  1. How much does it cost for a license from the FCC?
  2. Yeah, it is out of warranty. Thanks everyone for your help. I contacted garmin tech support via their website, we'll see what they say.
  3. Okay thanks, I tried squeezing it when it shut down, but that didn't do anything. Any other suggestions? I'm willing to try them!
  4. No, it's not set to do that. I don't know where that setting would be, but I've been using it for several months with no problem. Then the other day while en route to a cache, it shut down. It'd been working fine all day up to that point. So, thinking the batteries were dead, I took fresh ones out of my backpack and tried them, same problem. So later, back in the car and plugged into the lighter, same problem.
  5. My garmin venture has started this thing where when I turn it on, it shuts itself off. Sometimes it's within a few seconds, sometimes it's a minute or two. But it won't stay on. I replaced the batteries and it still does it. In fact, it does it even when plugged in to the cigarette lighter. Someone said I need to "reset" it, but how do I do this?
  6. Here is the link for the story online... http://www.presscitizen-shopper.com/Urbandale/story/109202003_urb4.asp
  7. Congratulations to the kid from Urbandale Middle School who won $5,000 for the school to use for purchase of a new Industrial Technology module on GPS tracking!! The article in the Press Citizen says "thanks to Anthony Houge, Urbandale Middle School students will have the chance to learn all about the technology and many uses of Global Positioning Systems" I don't know if the kid is a geocacher or not, but if not, maybe he will soon become one?!?!
  8. quote:fly46 My best reason to GeoCache is that it gives me reason to get off my butt and go do something! Like, I hate walking because walking in a circle seems pointless, but when you Cache, you have a reason to get up off your butt and move around! This sounds good, but what seems hilarious to me is that while walking in a circle seems pointless, that is what usually happens to me when I'm looking for a cache. I end up walking in circles! hehehe
  9. I always have logged my cache finds in the order I found them, but they don't always stay that way. A couple weeks ago I found one on my lunchbreak, logged it online when I got back to work. Then after work found another and logged it that night. But in my list, the 1st find for that day is nearest the top. I wonder why? Not that it really matters in the end. I do like to see time, as some have already mentioned, so IF I remember when logging a find, I'll put what time I found it, too.
  10. quote:ExactlyArmy,This is not really a "hehehe" topic, my friend. I'm guessing you're actually a nice person who wouldn't really hide food and make hungry people look for it. Worldtraveler Ah, I suppose I'm glad I come across as "actually a nice person". :-) And I think that you wouldn't really have to MAKE hungry people look for food. Speaking for myself, when I'm hungry, nobody has to make me look, I do that willingly. I also insert humor into every kind of situation, every day of my life. Ocasionally at inapropriate times. Keeps me from getting too stressed out in this crazy world we live in. hehehehehehehe
  11. Or how about this... to help out those who need food and a GPS. We do some allowing of food in caches. Then we buy hungry people a GPS, and let them find their food. hehehe
  12. quote:4) The shortest path is not always the best path I agree! I had to learn this the hard way and then the next time... well, you'dve thought I would've learned it the first time, but sometimes it takes more than once to get something through my head.
  13. I don't know why, but mine does that too. I have an eTrex Venture, and it has played with my mind several times now. I will be nearing a cache.. getting within 20 feet or so. Then it tells me "Hey you need to go 70 feet that way -->" I think 70 feet seems odd, but okay I'll go. I get about 20 feet that way and it says "hey sucker gotcha again. Now you need to go 10-15 feet back exactly the way you came from. I was only joking about the 70 feet hahahahhaha". It's as if I can hear the thing laughing and maybe that's just it's way of enjoying geocaching since it never brings anything to trade. (Is it anything to be alarmed about if I'm talking as if my GPS is not an inanimate object?)
  14. quote:I quit 1 year, 11 months, 1 week and 1 day ago! To all of you, congrats on quitting!
  15. When you try to read the GPS version do you get an error? What happens if you try to test the serial connection (under GPS)? You can check at this website Easy GPS support and might find what you need. It seems to work just fine for me and my etrex venture, so I'm not sure what's wrong. I guess check all the connections and the serial port, etc. [This message was edited by ExactlyAmy on March 10, 2003 at 08:50 PM.]
  16. I work in the office of a Lawn Care company, in my 5th year of that. Though I went ahead and got myself certified this year to be a licensed applicator. So we'll see what this year holds for me, will it be all office work, or some field work too?
  17. quote: I attempted to post a "one time only" cache only to be shot down by King Jeremy. I looked at the FAQ and it said that variations of the game were encouraged, but still Jeremy would not allow a one time only cache. He says the logistics are flawed. I argued that this variation would be like a "Geo-race", that the first geocacher that found it could rehide it and repost the new coords. He added that "one time caches" are off limits. Hey Bender, if that is what you are going for, you might be interested in www.geodashing.org which plays it like a game where first finder is the one that gets points or something. I don't know too much detail about it, as I prefer the "traditional" type myself. I have also heard of something like a race called Minute-Wars, but I don't have any info about it.

  19. quote:If you look under accessories in you programs and find system tools you should see the file "character map" it's in there. I know there is a short cut but I'm having a brain fart right now and can't remember it LOL! quote: I looked under accessories -> system tools, but I don't have character map! Is there somewhere I can get it?
  20. I thought it looked like the Karate Kid getting ready to do that one kick that you do when one leg is hurt.
  21. I'm gonna try to insert a link for the first time. Event link
  22. February 8 or 22 either one would work for me, if it's 1:30 or 2, or later. I am a newbie, a happy owner of an eTrex Venture, and I think maybe I could get another person or two to come with me. I'll let you know for sure ASAP. Thanks!!
  23. So if you cache with clothes ON, do you still get to count it as a find??? Seriously, though, if you put it in the title or description then it should be clear enough that if someone wants not to 'risk' seeing something they don't want to, then they can choose not to go for that one. If they don't feel their children are ready for that, then they can choose to go without the kids for that one. Then there won't be any surprises.
  24. Thanks everyone! Just purchased a Garmin Venture (came with the cable). I do think I will follow graveseekers suggestion and take a couple weeks and get to know my GPS before I just download. I'm glad to be able to download though, too.
