  1. Jolly, Good for you - I'm still looking for a low priced ISP. Any suggestions for a number in the US? I guess it really doesn't matter where as I have free long distance and roaming, and free nights and weekends... My phone company has an option for $12.95 I could go with. Still debating. Anyone know of one that offers a free month trial so I could cancel if I'm not satisified with that option? Thanks! Mike
  2. Team GPSax: Actually my bug is doing pretty good so far (in the top ten). But what's the fun in watching a stalled bug for a *month*! I'm not so worried about winning, but I feel bad that these two are stuck in *my* cache! Oh well, there's an event coming up, maybe I can convince someone to come down and grab them... Thanks, Mike
  3. I'm going to have to second regoarrarr's motion on Mario's Tower... So far we've made approximately seven trips to the area (at a round trip of 50 miles a trip) and only logged four of the thirteen stages. We're planning on kidnapping regoarrarr at the next group meeting and torturing him until he gives up the next stage's coordinates.
  4. Well, here's an update (sort of)... I purchased the phone and for the longest time (and three computers later) I couldn't get it to connect to the computer, much less dial out. Just recently I've noticed that unless you have the battery almost fully charged, you're SOL. Now, the good thing is that the USB cable contains a socket for the power cord so I can use the cable and charge it at the same time. The next step will be to actually connect it to the laptop and use a dial-up service. (Still working on finding a relatively cheap one). Team BVCY Swim has a pretty cool setup, which is where I got the idea. Pretty soon though I'm going to need a small power plant in addition to the van's engine. Currently we have (off and on) a laptop, the gps, and a cell phone charger for my wife's phone. We contemplated getting one of these travel kits w/ the tv and vcr, but I'm fairly certain that if I do that, turn on the lights and the A/C that I'll be getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 miles to the gallon. Ah well, next update: ISP and quality of connection. -Mike from Team Mixster
  5. quote:Originally posted by Navdog:Not sure who to be upset with on situations like this, the cacher who is ignorant enough to walk through it or the cache placer who is ignorant enough to place a cache in an area that has poison ivy/poison oak and not mention it on the cache page. I feel silly sometimes listing all the warnings on my cache pages about various hazards and I sometimes think the terrain ratings are a point too high, but I would rather have less visitors to one of my caches than have someone who is not use to wandering in the wilds get into trouble. I too agree, but I'm one of those that placed my caches in the winter or early spring and couldn't tell. In this area (Northern KY and Greater Cincinnati) I have yet to come across a cache in the woods that didn't have *some* sort of poison ivy growing along the trail or in the woods. We keep a container of antiseptic wipes (looks like baby wipes) and we use on hands/arms when we're afraid we've come in contact. So far, so good. -Mike from Team Mixster
  6. When I first started it was just me and one (or both) of the kids. It was a nice way for my wife to have quiet time. At that point I logged them as Mixster. Now, she runs the laptop, she runs the GPS, she uses the compass and I... um, log their finds? j/k - I really don't think it matters as I don't really see it as a competition to get the biggest numbers, but I like LadyBuggers' approach - you can't split your team up, expect for fanning out to look for the same cache at the same time. Either way, it's a hobby, a relaxing pastime. In through the nose, out through the mouth. (Don't eat the bugs, and don't let them eat you). -Mike from TEAM Mixster
  7. Even though my bug is doing fairly well, I'm considering disqualifying myself to get these two tortoise's back on track. They've been sitting in my cache for over a month now w/o moving... If I do, it'll probably be to bring them to the TriState Cacher's meeting in Springdale, OH on 6/12 so if someone can grab them and move them before then, great. If not, it'll *seem* like a move backwards, but in the hands of DLiming, LadyBuggers, or regoarrarr, trust me, they'll make the state line in no time! -Mike from Team Mixster
  8. Sort of from Ohio... Just South of Cinci in Covington, KY. Although I've found I'm spending most of my caching time floating around the Cincinnati area. Greetings from Team Mixster!
  9. Whoops, spoke too soon. Found my answer in the Cincinnati group thread. Answers: Somewhere in Springdale June 12th, 2003 7:00PM to whenever Yahoo group formed for discussions. -Mike
  10. Junglehair, Hope you're on vacation - but thanks for the update. My apologies on not keeping my stats page up, I just couldn't keep up with it (and I was doing it manually) However, this is a perfect time for a sneak attack... No map updates for a week or so. Hmm... Let's see what happens. -Mike from Team Mixster
  11. Ladybuggers, Since we bugged out when the younger members got waterlogged we weren't around for the organization talks. Is the meeting at the same place as the one for the CITO event on 6/12 at 7:00? Depending on location we'll probably make it, with such a huge turnout when it rains, imagine what it'll be like for an indoors event. -Mike from Team Mixster
  12. I didn't want to disqualify myself, otherwise I would have moved Tilly and Toby a little closer to Web-ling's route. Sorry... I did contact Electric Shavers to see if they could bounce down this way. Tomorrow is our CITO event at Mt. Airy forest in Cincinnati. Over 60 cachers have signed up, so I'll bring up the fact that they were missed and see if someone will help them along. Meanwhile I'm wiring Web-ling a little cash... (J/K - it's all about the race at this point) Great thanks to all who've helped. I think the popularity of this race has kept this bug the only one of mine that seems to still be active. Take care all! -Mike from Team Mixster
  13. Based on what everyone has said here and research I've done on my own I went with an Ericsson T68i phone with service through T-Mobile. I've also ordered the USB data cable. As far as I know I should be able to use this to have it setup as an external modem. Now I just need an ISP. (My cablemodem doesn't offer a dial-up alternative, so there's an added fee). I'll let you know what my progress is as I get it as I really want this to work out. Also, Team BVCY Swim will be at the Mt. Airy Forest Cleanup CITO event tomorrow so I'll check out thier setup and see what I can learn. Thanks! -Mike from Team Mixster
  14. So it's my understanding that as long as you have a cell phone that supports it and a digital network, it basically acts as a modem and you *still* have to have dial-up internet service in order to access. Is that right? I liked T-mobile's Sidekick plan, except that I guess the data limit shouldn't matter - only minutes right? -Still somewhat confused: Mike
  15. Hey folks, If I want to connect my laptop to the internet what are my options for using a cell phone (or cell phone network) to do so? I don't care to surf on my phone, basically I'm looking for a cellular modem I guess... Any suggestions on where to research this? Thanks, Mike from Team Mixster
  16. I use the plastic grocery bags that I save from shopping. That way you are recyling the pags as well. team mixster
  17. Man, this bug is just down the road... I'd further it along, but alas I'm banned from touching it... Fairly decent easy-to-get to cache though. If I were of an evil mind I'd ask some fellow cachers to help move it East, but ah, where's the fun in that? -Mixster
  18. Here's the family practicing for the upcoming Cincinnati Tri-State cachers cleanup... -Team Mixster
  19. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=63121 GCF691 Has the question of what comes after 'GC' already been answered? -Mixster
  20. Well, I hid my fifth yesterday and the waypoint was GCEE9E, so we're getting close... Here it is: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=61086
  21. So you'd be one of the few that understands the significance of 'Florence Y'all!' I show people from home a picture (they live near Lansing, MI) and they just roll their eyes... If you're down on May 3rd, we're organizing to do a Cincinnati area park clean-up, and could probably talk more about a group then... -Mixster
  22. Hmm, I like the Tri-State Caching Club. You know, we should probably just get something started like a Yahoo Forum or something to begin with, and any decisions to be made, or meetings could be through there... The other question is, how many tri-state cachers are reading the forums?
  23. Hmm... Forum bug was super hungry today. But the new look and feel is pretty neat. After a wonderful dinner with Cincinnati area Geocachers, I've come back to my duty and updated the map... Now, can someone please help Cannonball Road Rescue get out of NY? (preferably West...) http://home.insightbb.com/~mmick1/cannonballrun.htm
  24. After meeting everyone last night, I'm seriously considering putting something together. My biggest fear though is that work (unfortunately) comes first so if I get bogged down I don't want to slow anyone else down. First we need a name - any ideas? GeoCinners? -Team Mixster
  25. Just came from a great meeting of local cachers in Cincy area, and we're in. Looks like May 3rd will be the day, and LadyBuggers will be coordinating for all those interested. (Nice meeting everyone tonight as well!!) -Team Mixster
