  1. Hi, mamoreb! Thanks for this kind post. According to some online English-Danish dictionaries, I think an equivalent word in english is "generous." I just like seeing my coins travel, and think others would enjoy it as well. Not only that, there are that many more coins for other geocachers to discover or move! It's a win-win.
  2. And that's a wrap! 20 coins offered, and 20 coins have been adopted out! To the new recipients, please verify that the coin's mission is accurate to get to you (or to wherever you'd like it to go). Once you accept the adoption request, you will be able to edit or add to the coin's page as you like. Please make adjustments for the coin's destination as soon as possible, because I will be making an information sheet to go with each one. Please contact me if you have questions. I will try to place everyone's coin in a cache over the next two weeks, but please have patience! There are many coins to get moving and there aren't always coin-sized caches to place them in. 1. dufzor - adoption complete 2. munozfamily2004 - adoption complete 3. wuster - adoption complete 4. town$ca$h - adoption complete 5. 3. Sign-up: 21 February 2011 Name received: 21 March 2011 Package sent: Package received: Yes! Sometime prior to April 1st... Thank you, thank you, thank you to Maine Guy of Maine Family, and a Happy Easter indeed! I've been away from the forums for a bit for a little R&R in one of our nation's treasures (i.e, national park). When I returned, a large package was waiting for me with some even larger prizes inside! I've taken a picture for all to see, and I'm extremely happy with EVERYTHING. Note that there was also a Cadbury Creme Egg inside, but it quickly made its way into my belly. The effects of a week of camping and hiking, I suppose. Mine will be mailed out on Monday...
  4. Congratulations, redwingrr! and what a PURRfectly fabulous prize that is, too! My pride of felines were hoping to add it to their ranks, but they will have to take comfort in themselves!

  6. Really? :~/ Ok... I guess somebody misunderstood my meaning of the air quotes around the word free. This is to imply that the coins aren't really free. Sometimes there is intent and emotion lost in the written word. I think we are on the same page, but separated by a common written language. When I first read your post, my focus was on the "Pay it forward" portion in more direct terms of basic sentence structure: you were specifying the title of something, similarly to an article or other short written work. Can you tell I've been spending time with MLA?! And the "free" in quotes simply quoting the OP. I guess there's more ambiguity with quotation marks in writing. In face-to-face conversation, air-quotes are obvious in their intent/meaning, and we'd all continue on without such mishaps. All good. So, that's our writing lesson for today. Who says you can't get something for nothing?!
  7. Really? :~/ There is a purpose to the "Pay It Forward" mission thread. That purpose is to get coins in caches and moving by adopting over one of your "extra" coins to someone who wants to see one travel. The goal is that these people who receive adopted coins will remember the gesture and pay it forward by adopting over one of their coins to someone else, and so on and so forth. Granted it's more of an honor system than a requirement to "pay it forward," and I'm not naive enough to believe that no one who posts in the "Pay It Forward" thread views it as a "free coin" deal. After all, there are few "regulars" in the geocoin forums who have referred friends to the "Pay It Forward" thread, rather than offering up one of their extras. I'm not bitter - honestly. However, it is not titled the "Free Coin" mission for good reason. The whole spirit of that thread is to spread generosity and the joy of trackables, not so people could get something for nothing.
  8. Updating the list with the latest requests. I am away from my coins at the moment, but I will send out adoption notices on Friday. 9. @Wylymama24 - You've accepted the adoption, so all it good! I do have a good number of coins to get started, so it might take me a couple of days till yours gets placed. You'll know when your coin begins to move! @TrynaFindaCache - I've included the very first post in this thread. The "point" of this mission is to get coins moving through caches and geocachers. Many of us who have been interested in coins for a while have "extra" coins, which are just sitting around in a box. The mission is a win-win in that extra coins are no longer lying around because they've been activated and adopted over to those who want to watch a trackable. All of the coins I've adopted out in this mission are new, never been activated, first-time traveling coins. Adopting an already moving coin to someone gives them a trackable, for sure, but doesn't really support the other intent of the mission: get coins into caches. Just my opinion, but please read Tennessee Jed's post and formulate your own thoughts as to what the intent is/was and how you can contribute to it, if at all! Safe travels!
  10. I can only speak for the coins I'm willing to activate and adopt out. I am limiting mine to one coin per cacher, because it's about the gesture, about getting coins into the world, and about believing in this mission enough to do the same for someone else. It's not a "rule" per se, but that's how I'm operating! If you really like geocoins and like to watch them travel, there are some very reasonably priced coins available right now at some of the approved vendors. The list of approved vendors is HERE. Scroll to the bottom and click on the "Geocoin Manufacturers and Resellers" website. The coin is YOURS to do with as you like. If it arrives to you, you can keep it as part of your collection. If it arrives to you, you can change the mission and send it back out into the world to gather more miles. You can change the mission for it to go somewhere else right now, although the piece of paper with it will still have the old mission! Or, you can adopt it over right now if you want - totally up to you.

  12. I posted a "suggestion" in the feedback forums. For new cachers in particular, there is SO MUCH terminology associated with geocaching and trackables: found it, grabbed it, write a note, discovered it. And then, if you want to drop a trackable off OR let it visit, your choices don't correspond with the history of the coin. For example, after visiting a cache with your trackable, you have two options: "dropped off" or "visited." If you select "dropped off," the coin's page shows that you "placed" it in the cache. If you select "visited," the coin's page shows that you "took it to." This can be confusing, especially for a new cacher. In the spirit of being part of the solution, I tried to think of what could make managing trackables easier for new cachers, the numbers of which are increasing thanks very much to apps. My suggestion, and you can read and vote on it HERE, is that these options be more in line with what appears on the coin's page, a streamlining of terminology. This won't prevent thieves or mishaps of seasoned cachers, but it may help with common mistakes of new cachers who think that writing "picked up a coin" in their log will let the world know they have the trackable. I don't know if gc.com is calculating statistics on how many new cachers register with their smart phones, or if the rate of new cachers is on the rise. However, I'd be willing to bet that the number of new, week-long, fair-weather cachers is on the rise, such that there are more people finding their first cache than seasoned cachers to run into. Me personally, when I introduce people to geocaching, I strongly suggest that they NOT pick up a TB or geocoin until they have more than a few caches under their belt. Geocaching is cool in a group and in small doses - not everyone gets the fever! There IS a certain amount of responsibility associated with TBs and coins, and someone who doesn't yet feel like their part of the community may not appreciate that someone is really interested in watching that TB or coin.
  13. *gasp* That's a new one for me, and I like it! Does it glow? Oh, the thought of it is lovely...
  14. My third and final post will address number 3: what type of coin I would like to see minted. (Man, I like rules!) I would like to see a coin that depicts the genetic relationships between all organisms, like a "tree of life" kind of thing. This is very similar to a family tree that you might put together to trace your heritage, except it spans geologic time. It does occur to me that this is kind of boring to most people, but I think it could relate to geocaching and geocachers fairly easily. Most of us were introduced to geocaching by someone or something. For me, I saw an ad in Backpacker magazine for the Jeep TB contest, the green jeeps. That was in 2006, and that's when I found my first cache: while retrieving one of these green jeeps. A coin depicting how people are "related" to geocaching might be interesting. The relationships could include: introduced by a friend introduced by Jeep TBs happened upon a cache by accident downloaded an app naturally geeky These trees can be very simple: These trees can look like a tree: Recently, these trees have become VERY complex and circular: In my humble opinion, the opportunities for translating this concept into a coin are endless! Thanks for the cointest!
  15. This would be a suggestion for the feedback pages. For this thread, we should stick what is actually in place at this time, but feel free to suggest this in Feedback. Thanks, Eartha! I posted my suggestion there. If anyone feels the same way, please give it some votes: LINK
  16. I have a suggestion. First off, let me say that I really like that I can log my placement of a trackable item in a cache at the same time as logging the find - brilliant! However, it occurs to me today, after responding to an email from a new geocacher about how to log her geocoin find, that there might be room for improvement. The options for trackable items are "Visited" and "Dropped Off." Observation #1: To some people, both of these sound temporary. Suggestion #1: Keep "Visited" and add "Placed In" or "Left" or something that sounds more permanent. Observation #2: To a new cacher wanting to PLACE a TB/coin, they don't see a direct link between what is on the trackable's page and the options provided. For example... When one selects the "visited" option, the trackable item's page reads "<Cacher's Name> took it to <Cache's Name>" When one selects the "dropped off" option, the trackable item's page reads "<Cacher's Name> placed it in <Cache's Name>" Why the difference? If we are trying to make things easier, then there should be more consistency in our terminology. When I was trying to explain to the new cacher how to place a trackable in a cache, my instructions were "Select the 'Dropped Off' option." Suggestion #2: Same as suggestion #1, but now the reason is consistency rather than "dropped off" sounds temporary. In short, I think "Dropped Off" should be changed to "Placed". Just a thought...
  17. This might be my first coin purchase for 2011. I think my favorite is the back of the coin with the layout of the city...very mythological.
  18. Second post, and I'll address #2: a theme around which I collect. I enjoy coins that feature nature and the organisms within it. While I really "geek out" on coins that have some biology with them, I have been known to appreciate artistic or fantastic renderings of nature. How does one put biology/science into a coin? Including the scientific name of an organism, or providing some natural history about the animal/place featured on the coin, like some of the national park coins. The artistic/fantastic interpretations that I've appreciated are the turtle and hopper coins by tsunrisebey, the fantasy butterfly coins that came out a while ago (I forget the cacher's name - sorry!), the rampant le chat's, and I'm sure there will be more going forward! Although I appreciate pretty colors and shapes as much as the next guy, I like science, research, and education also and really appreciate when coins meld the two: fun AND true.
  19. Nice cointest, Anne! I've been visiting and participating in these forums for over three years now, and at times I've forgotten how/why I ever became interested in geocoins. The first part of this cointest has reminded me of what I really like about coins. My favorite coin is the Belted Kingfisher, which I believe is a personal coin by a geocaching team in Europe? I was lucky enough to be offered one in response to a trade request, and thank goodness I had something worthy to trade for it! This coin is my favorite because it has elements I appreciate: - excellent detail in the metal part - use of the scientific name for the species, even if it is in all caps - breathtaking, without being flashy (this is my very biased opinion, of course) PS: If anyone has any of these to trade, there were several metals minted and I would love to get my grubby fingers on more than one.
  20. Once you accept your adopted coin, please verify that the coin's mission is to travel to your home location. If it's incorrect, please let me know through my gc.com profile. 21. Working on the most recent adoption requests! Coins have been selected...I am working on uploading photos for the coins' pages so the new owners can see what should be heading their way. To those of you who have requested a coin, please make sure your profile is updated with your home location so I can set that coin's mission to travel to you. Once you accept the adoption request (will come later on today!), you can edit the pages as you like. 22. 11: the cacher's dozen hmmmm Was trying to play of two other dozens: 12, the world's dozen, and 13, a baker's dozen If anything, cachers would want 14 to be their dozen, because it's all about the numbers, right?
  23. I'm in for the awesome cointest! Sending email...
  24. New page - BUMP! I am seeking the "Sunshine" version of the Sunshine. Freedom. Flower. geocoins. Does anyone have an extra for trade?
