  1. Oh, and if I do accomplish this and upload 2 .img files, will the gps display them at the same time or just switch between them?
  2. Dear Timpat: Thanks, I had a feeling that was the most I could hope for. A lot of my "tracks" in MapSource were manually added into MapSource point by point so those actual "tracks" are non-existant other than the image they then created since my hard drive was wiped. I still hope someone else can assist since this solution is bare minimum. What it means is that I won't be able to work with (edit) my old tracks in MapSource and re-digitize them which is what I really want. Dear Splashy: I'm not sure what you're saying here. I can't claim credit for figuring out how to make my own maps - I learned the process right here in a forum about a year and a half ago and I merely follow a set of directions I saved and use. I should clarify I don't make actual maps - I make transparent overlays with my tracks so they are permanent - they are laid over and uploaded with purchased topo maps from Garmin. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated guys.
  3. Timpat!!! Thanks for your response. Yes, I still have the maps loaded and working on my 60Csx, but that is the only place. As I remember it, MapSource combines all the selected maps into one file before uploading it onto the GPS. So, if I understand you correctly, this program you point to allows you to separate that single file into all the separate maps, and then...? I'm not sure what is supposed to happen after that. I'm assuming that I can continue to independantly upload my custom maps to my GPS. But on the downside, this does not actually convert the maps back to "editable" track files in mapSource, merely uploadable final maps?
  4. Help. Over the last couple years I've been creating my own transparent maps from MapSource-into mapedit into cgpsmapper to upload along side my Garmin TopoCanada maps onto both my 60Csx and Astro. The original data was a mix of tracks created with the gps as well as manually created tracks in MapSource using external data. Trajedy last fall had both my computer and backups all blank. All I have now are the maps I've created that were on the handheld units. If I recall correctly I need the original files since as soon as I upload new maps to the units the ones already on there will be gone and then all will be lost. Does anyone know a way to back-convert? I have probably a couple hundred hours of work invested I don't want to lose. Please help! Shawn
  5. I will definitely be getting one of these astros too - should be very similar to 60csx with different buttons. That "5 miles" by the way is line of sights - ie. best case on flat ground no obstructions (ie. trees) - you may want to count on maybe 1 mile in real life. If you get it please post your experiences with it.
  6. I've had a 60CSX for a year now, and I was kissing the ground when I figured out how to turn off the electronic compass. Don't waste your money. It only works when held perfectly horizontal, is away from any metal (far away), and is calibrated often. I use it on my quad often, and since it's in a holder that isn't horizontal, whenever you come to a stop, the arrow changes to show a wrong direction based on the compass (which isn't reading right cause not horizontal). Skip it. Good luck!
  7. HI Guys. Can someone who's already copied the new mapsource icons post them to a file so we can also use them? I'd like to avoid (actually I can't) downloading the new mapsource, but am dying for new hunting symbols and suck at drawing! Please ? Thanks.
  8. Hi. Anyone know the difference between these 2? Doesn't hitting 'Mark' button (60CSX) create a waypoint exactly at that location right away? Why would you need to press and hold 'Find'?
  9. Touch screens suck - especially in the great outdoors. 8 hour battery life?? ouch. Would hate to see what happens to the hard drive when you drop that thing. Not impressed.
  10. If you (generic) can use both systems, then why did that mars satellite crash because of a metric-english conversion error? haha Seriously though, most people haven't noticed, but the US is already well on its way to being metric, except for the speed limits! Heck, years ago the Chevy Corvette was designed and built in entirely metric units!! If that's not an American symbol, I don't know what is. It's sneaking in.... Just some facts,.. not trying to upset any diehards.
  11. Why useless and when is WAAS necessary? Sorry, I'm too much of a GPS rookie [2-weeks] to have yet formed an opinoin. Thanks Hermit ZR-mindless mindlessly neglected to mention that he doesn't live in the US. So, from his prespective, WAAS is of little use. However, if you do live in the US, where there are WAAS groundstations, then WAAS does become useful. True, sorry. I am in Canada and have found out waas doesn't work here. I stick to my other statement though!!!... just because it says batt-low, don't jump to change the batteries just yet!! (unless you can't watch it to see when it powers off and need the breadcrumbs to get home). Although, I have to ask those in the know - when I turn waas on, it often picks up the "waas" satellites (listed as #'s around 48-51??) and add's the D's under the other sat's strengths, which I though was a waas signal?? Does this sound right? In any case, whatever it is, it never helped my accuracy.
  12. I bought the 60CSX which includes the same compass, and to be honest, I'm not too pleased. Easily affected by surroundings and interference, it always wants you to hold it level, and it's very slow. Let's just say that I'm very happy I finally figured out how to turn it off! If you plan on using it on foot, then I say maybe, since it will be easy to hold it level, but it's not really worth the extra cash. The new units coming out this year (only astro so far) are claiming a new 3-D compass which you won't have to hold level - maybe that will be better..... Good luck
  13. My biggest advise is to ignore it when it tells you that the batts are low. Mine beeped about 4 weeks ago with low batts, and I just hit enter and got another 6-7 hours out of it (no exaggeration). Also, I feel WAAS is useless, so I'd only use that when necessary.
  14. All you guys that want smaller units must have really small fingers!!! I think the 60CSX is maybe a bit tall, but otherwise a decent size. If anything, I'd prefer a larger screen and 4 batteries for longer life. GOtta keep it rugged. I'd also like the new 3-D compass coming in the Astro, the compass in my 60CSX sucks quite frankly. Other than that, it could use a better joystick - this one isn't very responsive. Smaller is NOT better!! Mapsource could use some updating and the track features on the unit could make better use of the external card. Does anyone think Garmin is reading these???
  15. Tried this today for first time. Had to pay the $20 to Google Earth. The fish thing converter didn't work for me either, so I downloaded Babel and it works great. My only complaint is about the Google Earth process - I couldn't find a way to save more than one 'path' at a time - which means converting each one, then opening each one in Mapsource, send them individually to the GPS, then finally download them all from the GPS back into Mapsource to get them all in one file. If anyone knows a better way I'd love to hear it!!!
  16. I know it's early, but does anyone know what you LOSE by going to the Astro? I know you obviously gain the dog tracking and the 3-D compass (thank GOD). But I'm worried about what I lose. The pics show a lack of a usb port, yet it still has the micro sd card.... Thanks!
  17. Well - I'm not pilot, but I've had similar situations. While on my atv, I've had it shut off on my for no reason. I don't think there are any map edges in this area, but I use it a lot while driving long distances and never a problem with mapedges in other areas (of canada). But you know, it would be mighty interesting to note that my very old Eagle Explorer GPS did the same thing in this same area several times, which was the reason I finally lost faith in it and bought the 60csx!!!! Will do more research...
  18. Hey all. I want to say a big thankyou to everyone who contributed to this post. As I've mentioned in other posts, I was very dissapointed to see my new expensive 60CSX with data card could only store 20 tracks. I've tried this track to transparent map thing, and though it took 6 hours, it worked amazingly. I have yet to try changing the trails to different colours, but for now I'm happy. Thanks!
  19. Hi All. I have a new 60CSX and have a couple questions I can't get answered and haven't seen yet in any threads. 1) I now understand that tracks can only be transferred from the main memory to the data card - once they're there they can't be brought back and can't be seen without sending them to map source first. My question is HOW do you get them from the main memory to the card? Can you transfer an already saved track to the card, or just the current one? Or do all the currently visible main memory tracks get transfered to the data card as one track file? Please list steps. 2) If you have more than 20 tracks in map source, how do you choose which 20 to upload into the gps? So far it appears to just grab the first 20 with no choice. Please help!!
