  1. HI,You know everyone has their favorite gps.Mine is an trimble Ranger3L.I seldom get to use it because my grandchildren hike in Yellowstone National Park, alot. There ,you need an no nonsense gps that you can trust with your life.Geocaching really does not require anything much.I would say,any Delorme or Garmin and they don't need all the bells and whistles.Remember, geocaching is for the hunting fun and would be no fun for anyone to just walk right up on top of an cache. If you have little children get them an geomate jr.The older one an Delorme or Garmin etrex model.
  2. I was just going through the new Garmin 600 series videos and I noticed an lot of borrowed ideas.Adjusting topo and aerial zoom levels[Delorme],Larger screen[bushnell 350-400],Lithium ion battery pack[bushnell 350-400],There are several other things Bushnell and Delorme have had for years.I would think after all these years someone would come out with an gps powered by an 9 volt battery,an faster processer, instead of REINVENTING at an HEFTY price tag.
  3. I have been having the same problem for awhile, now. Here is what I do. I make an desktop folder for loc files. Next download caches to this folder.Open Delorme topo,Go to draw files,,,,import.Go to desktop folder and import caches,Open exchange and send them to ,card,or internal.
  4. I ran across this news article ,today. http://www.baynews9.com/article/news/ap/july/280098/New-GPS-satellite-launched-into-space ,I was wondering which gps is capable of receiving signals from it. It is supposed to be super accurate and for the public as well as the military??
  5. I have come to the conclusion that every time Groundspeak says it is updating site, they mess something up.Use GSAK or Delorme topo and download the LOC files, than transfer to Delorme gps.I have an desktop folder named "cache locs".I put the caches in it and open them through topo 8 file,,import.............. Than use handheld exchange to put them on either sd card or internal.
  6. Everything was fine a few days ago, now, even with the delorme plugin enabled Groundspeak says it cannot find it.I'm running explorer 9 and vista.I can go the long route and get the caches by downloading loc file and bring them into topo 8,than transfering them to pn20.Any suggestions???

  8. Where and how would an person make coords changes to his or her cache? On clear days my coords read different{not much},than over cast ones. My gps is more accurate on those clear days.
  9. Well if it's any consolation, the same thing happened to me,but, with tomtom. It always showed my map was up to date, but,I knew it wasn't.The catch is that you must have the latest version of map to continue with map updates. Now,to magellan,,They sent me an sd card with updated map ,no, questions asked. They all are good gps's,but, customer care is where they differ.
  10. I was wondering,if, I can pick which poi,s show up on the map?? If I wanted just banks to show, how do I do this?
  11. I just loaded united states red light cameras from Trapster and they worked fine into the 295w.They are found in Extras.
  12. I own an tomtom,3garmins and 1 magellan more or less designed for auto use and none of them will do this.It seems to me if you are traveling in unknown areas that all auto gps's should do this, not just a few like you found one. This is discouraging to have city pop up first ,when you don't know the city name, but, know the street. Many thanks for your answer.UPDATE,,I found my garmin nuvi 295w has the "search all cities"option.
  13. I was wondering if there is an gps out there that you can put in the address without knowing the city and from your present location it would give back, say within 25 miles the results of listed streets within that area ??????????
  14. I purchased the stereo earphone adaptor for it.ebay 1.96 free shipping,It really is loud, really loud.
  15. If you're set on a nuvi, but don't need the WiFi / email features, you may do better with the nuvi 500. I'm noticing the Nuvi 295W is being sold incredibly cheap now, ~$130 CDN! That's not bad at all considering it has text-to-speech navigation, and a tri-axis compass which is something the Nuvi 500/550 is lacking. The battery life sucks, but at least the windshield mount has a built-in power connector so there's no fiddling with a cable when clamping it into the holder. About the biggest drawback of the 295W to me is it's not very robust.. other than that I'm liking it better than the 500/550. You can get an battery pack for it,that should extend life for those long hikes,It's sold on ebay.
  16. Go to Garmin, sign in, Go to downloads, maps, extras, there is an Garmin program that loads caches direct to gps.I think it says geocache.
  17. Yes,it records tracks and can be reviewed in mapsource
  18. Here's a landscape shot. And yes, it does record tracks. You can review them in mapsource

  20. I've been fiddling with this combo option and I seem to notice, if I create a GSAK/Nuvi file that contains less than 500 caches "I think" I should be able to load the same file both as a POI loader and drag the .gpx file to the /Garmin/GPX folder. But when I try this the Nuvi doesn't seem to detect the dragged over file.. Can anyone else confirm this? I think what is happening is, the GSAK/Nuvi macro is outputting a .gpx file in the older 1.0 format, and the Nuvi needs a 1.1 format or it is not visible in the favorites section? For geocaches, there is an Garmin cache loader on their site,5 a day is the limit to download from map directly to your Garmin device.
  21. 60 days, I think it was. I have an question..When you update the map to the 2011 version and go to 'mapsource" is it supposed to show up?If so where is it and how do I get it to show? No, it doesn't show up in Mapsource at all. If you have your 295W connected to the computer, and you use BaseCamp, it sees the version installed on the gps. This map update is never installed on the computer. When I updated my maps, I had the option to install to my device and to my computer. 2011.3 does show in Mapsource. Interesting - I was never offered the option. Maybe I should go an download the map update again and see if I can install to the computer as well. Garmin gives you a year to download the file as often as you want. Sure enough, went back and just chose'to computer',Now ,I have 2011 map in mapsource. Thanks,,Guys
