  1. Welcome to the area. As I'm sure you've already checked, there are lots of caches in the "corridor" (CR/IC/Waterloo area). The Coralville Reservoir/Lake McBride area has lots of water, but I don't have any idea how good it is for kayaking. There is an attempt to create a project called River Run (http://www.gotideas.biz/scripts/news_x-sports.asp) that would include (among many things) a man-made white water course. The project hasnt gotten the support it needs (yet) to get started but the supporters seemed to be pretty dedicated so who knows. There are several Rails to Trails trails (old railroad right of ways that have been converted to nature trails) in the area. The longest, The Cedar Valley Nature Trail, runs from CR to Waterloo http://www.cedarvalleytrail.com/links.html. As for actual hiking...There are lots of parks in the area with trails. For something more difficult, I've heard/read good things about the trail system at Backbone SP (2-3 hours north of IC near Strawberry point) and Yellow River SF (3-4 hours away, north of Dubuque) but have not been to either. The Iowa County Conservation Board web site (http://george.ecity.net/iaccb/welcome.html) has links to and info about all of the counties. Linn (Cedar Rapids) and Johnston (Iowa City) both have pretty good pages. Hope this gives you someplace to start. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask. There are several cachers in the area that are more than happy to help. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 2. I cant say if 475 is a limit or not, but the last set I did was 459 waypoints. What are you using to convert the GPX to HMTL, and have you checked the HTML to make sure that what you think should be in the output is actually in the output. Also, have you double checked the Maximum Depth setting on the Limits tab. I always forget to change that one when I set up a new channel so it doesnt go past the first page. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 4. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy (Admin):Notice the new filtered search on your "my cache page" Nope, I hadn't. Thanks for pointing that out. quote:Adding &f=1 to the end of the old querystring queries will filter out caches you hid/found. The This works well also. To add my two cents worth on the new page, I think that once we all get used to it we will forget the other layout ever existed. 5. quote:Originally posted by Morty's Twisted World: Only thing that I don't like, is that I can't BOOKMARK that page of results that's been filtered out. I try and bookmark it and it takes me back to the NEW SEARCH page. If there could I agree! In the mean time, you do realize (dont you?) that the new page is backwards compatible with old bookmarks. Im sure there are limits, but I know my old book mark for the results of my Zip code search still works. I just cant change it to use the new "dont include my hides/finds". Oh Well....Maybe enough people will make this request and it will get implemented. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 6. Thanks Desert Warrior, I wondered if that was what the 'D' was. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  7. I was on my way to a cache the other day and had the legend sitting on my dash, like I usually do. I looked at it to see if it had acquired yet and was surprised to see it showing 8ft accuracy with good signal from 10 satellites. In addition to the 8ft, I noticed that each of the signal bar graphs had a 'D' in them. I dont have the unit handy right now, but I think I have v2.50 of the firmware installed. Anyone see this kind of accuracy before, or know what the 'D' represents? ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Maybe it is like the poppies in Wizard of Oz...Or maybe it is like when the kids pick every violet in the yard and make their mom put them in her hair. Not to make light of someone being assaulted, but your typo got a silly image in my head and made my afternoon, thanks.
  9. Congrats on all accounts. Ive never met you but have enjoyed reading your logs, both in the field and on line. Can you tell us what area is going to gain a good cachin' team? ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 10. Has any one tried using one of the telescoping painters poles as a walking stick? The one I have lying around is aluminum; about 1" diameter and about 4' (extends to 7') long. One end has a handle and the other is threaded to accept the paint roller. Im thinking with a bit of creativity you could thread a hook or a basket and point onto it. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 11. Being 1/1 they may have been discovered and removed/plundered. However it seems unlikely that several of them went missing (you didnt say how many different caches made up your 11 attempts). The best indication is probably how recently each one has been logged (either found or not found) by someone else. Also, I see that you did not log your Did Not Finds. These are important as they help the owner keep tabs on the cache. A single Did Not Find is to be expected once in a while, but if the owner sees multiple DNF (along with the information in each log) it may warrent a trip to check on the cache. Dont give up. Add a watch to one of the ones you have attempted and see if someone logs. Then go try it again. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 12. Someone mentioned ValueWeb, this is what we use at work. They had some email problems right after we signed up, but have been solid for a couple of weeks now. Since I am an 'ole cheapie, I couldnt bring myself to pay even a modest amount for a site that has very little and is updated very infrequently. I am using www.freeservers.com and have been pretty happy. The only hassle is that their free account doesnt let you FTP your pages to the server. You have to use their "site builder tool" that just has you add text to their template, or their "file manager" that makes you create each directory and enter each file name manually. Oh well....you get what you pay for ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  13. There were other logs missing. I dont know off hand how many but for all three, my log was in my PQ, so it was still within the last 5. Hmmmm, oh well. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  14. That is basically what his reply to my email said. He didnt elaborate but it doesnt seem to me that disabling and reenabling a cache should cause logs to disappear. Is this expected behavior or a possible problem with the site that that Jeremy et. al. would want to look into? ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 15. I just noticed that three caches I have found are listed in the not found portion of my nearest caches page. When I looked into this, I see that my logs are missing from the pages (in fact all logs are missing for a several-week time period). The caches dont show up in the list on My Cache Page though my total finds number still reflects them. They do show up, and all of the logs apear ok, in my Found Caches pocket query from last Monday. They do not show up in my Not Found PQ from Wednesday, so either this is a recent issue, or the web site and PQ are not reporting the same info. The caches in question are: Auburn Bridge Lime Creek Lime Creek Update: Ive just noticed that all three caches are hidden by the same person. Ive emailed the hider to see if the finds/logs were removed intentionally. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 16. I was just poking around on Amazon and see that they have S&T for $9.99 after a couple of rebates. Here is the page. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------

  18. Though it doesnt help for most people.... A couple of weeks ago the Cabelas store in Dundee, MI had a couple of dozen 50 cal cans in the bargain cave for $1.99ea. Also, the local Theisens (a farm/discount store) has the 50 cal cans for $3.99. Just keep an eye out anyplace that has outdoor stuff. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  19. Ive seen them recently at Target (and maybe Walmart) for the same $189.
  20. Though I like "Garmin", based on leatherman's avatar, Id have to suggest Magellan (which works just as well) ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  21. Hey MI Cachers.... Im in the DTW area on business and ran over to Dundee last night to hit Cabelas. They have several (maybe two dozen) 50 cal ammo cans in the Bargain Cave for $1.99ea. They appear to be used; some have a bit of rust and the one that I opened was missing the rubber gasket in the lid. 22. Interesting opinions.... I wonder if the division between Yah and Nay follow peoples level of comfort with cemeteries in general. My family spends a lot of time in them doing genealogy, so we would not have a problem with a tastefully done cache, particularly if there was some connection such as getting a clue from or ending up at a famous/interesting headstone. You know...In other times cemeteries were kind of like a park. People would take a picnic and spend the day in the cemetery. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. 23. quote:Originally posted by Stunod: The help file for Watcher states: ... Note: currently there is an issue with EasyGPS which makes it incapable of correctly reading the GPX files generated by Watcher. To get around this issue, after saving the file with Watcher, reopen it in Window's WordPad or other suitable text editor, and replace all instances of "/>" with " />". Note the added space. Thanks Stunod, that is probably the problem, however the work around is not much better than the problem itself... (Hey ClayJar, how about a "Save As Broken EasyGPS" option ) HartClimbs, I do use my Palm to carry the descriptions. Ive been using an app I wrote that takes a gpx/loc file and generates a html file with links to each cache page. I point Plucker to this (with a spider depth of 2) and have it grab all of the pages. Given how big and slow MobiPocket is, I think Ill go back to this way. Guess Ill have to "whip up" another app to do the search-and-replace automatically. Thanks for the input. ------------------------------------------------ The world is a playground. Go outside and play! ------------------------------------------------
  24. Im sitting here planning my first outing since becoming a premium member and am a bit baffled. Ive got my GPX and have used Watcher (0.1.33) to pick-and-choose my targets. I saved the filtered list and went to load it in EasyGPS (v1.2.2) but nothing shows up. Hmmmm, ok, Ill run it through GPSBabel to "dumb it down". That works, but GPSBabel strips the waypoint symbol field so now I have to save it with EasyGPS (to put the symbol field back in) then run it through an app I wrote to change the symbol from "Waypoint" to "Geocache". There must be a shorter way.....What am I missing?
  25. I just noticed that my Number of Posts was reset about the same time the forums were moved. I also notice that many others number was not reset. Anyone else have this? Is this a Member/Non Member thing? Also, interesting that all posts show the current number, not the number as it was when the post was made.
