessary, the event may have to be called off at the last moment. I certainly understand the reasoning for closing the parks and not going into the high risk areas is a small price to pay to ensure the preservation of those areas. Those who ignore the park closures are not making any brownie points with me. I sure hope it rains soon. *****

I'm not concerned about traffic. When I placed a couple of mine that are a bit off of the beaten track, I did so with the expectation that they wouldn't get a lot of visits. But that doesn't bother me -- I chose some pretty nice spots to put those caches and those that make the effort to go to them will be amply rewarded with some great scenery. I suppose that future logs will tell the story. *****
