  1. Ignore the plugin and simply click the GPX button on the cache page and save it on the unit in the [drive]:\garmin\gpx folder while the unit is hooked up in mass storage mode. Done - actually better - you get 20 logs instead of 5. Takes almost exactly the same amount of time to do as the plugin. Thanks, that works great, I'll never use the stupid plug-in again!
  2. The only time I really appreciate the dog attribute being used is when dogs are specifically not allowed in areas that look and sound like they would be a great place to take my dog. Nothing worse than to pack up the dog and drive an hour or more only to find "No Dogs Allowed" signs posted. It really helps to know in advance to leave the dog at home, skip the cache in question or to bring along the cloaking device.
  3. A certificate to exchange at a local jewelry store for a pair of diamond earrings! When I went to redeem the certificate you should have seen the look on the young man's face when I handed it over, he was sputtering a bit and didn't know what to do. Luckily, his boss (an avid cacher) was there and I walked out with the aforementioned earrings. I figured it would have been bad form to ask what they retailed for though so I can't tell you the $$ value. Since I don't do the guy earring thing I gave them to my favorite geo-babe. One happy gal let me tell you.
  4. All caching is local! I have observed that there are different ways of viewing this depending on locale. In my area, the unwritten rule goes something like this: If you were present when the cache was hidden you are welcome to log it as a find but only after you have returned to the cache on a separate visit. May not seem like a big deal but if the cache involves a 10-mile hike then you can see that it can be a big deal. And don't even think of trying to claim a FTF, that would earn you instant 'jerk' status around here and you would be roundly pilloried at any and all geocacher gatherings!
  5. I have a cache hidden near the bottom of Thomas Creek Bridge, the "tallest bridge in Oregon". It doesn't get visited much but one time while another local cacher was taking his grandson and a friend for a little adventure they discovered the body of a young woman who had been murdered elsewhere and subsequently dumped over the bridge by the killer. Needless to say, he and the kids never did go on to find the cache, they beat it post haste to report their findings to the authorities. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...4c-b1ff332bf64f
  6. I've done a fair share of caching since January. Just have not been logging online (have my own reasons).. Even went on a recent cache trip and nabbed about 30-40 and didn't log any of them. The others in the group did though. I may not have placed a lot of caches, but I believe in quality, not quantity. When you say I've experienced "trouble", could you be a bit more specific? The one I recently disabled was voted as one of the best views in the Portland east side. It was disabled because the puzzle was removed from the cache page. I am currently working on working around the issue so I can enable it again. I'm currently working on another cache that has been in the works for about 6 months. Could you be a little more specific in the "trouble" you are referring to? The fact that you are pulling numbers off my account to pass judgment is one of the reasons I don't log my finds anymore. Specifically, the majority of your hides are out of action. Pulling numbers? Just trying to see what part of the coast you were referring to in your original post, not too sinister. I should have stated that I agreed with your original premise. Passing judgement? Not really, more of an observation than a judgement. I did offer a couple of suggestions for areas and the type of caches you would probably enjoy, did you see that part of my post? I don't post a lot in the forums, bear with me a bit until I can figure out how to do it without ticking people off. Thanks.
  7. Seems to me that you just didn't make it far enough down the coast to get to the good stuff. You might have made it if you didn't waste so much time on caches you don't like. I've got about 50 caches hidden off hwy 101, only 2 of them are lame but there's a reason for them too. I was interested in seeing what caches you were referring to but you haven't logged a find since January. I also noted that you have experienced some trouble with your own cache hides. I'm not pounding on you, just poking. If you want some really good caching, visit Cape Arago or the Brookings area. There are NO LPCs in either area and darn few guardrail caches.
  8. I'd like to do that also, just don't know how to post an external link in a "found it" log. Any help?
  9. My only FTF "encounter" happened on a 6 part mystery cache. While I was the first to find the final stage, I was only able to do so because I had run into two fellow cachers at two of the stages leading up to the final. On both occasions, they found that leg first and with no game playing simply handed me the log to sign in. I would have never made it to final much less be the first without their help. After arriving at the parking area for the final, they discovered that they made an error figuring out the final coords and had to go back to a park sign to re-do. I was unaware of this at the time, all they had to do was ask me what I got for the final coords and I would have gladly compared notes. But they went back to re-figure while I found the final. I left it in place so that they could find it and claim FTF but they would have none of it, they simply stated that first to find is first to find. I learned a lot about caching etiquette that day from two first rate pros. Since that time we have enjoyed "beta-testing'" many of each other's caches and having fun going after others' caches for the FTF. Great fun.
  10. We have a lot of hiking caches in my area, some 2, 5, 10 miles plus round trip. The challenge of the hike and the destination basically IS the cache. I've seen quite a few logs that a person was with someone else while hiding a cache and did not log as a find. But upon returning in the future after having done the hike again and "finding" the cache they have logged as a find. I think that this is legitimate and within the spirit of the game.
  11. Stinging nettles, my arch nemesis, gawd how I hate them. The pain lasts for over 12 hours for me, sounds like I might be hyper sensitive to the stuff after reading earlier posts. BUT, I don't react to PO so there is a little yin and yang for you. I'm often found in the dumbest places wearing shorts but at least these devils are easily whacked with the trekking pole. Eat em?, not in this lifetime!
