  1. I just noticed today that there was a name on one of my cache page logs that was not in the physical log when I checked on it. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and check again in case I just missed it seeing as I was doing regular maintenance and not specifically checking logs for inaccuracies. The cacher is from another country and was visiting Oregon for a few weeks in August. They completed the 7 while here. None of this seems all that unlikely, but they never signed the physical log. There was one cache in their home country which was logged on the same day as a few from here, but that could have been an entry error. Oh, Lord. I'm becoming one of you! I've actually spent time looking this guys (gals) profile up to check for discrepancies! I just don't get the point of cheating with no gain. I don't agree with cheating anyway, but at least understand when someone does it to try to get ahead. But a cartoon pic on a page on the computer which, other than by people falling into the dismal hole of becoming cache NSA , will never be seen? Why go through the trouble?
  2. 5 bucks and I'll send you the final for my multi. Just saying.
  3. Count me into the minority. I need all the help I can get when trying to find a cache, and knowing what size I'm looking for makes a huge difference. Usually I have my bag with me with trades and TB's, but if I don't feel like carrying it, I'll throw a few in my pockets. If I can leave them, great. If it ends up being a bison tube in a fake rock, no sweat. Without knowing the size I'm looking for, I probably wouldn't find it anyway! I realize that this is my problem and that not everyone needs the extra help.
  4. Is this thread crumbling or was there ever any structure? My head hurts.
  5. Nice. Thanks for the info. I really did have that figure off. FWIW I will probably still use that as an excuse when I see to many pokeys!
  6. I'm not sure what the "standard 15' allowance" is in this sentence. Around here, our search area is a combination of my unit's inaccuracy and the hider's unit's inaccuracy. Are you suggesting hiders in your region also typically throw in up to 15' of random inaccuracy (i.e. "soft coordinates")? Sorry, the 15' I was referring to was the inaccuracies of both the CO's as well as another 15' for my unit. You, sir hit the nail on the head!!! In reality I only made a feeble attempt at walking a large circle and got back in the car. Narcissa, all I can say is within 15 meters in bull thistles and you'd begin searching? You my friend are a stud! I don't care if you are male or female (can I use those terms, I don't remember? ). You rock! Now it's time for me to put on my dunce cap. I'm starting to feel like I don't understand how the units work. Sorry crites, I'm hijacking this thread, but maybe others will find this useful as well. My understanding is that the CO's unit can be off 15'. Then my unit can be off an additional 15' if it zeroed out which doesn't happen. That possibly puts me at roughly 30' from GZ depending on circumstances. Then with my unit having 20' accuracy, it leaves me at 50' from GZ (I know that it is as unlikely to be maximally inaccurate as it would be to be dead on). Now with this reference, I don't know if I'm off to the East, or West (for sake of argument). Than means that I have to search a 100' circle to cover "GZ". Mostly not a problem for me til I see the thorns . But is this not how the accuracy works? For what it's worth, it was a crystal clear sky with not trees anywhere near.
  7. This makes an idea I've been throwing around for a while sound much more possible. I have a lot of work to do.
  8. I live under the principle of you get what you give. I have done logs in which I have created entire stories around my experience. Just don't expect one if your cache is a hide a key stuck to the back of a guardrail.
  9. I just logged a DNF where my Oregon suddenly decided to only have 20' accuracy. 20' accuracy plus the standard 15' allowance plus the 15' allowance for the CO's unit. I don't want to wander that much looking for a micro in bull-thistles!
  10. It's probably 50/50 for me. I prefer caching with family/friends however. Always good idea to have a partner just in case. Always a good idea to tell someone your plans, and always a good idea to have a back up plan. Sounds like you know what you're doing, and given this a lot of thought. I'm not going to preach to the choir, so to speak. The only thing different that I do when I'm out alone, is to carry a PLB (aka SPOT). Delorme also makes a similar product (InReach). There are many places that don't have cell phone signal in my area, that I can't depend on my phone. +1 I really believe in over preparedness when it comes to safety.
  11. For someone who claims to be quite content saying things the way you see them regardless of their "meanness", you sure seem to worry an awful lot about what your community might say. I would list according to the guidelines and in the description say that is how you rated it even though your local community seems a little tougher and would consider it lower. We all enjoy a good natured ribbing, right? I would just be sure not to include the crybaby comments.
  12. I think that was exactly what should have been done and I wouldn't have worried about leaving a trade. At the point that they are exposed and rusted they become like so many ill protected trades, garbage to be removed. Although I consider there to be a difference between knives, ammunition (loaded or not) and a fishing hook that is properly placed. I understand concerns of sharp and rusty, but I've cut myself on the rusty lock mechanism of an ammo can. I've poked myself on a rusty metal name tag that had been in a damp cache for far to long. And that is not even to go into what nature's wrath has done to me! The fact is we all enjoy a hobby that is inherently dangerous. Though I constantly get caught up in the moment and rush to open and sort, there is always a danger. A drug user dropping a glass pipe or needle in, sharp edges of a container, hobo and black widow spiders, even rattlesnakes and scorpions are always possibilities when caching. I know that in our current world of "if it's not safe, it needs to go" it's easiest to just say no, but where does it stop? That cute little compass you left can just as easily be pulled apart and that needle could cut a child, or they could drink the fluid. That marble kid A found could end up in the hands of kid B who tries to swallow it and chokes. The dollar store car? You guessed it, sharp steel (rusty) axles, broken plastic undercarriage, and more than likely, lead in the paint. I'm not disagreeing with those who have voiced concern. They would absolutely have to be packaged properly, but we can't bubble wrap the world in the name of safety. Utherwise, how long until venturing into the woods or lifting a skirt or searching a guardrail is deemed to dangerous and can lead to injury. Then where would we as cachers be?
  13. Ok. Barbless hook, stuck in a cork which is glued to the bottom of a plastic container with the cap glued on. If they can stick themselves with that, I'd start worrying more about the pen or pencil for signing the log! I'd like to find something like that. I think I'll tell my nephew to start using his flies as signatures.
  14. But my question is, how do you view the guidelines: a- Like a game rule book? b- Like some orientation ideas? c- Like some words that idealists wrote? d- Guidelines, never seen them... e- Whatever!!!! f- None of the above, I have another opinion... Thanks for the answers!!!! Are you sure? It seems an awful lot like you're taking a pretty active standpoint for an argument you seem to make a lot around here for someone wanting to know others opinions. We have disagreed in the past and I will never say that I understand caching in Brazil, but it seems as you have a misunderstanding. You continually talk about rules, give examples of law breaking, and compare this "hobby" to professional sports. As stated by many here with opinions with varying degrees of agreement with you, they are guidelines. I for one don't remember the page entitled "Rules and Laws of Geocaching".
  15. Take a look at the ads thru the links. It really has everything in one walking stick. A knife, a blowgun, a camera mount, etc. I did not see a concealed flask, unfortunately. You said "everything"! I wonder if with the right adaptors that would be good for those caches with "bring a battery" in the description!
  16. I've forgotten to log a DNF until a few months later when I finally did find it. But NM? I don't get that. Maybe they just really needed to post something that day. I can see it: "well, no finds. No DNF's. I know! There was that cache last December. It needed maintenance! It's not like it's been a year or anything. Bet they thought they'd gotten away with that one!"
  17. There was a box?!! I am a simple man with simple thoughts, but this is how I see it. This is a listing service by a private company. That makes it their house. They call the shots and can ask their guests to leave if they wish. They are guarding all the doors, they are holding all the keys, Neo. GS called them guidelines. I have to believe that they did this intentionally. They did not call them rules, or laws, or orders passed down by the high council. They wanted guidelines so that they could allow us our creativity. Where rules are rigid and result in loopholes and ever changing subsections to keep up with a constantly evolving, ever changing game, guidelines are soft and flexible while directing our paths. Not forcing us down a particular predetermined path. But it's still their show. To have the flex accepted, we are to contact our reviewers. Let them no what we are thinking. Have a mature, adult like, conversation with them. Then they have the ability to allow bending or if they see potential for future issues, they can deny with the guidelines behind their decision backing them up. When a company has been around for a period of time, it seems to be human nature to think that the customers create the demand and therefore have a say. We must remember that we are visitors. It's their home field. They have tried to allow us as much creative room as possible while still assuring a future game for their business to list. What letter that fits under is up to you. That's just my thoughts. But I am just a simple man with simple thoughts.
  18. Uber Ultra Elite Premium Plus Membership. Invitation only. And like $40 a year!
  19. It's my understanding that the guideline is to prevent commercial advertising, ie specific brands or restaurants. This appears to be more of a play on the term since it is hidden in a game reserve which is home to cattle. This seems less commercial to me than a cache in a fast food parking lot which is widely approved and used.
  20. I can help. As a beginner, start with lower difficulty puzzles!
  21. On another note, has anybody noticed the newsletter this week? It may just be me but it sure seems like GS is realizing a negative impact and now wants us to "brush up on the basics" and then "share our knowledge" with a noob. Maybe this is a regular thing for them that I'm to new to know about. I've never had a problem teaching others anything I know about but this sounds to me a little closer to "let's all be a big happy community and clean up this mess we've made". -Note: All quotes are very loose interpretations. Please no nasty grams.-
  22. We only have two caches that we have hidden. Although the second is PMO, the idea was to limit traffic to the location. I realize that this one could be muggled, or vandalized just as easy. But at the same time, I try to be careful of what caches I place other people's trackables in. Just sayin.
  23. Yes. That does seem to be true. But I'm one of the few that find a trail filled with pill bottles (or any free leaky micro container that will never be maintained) for miles and miles is no incentive to go walking on that trail. And it irritates me that a perfectly fine trail has been ruined by leaky cheap containers that were placed for the numbers. And if your cache happens to have been placed anywhere on the trail first or nearby, you can forget about getting any decent logs from then on. They'll all be cut and paste "Found xxx caches today. I can't remember which one was yours. Thanks for the smiley." Seems to me that the only way for this to happen is if you were the first to place a leaky cheap container like everyone after you. If you make a good hide, you'll get good logs. If you place a small lock&lock behind the log, or pill bottle in the stump, or a bison tied to a tree limb, you guessed it, "can't remember anything about yours. TFTC"
  24. And I tip my GPSr to you for all you have done for the game. My "armchair" statement wasn't against you as a cacher, just that unless I missed something, this particular cache is one you have not looked for. I have not pulled your profile and sorted through everything you have ever done as a cacher like many on the forums do. I'm not a cache cop, nonetheless the cache FBI! It's great that you have taken a proactive approach, but oftentimes that can grow into something else before we know it. I will assume the previous archivals were completed under standard guidelines of you found the cache, it had issues, you reported, the system worked. By the way, I hope when those were archived, you re-hid legit caches to share with more people. Also, I hope that you cleared the geotrash from the caches that were archived.
