  1. I expect most people fail on their first, and probably next few, attempts because they don't understand how the search is intended to work. Every effort should be made to avoid a user's first search failing, because the value of the tool is instantly degraded if it doesn't do what they think it should do and they assume it just doesn't work. This has been repeatedly demonstrated by people posting here in the forums.

In addition to the in-person user testing we continue to conduct for the new search tool (and other features), we've been listening to the struggles, requests, and complaints that people have shared in these forums and through other feedback channels. With all that feedback in mind, we've deployed several follow-on releases to the search tool with improvements such as:

    • Making home location and current location searches more discoverable by suggesting them from the main search box
    • Re-working regional searches (e.g. all caches in Canada) so that they are accessible from the main search box and to all members
    • Letting users pick between a radius search or going directly to the cache page when they enter a GC code
    • Creating a one click featured search for discovering upcoming events in your area
    • Refining autocomplete fields for better keyboard accessibility
    • Adding links to the old search forms and the FAQ for the new search tool

Although there's plenty of improvements still to make - we're working on more right now - we've focused so far on some the top issues that users have expressed since the initial release a couple months ago.

Why does it point to a blog post? Wouldn't it make more sense to point it to the Advanced Search FAQ in the Help Center? They currently seem to contain the same content, but if there are any changes, it's more likely that the Help Center article would be updated, not an old blog post.

The relevant sections of the linked blog post have been repeatedly updated as we've released the changes described above.

  2. However, when clicking the 'Clear Search Filters' button in Internet Explorer, '404 - file not found' is shown. It still appears to work fine in Chrome.

This issue should now be fixed. Please let us know if you continue to get the 404 error after clicking the "Clear Search Filters" button.

  3. However, when clicking the 'Clear Search Filters' button in Internet Explorer, '404 - file not found' is shown. It still appears to work fine in Chrome.

We have completed work on a fix for this bug. It should be released next week.

  4. The initial search field clearly states 'City, State, GC code' - HOWEVER when I enter a valid GC code it returns a 'DNF' result. I have to take the extra time to go into the old advanced search and enter it into the 'GC Code' field. Any fix in the works for this?

Can you share the GC code which is resulting in the DNF message so we can attempt to reproduce the error if there is one?

Right now, if you enter a valid GC code in the search box the tool will return search results centered around the location of that cache. As long as the GC code you searched for is not archived, that cache should be the top listing in the results. We realize this is not quickest solution for directly looking up known GC codes, so we are currently working on an update that will give users the option to choose between the current results or instead navigating directly to the page for the GC code entered (including archived caches). That update should be ready for release soon.

  5.

I have found a simple Format Problem when using your 3 most interesting searches (Events, oldest geocaches, geocaches with favorite Points). The Problem is that my home coordinates (something near 48.xxxx 10.yyyyy) are used in a "wrong" Format will say it is used with a delimiting comma instead of a decimal Point. This Looks like 48,842266, 10,100942 (this is a direct copy out of the search window) and - of course - it leads to a DNF. When I correct the given coordinates by simply entering a decimalpoint after the 48 and 10 the search works, but unfortunately not the 3 given most favorite searches. Please try to correct - I'm sure These searches are also if interest for me!

    Thanks in advance H_M_A

Thanks for reporting this H_M_A. We are able to reproduce your issue and we'll work on a fix for the bug.

  6. The performance problems reported earlier should now be resolved. Our teams diagnosed and fixed a few issues unrelated to this week's release. Please let us know if you continue to see the same or new issues. Thanks again for your patience.

  7. Hi folks,

We are aware of the reported problems on the site. Our IT and development teams are working to resolve them as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

  8. I just tried one of the standard searches (all in NSW sorted by Favourite points - the rightmost of the three)

That worked fine, but when I clicked "Change Filters" and then clicked the "Not found by me" button it came back and said 'Gill & Tony' is not a valid user name. Also happened with "Not owned by me" as well.

    Cheers

    Tony

Hi, Tony. Thanks for reporting your issue. We released a couple updates this afternoon, including a fix for this bug. Please report back if you continue to see the same problem.

  9. The bad news: we released a new version of the search page yesterday which unfortunately introduced a bug in loading the root page.

The good news: we're working on a fix now and we hope to have it out very soon. As NYPC noticed above, the fixed release will include a few much requested improvements. Thanks for your patience!
