  1. I don't mind so much if they overlap, it's more that I don't want to miss any in the middle so I want to drop the individual PQ radius sizes down to encourage the server to get those mid-range ones.
  2. I've tried working like that, but how did you know they didn't overlap, or where they covered? That method works for me if my areas are far apart, or I'm running a predetermined route, but not when I want to systematically keep track of every cache in a city. I may be going crazy, but it seems like when I download a pocket query from a location, it doesn't seem to take all of the nearest ones. When I download 200 and 500 from the same starting location, the 200 will just have missing ones in the middle (as in, it won't just be missing the 300 furthest away that the 500 got, but rather random ones all at different distances). I'd like to be able to know exactly which files have which section of caches (like file 1 has all caches east of main street, file 2 is west) instead of hoping that the radius of file 1 doesn't stretch into the west side of main street. I've found that I can use geoqo to export files with filters, such as longitude<40 which I can sort of go through on google earth and pick longitudes that work, but it would be nice if there was a program that already did that. Through this search I've actually become familiar with the xml structure of a gpx file and might just write the program myself But I'd like to see if it exists already. Thanks again
  3. Hello all, I have an explorist 500 that I use for geocaching, and my only real problem with it is the 200 cache limit. I'm looking for a way to organize more caches on it just using geographically separate files (i.e. a file for the south of the city with ~200, a file for the center with ~200, file for the north with whatever is left). Do any of you know an easy way to do this? I've been looking at using EasyGPS's map to drag-select files, but I'm using linux and EasyGPS fails to load gpx files. I can find a way to make EasyGPS work if it will do the job, but am looking for alternatives. Also, since a pocket query only holds 500 caches, is there a way to build a second (or more) query that only adds geocaches not found on the first query (so there are no duplicates)? Thanks

  5. Worked perfectly, thanks! And thank you all here for your help.
  6. How would one go about adding these good free maps to the Venture HC?
  7. Edit: Internet died. Double post. Sorry.
  8. Thanks. And hopefully one last question: Is there a way to upload detail maps to the Venture HC using Mapsend Topo 3D? I use it with my explorist where I just create the .imi file and put it on my SD card, but the Venture HC lacks an SD card and Mapsend doesn't recognize the GPS unit when I try to send the maps directly (nor do I see any way to just copy files over to the internal memory).
  9. Our new (refurbished) Venture HC just came in and I've been playing with it for an hour or so, and I have to admit I'm tempted to leave my explorist for it. It looks new, works like new, and works great at that. Within 5 minutes of having it out of the box, I'm already loaded with geocaches and accurately tracking them from inside my basement (which is something the explorist could never do for me). My only question so far is if any of you know the maximum number of geocaches it can hold. I tried to upload 900ish and it came up with a message saying "Waypoint limit reached", but never told me where the limit was. I did upload 190 without a problem though. That aside, this is a great unit and I am seriously considering getting another one for myself as backup.
  10. I did check out the PN-20 but the reviews didn't seem too favorable, with compatability and performance issues, and with the price of the refurbished model we figured we'd try it out. I'll let you know how it goes when it gets here
  11. Thank you all for the suggestions, opinions, and links. They've really helped out and I think we're going with the Venture HC (especially for that low price for the refurbished one). This should be more than enough to keep my family geocaching happily for years to come. Thanks again for the help.
  12. Read through a good bit of this thread before attempting an upgrade and, to my surprise, it worked flawlessly. I registered my 500 NA version as a 500 EU version, downloaded the 2.57 update, and followed the instructions on the download page. All told probably took 4 minutes, and my GPS even seems to run a lot better now. The new screens are shiny and fun to play with, although I haven't determined if they're useful yet.
  13. Hello, I'm looking to get a cheap GPS for my family to do geocaching with. I've looked around at various reviews and lists but decided it would be easiest to directly ask for opinions here. What I'm looking at: etrex H for $99 -Really just for the price. If it allowed me to import a few hundred caches at a time though, it would suffice. Triton 1500 (I think, or rather, my dad thinks he saw on sale) for about $150. -Comes with an SD slot, but I hear bad things about the software and working with it. etrex Summit HC for $120 -No SD slot, but it is listed as "Geocaching-friendly" Basically what I want is the ability to download .loc or, preferably, .gpx files and load a large number of geocaches at once into it (even if it needs to go through something like GSAK first), and then easily select and go to them by position. Detailed road maps would be nice but not necessary. My question is: which of these units does that the best? I don't really need any more features than just support for adding multiple geocaches at once (don't need hints, logs, anything like that, although they would be nice too). For reference, I myself use an Explorist 500 and it does everything I want it to do amazingly. I would just get my family one if they weren't discontinued and all used on ebay. Thanks
