  1. It won't give you all the possibilities, but I've wanted the same functionality and used Google... Just include "site:www.geocaching.com" in Google, but not all cache pages come up. hth, Randy
  2. Windows XP has built-in batch resizing and rotation (if you've installed Powertools). The reason to resize before uploading is both quality and transfer speed... hth, Randy
  3. "TLC" "Random Act of Kindness" "Good Samaritan" "Aid" "Cache Assist" "Visitor Maintenance" (since the other is "Owner Maintenance") "Upkeep" "Touch up" Those are my brainstorms, I like TLC best but don't know if it's universal. The first three are sorta' encouraging whereas the rest rather dry (and the last sorta' insulting...) hth, Randy
  4. Just a follow-up of my earlier post (from our reviewer): fyi, Randy
  5. I just had a weird situation, listed a new offset cache with the final coords marked as viewable by administrators/owner only. I even labelled it "Admin" and it was flagged as "Final", but the local reviewer just posted: I asked if they were unable to see the final coords in the page when I replied with 'em, but just wanted to note it here (or maybe they don't read the Announcements!?) If they let me know I'll let you know... Enjoy, Randy
  6. Here in CT, batteries are one of the best trade items that go quickly. Never seen any burst, but it's obviously never hot enough. I believe Varta batteries are environmentally friendly if that's a concern (as if the plastic container wasn't worse!) Brand name batteries are less likely to have issues. Refridgerating batteries helps slow the chemical reaction so they last longer... I think we should ban logbooks, as children could get paper cuts and the spiral wire could be unwound and used as a garrote or to pick handcuffs! (Don't even get me started on pens/pencils and plastic bags which can choke children!) Heh, Randy
  7. So here's a question, if posting a "Needs Maintenance" log adds an attribute, what happens when a cacher other than owner rectifies the problem? (Particularly if the cache was adopted and owner defunct?) Alternatively when cache owners fix it without logging such virtually? Are PQ users who filter out such just denied then? Or does the "Needs Maintenance" attribute expire in some other fashion? Just thinking, Randy
  8. Great job as always, looks like the 8:30 fix did it (I, for one, do read the announcements)! Kudos and much appreciation, Randy
  9. I hadn't read this thread regarding local issues, as it was immediately hijacked and moved here, until it was brought to my attention today... I can't comment on any non-local issues that I'm ignorant about. It seems to me now that a couple individuals are just attacking a certain individual. It also seems that those making accusations are perhaps making assumptions about anothers behaviour, here's the original picture: I was there when this picture was made, driving by at an obviously legal 79 MPH. And I have the tracklog to prove it! (No, wait, I just wrote it up in a text editor...) Even better, let's make that 104 MPH... (Or should I make it 114 MPH to be more believable?) As for the off-topic direction this has gone in, the simple solution is to encourage MORE creative logs so people DON'T assume the hyperbole they read is accurate. If only 5% is exaggerated then folks won't get it, like hearing a crude joke during a eulogy (an eulogy?). If more is hyperbole, then the questionable content is more likely to be perceived as what it is. (Nevermind lost and buried amongst lotsa' other reading perhaps complimenting the land/property!) Heh, Randy
  10. With JS turned off, I see this on the regular cache page now: If I click decrypt, I just see one line "In plain sight." On a multiline hint, the lines are interlaced (first encrypted, then first decrypted, second encrypted, decrypted, etc.) hth, Randy
  11. There have been a couple criticisms lately of certain material included in logs (in a couple different threads and both email and phone conversations). The concern I guess is that the public will read such and presume that one persons writings are examples of ALL geocachers behaviours?!?? I object to this! (For multiple reasons...) The primary of which is logs are an expression of appreciation for the geocache. Restricting the flavor and juicy elements limits all logs to the lousy extreme of "TNLNSL". Which has become WAY too dominant for my taste (yeesh, 10 of them in my inbox just today). Heck, the best logs known in the community are complete works of fiction! Having NOTHING to do with the cache itself. The writer has expressed numerous illegal acts, including (but not limited to), drunk driving, underage girls, public nudity among other nefarious humors. He was even featured in the magazine! So please let's not "crack down" on the artistic expression of some cachers, but instead applaud their contributions and efforts! I know some spend a LOT of time juicing up their logs (rather than the babble that comes out of my fingers). The public generally knows that just because a newspaper prints it doesn't make it true, and even more so for what you read on the web. Any reasonable adult knows what one persons claims doesn't represent how all people behave. Heck, as evidenced by the jeep contest, doctoring photos is commonplace too. Let's encourage good logging with lots of creativity and pleasure rather than adopting Orwellian tactics please. IMO this should be a pleasant hobby that expands ourselves, not an unpleasant restrictive environment. Thanks, Randy
  12. Not so bad displayed there, painful in a fixed-width font! --Randy
  13. But then in a simple GPSr, you'd have this for caches GC0000, GC080B, GC0880, GC8B0B: GC0000 GC080B GC0880 GC8B0B P10000 P1B088 M1080B M10880 M18B0B M2080B M20880 M28B0B M3080B M38B0B My idea would keep same cache waypoints sorted together, rather than sprinkling them throughout the list as so: GC0000 GC080B GC0880 GC8B0B P00001 PB0881 M080B1 M080B2 M080B3 M08801 M08802 M8B0B1 M8B0B2 M8B0B3 Now imagine if there were more than just three multicache waypoint sets loaded!?!! (This also solves the problem of using both characters as a suffix creating possible dupes.) Just a thought, Randy
  14. How 'bout comparing to a GPS-verified Benchmark? Enjoy, Randy
  15. Most night caches around here use both "24/7" & "Recommended" attributes on their night caches (and I did on mine). I defined mine as "unknown" but have seen 'em as "multi" or even "traditional"!?!! But isn't the practical application to be able to search out caches so described? Standards allow the computer to do the work automagically rather than users to read manually. A manual alternative is for someone to maintain a Bookmark list of night caches in your area (as thankfully has been done in mine). Unfortunately that relies on someone bringing a new one to his attention. (You can also try using Google to search for "Night Cache" in your state but I found results limited.) hth, Randy
  16. Scary, but how about a hybrid solution, both single-digit prefix and suffix? GC#### stays as is. P####1 = parking option 1 P####2 = cheater parking P####3 = winter parking M####1 = multistage M####2 = multistage X####1 = misc view along way X####1 = neaby benchmark/letterbox/cool tree etc... Would be a bit more tough for 3rd party apps to parse but sorts nicely in a GPSr natively and no dupes that I see. hth, Randy
  17. Hmm.. Interesting... Not exactly tagging per se but how 'bout simply using Google? Fall foliage or colors "tags" in Connecticut Snowshoes "tag" in CT Waterfall "tagged" caches in CT If you specify "site:www.geocaching.com/seek" in Google, it'll just return cache pages. Now we just need users to standardize their tags--good luck with that! Hehe, Randy PS: As I pulled up snow-friendly night caches ("recommended at night" "available in winter") I learned Google only has a tenth of the caches... 173 of CT's 1187...
  18. The 125kb (or even 125,000 bytes) I've found to be optimistic, I tend to keep 'em closer to 100k to avoid running into trouble. They are resized on a case-by-case basis. If it gets resized, you can delete it and/or upload a new smaller version. IE, your actions on one image won't affect any other. These are just my experiences however, to be countermanded by those in the know! hth, Randy
  19. OK, this if now apparently off topic but as I was sending a "Welcome to geocaching" note to a newbie today I was reminded of this thread. Whenever I see a caching handle I don't recognize log with a "1" find count I send them a "Hi, noticed you found X today and wanted to welcome you to this fun hobby..." Were those numbers not there jumping out at me I'd never know to send the note! Heck, 'twould be even easier if the find count was included in the log email. (Or hidden within a system such as an asterisk for those with fewer than 10 finds.) Just a consideration before they get buried into oblivion... OK, back to the original moot point flaming, Randy
  20. Hahaha!!! OK, cool, just 'cause I keep my mouth shut from now on though doesn't mean the legacy users I represent are no longer here... (Or I'm any less interested in "giving back"/contributing...) I love site improvements (in one of the best designed websites around) and am delighted with the level of care taken consistently. (Nevermind with a great sense of humor!) Sincerely Jeremy et. al., thank you, Randy PS: You don't know, especially now that snow has returned, how much I appreciate cache attributes--probably every third hunt!
  21. For who? Yes, that was a really lousy change and continues to be a real pain in the you know what... To get to the second page: 1. Cycle through and close all other browser windows (I usually have 3-4 open) 2. Enable JS 3. Wait for page to reload 4. Wait for javascript to load (negligable here) 5. Click link 6. Wait for new page to load 7. Wait for it's script to load 8. Don't forget to disable script before calling up other sites!! Needless to say, I don't go to other pages often, it became too slow/painful... Enjoy, Randy
  22. Oh, I forgot to mention, you could just append an asterisk to the name of caches that have the user selected attribute! (Since it would be tied to user account, it could also be restricted to highest revenue generating users.) Enjoy, Randy
  23. Nah, would take too much space and screw up the layout like coins do--no thanks! Yeah, I knew you could filter PQ's on atts, but figured many don't cache that way (as I don't). Thanks for the consideration though! Randy
  24. I had a feature request thought (that I haven't seen before, but who knows). Sorta' complex to describe so please bear with me. The premise is users would select a cache attribute in their profile that matters most to them, be it the wheelchair for the disabled, kids for families, dogs for owners, bikes, 4x4s, snow-friendly, etc. The feature is that chosen attribute would then show up on the nearest.aspx listing (ala' customized distance from their home coords). That way you don't have to open slews of cache pages just to find one or two you can do this trip... Come to think of it, 'twould minimize site traffic too. Just an idea, hopefully a new one, Randy
  25. Since this thread I've learned of this option: [url=http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default.aspx?u=RJFerret]http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default.aspx?u=RJFerret[/url You need to use %20 for spaces in user names obviously. If this made it to the 'To Do' list, not showing location would be good too. Enjoy, Randy
