  1. quote:Originally posted by Mr. Rose: I am finding that the Ifinder is the most advanced unit and most "honest" when it comes to estimated gps accuracy. Believe I'll have to ask you to explain this one . Are there data to support your claim or is this empirical? don
  2. Hey, poll master, you spelled MagellAn incorrectly. I think that's why it isn't getting many votes--nobody has a MagellEn.
  3. There's a lot of 4.02'ing and 4.03'ing going on in this and other posts. 4.02 is for the Meridian series, in different incarnations, for the green and the other Meridian models. 4.03 is for the SportTrack series. The Meridian and SportTrack units are not the same, so it is unwise to get them mixed up when you install/upgrade the firmware. To avoid confusion for the viewing public and new geocachers, please post 4.02 when you mean 4.02, and 4.03 when you mean 4.03. don
  4. quote:Originally posted by GOT GPS?:my Meridian screen would be just about blank, until it warmed up, it also could not recieve sats until then either.. If the screen is blank, how do you know the status of the satellites? I have not used a Garmin, but I am happy with both of my Magellans (Green and ST Pro). The accuracy of the maps is area dependent. It has been reported here many times that the Magellan and Garmin maps BOTH leave a lot (a lot is two words, not one) to be desired. don
  5. So you're what woke me up this morning. Thought it was mosquito season already....
  6. For the most part, those who post that they're going to quit are just like those who call talk radio shows to say they're not going to listen any more 'cause they're pissed at the topic or host. They just want to vent--they don't stop listening. The poor soul who says he's going to commit suicide doesn't want to, just wants help that they can't give themselves. So, CCC, do you need help or do you just want to vent? The doctor is 'IN' and waiting for your phone call.
  7. Agree. My deliveries on the 10th and 12th were at 6:xx PM and 9:xx PM. But the delivery on the 17th came at 5:49 AM. This is how it used to be, and I like it better this way. Hope it is here to stay. don
  8. Spyder 40, you mentioned EasyGPS three times and ExpertGPS once in your two posts. Which one do you really have? I have not heard of Topofusion until now, but I can't imagine it having more utility than ExpertGPS, which allows the simultaneous display of Topo and Sat photos with all the waypoints and tracks you could ever need. Plus there is an updated version just out. don
  9. quote:Originally posted by Duaut:http://www.ftp.kkc.tzo.com/Magellan/index.htm It's the most godaweful slowest connection for downloading the file. The ftp site is ftp.kkc.tzo.com login = magellan pw = meridian Ain't that the truth. But twice I have tried and both times I get a corrupted file notice when I try to install. Any ideas? (Cable modem) don
  10. quote:Originally posted by TEAM 360:Stick with True North. I also have the feature to set the compass on Magnetic readings or GPS course readings. Walking along railroad tracks is not the time to have it set to magnetic ANYTHING. For the novices who won't know what you meant to say.... The GPSr will not be affected by the railroad tracks regardless of mode or orientation; A compass will be affected regardless of declination adjustment. don
  11. quote:Originally posted by Stunod:The link mentioned above was for another hack going around that modified one of the map disclaimers...that one would need a card. Creating a map uses a text config file, and some of the information shows up on the map copyright page(after the Magellan banner). The information can be changed in the config file before creating a map, which allows you to put your name, phone, etc. in place of the default notices. The Meridians need an SD card to upload a map to, but the ST Map and Pro can also use this feature/hack. don
  12. quote:Originally posted by Dirtnapper:If the cup is not holding...try a little bit of veggitable oil; just a drop and rub it in...should do it. For those interested, in the field veggie oil may be hard to find. The oil from the side of the nose is usually available and works well. We use this method at work when sliding small-diameter flexible tubing onto nipple fittings for use in vacuum(low pressure) applications. I believe the reason this works for suction cups is that the oil displaces gas molecules from the cup surface and forms a seal at the cup edge, where if one looked closely enough, you would not find it very smooth. The oil helps seal the rough, porous surface (some of you engineering types jump in if you have more details). don

  14. quote:Originally posted by Cracker7M:I REALLY wish Magellan would make a Meridian case based on their neoprene Sportrak case.. Art / Agree completely. Have one for my Pro. At first it looks like it won't work because the Meridians are pear-shaped--fatter at the bottom. But I think it would work if the case slipped on from the top. Just need a very secure fastening system at the bottom. don
  15. That begs the question: Are any and all rights the same as most rights? After reading the It's the Law! article in the March 2003 issue of Pop Photo & Imaging, there may well be a dozen caveats to a (paraphrasing) quote:technically giving permission as long as it's not illegal or making money off it answer. If it's illegal, do I have rights? If you're making money, do I have rights? If I have rights in these and other matters, then the camera owner can be sued. That opens a whole bag of worms (not to be confused with lawyers). These questions need answers, but I don't work for Shell . don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on March 29, 2003 at 11:23 AM.]
  16. It is I whom hangs the mount straight down. Seems to work for me pretty well. Mounts. As for the suction cup replacement, they are replaceable (they weren't just molded in with the flange, ya know...). Just have to squeeze the new one through the hole. Since the old one is old, why worry--just cut the cup off with side-cutters. As for whether Magellan will sell us new cups...? don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on March 29, 2003 at 09:28 AM.]
  17. Do you have just Mapsend Streets, or Streets and Destinations USA? S&D USA gives you the option for saving to file, sending to GPS, or sending to card reader. don
  18. A recent article in a photography magazine addressed the legal (liability) aspects of publishing pictures and the requirement for obtaining a release from the subject(s). A self-portrait on a camera owned by someone else was not discussed, however. So I have a few thoughts. That you knowingly take your own picture might seem to imply permission, but does it really matter who pushes the shutter button? Secondly, if you are recognizable from the picture you take and the cache owner's use of the photo will be commercial--any use intended to promote a business interest--including web sites, looks like a model release would be needed. What happens if the owner sells or gives away the pictures and does not include any language on the restrictions of use? Can the owner sell them? Who owns the copyright on the picture--you or the camera owner? An argument could be made that you created the picture, not the owner. The image is your intellectual/artistic property. If a picture depicts someone doing something crazy, and the cache owner creates a caption calling the subject a klutz or jerk, it seems the owner might be liable for subjecting the person in the image to public ridicule. Hmmm. These are just ideas and questions I thought could use some airing. To the staff at Groundspeak: how did you handle the legal aspects for the images of the models you used on the main page? don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on March 29, 2003 at 08:42 AM.]
  19. If you have a good 35mm with quality lenses, another option would be to spend less money for an outstanding scanner with negative and slide adapter. While taking it out of a camera backpack is a little less convenient than pulling out a small digital from your pocket (along with waiting to get it developed), the options are improved when it comes to getting that perfect shot. Scan the media when developed and your ready to send the image anywhere. don
  20. Perhaps it's genetic for some. Those may be the same ones who drop their drawers and socks and leave them lay where they hit the floor.
  21. As Caching In and I noted, a clean windshield(inside, of course!) and clean cups with a little spittle or oil from the side of your nose brushed on them make a good seal. Mine have never come off when mounted as shown no matter how bad the car shakes, rattles, or rolls. don
  22. Looks can be deceiving. And as noted in the text, only the Pro sits there. They were side-by-side for the pictures only.
  23. Here are a few pics of my ST Pro and Meridian mounted high on the windshield, behind the mirror, under the roof(no moon roof). This is our normal travel position for the ST Pro; the Meridian usually sits next to the drivers side pillar, out of the way but easily reachable. My wife uses the Pro and rotates it in her direction. No problems EVER of receiving signal. As you can see, the sat lock is good on both, getting almost all sats that were available at the time. No WAAS yet as I had just turned them on after a few days being off. PS--Any anecdotal evidence of poor performance of the Magellan mount is probably due to improper mounting technique, like starting with a clean windshield. This is how the mount should be configured when possible, Magellan advertising pictures to the contrary. And there is nothing better than being able to instantly mount and dismount the GPSr's without having to jump through power connection hoops! It's automatic with these mounts. don
  24. I also had a similar problem with zlib. Not knowing what the heck it was all about, I just changed the zlib compression (recommended) to DOC compression. Works great, every time. don I also have the PalmIIIxe.
