I live in Detroit, MI but will be in Richland County this coming weekend. I'm coming for some cache maintenance on my Up Ferguson Way at Malabar Farm State Park and to do some local caching. We're driving down early Saturday and staying at the Malabar Hostel and would welcome any other cachers to join us for the hunt. Most likely we'll be doing the nearby Mohican area caches Saturday. 3. Just bringing the good stuff back to the top. And don't forget that the Traverse City MIGO Winter Convergence is coming up this weekend with over 70 some attendees slated to be there! Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  4. Of course, for an out-of-towner, it would help to know the the airport is in Romulus, Michigan (zipcode 48174). The closest appears to be the Dollar Store Cache (GC79ED) about 2.5 miles north of the airport. The next problem is that in the Motor City area walking on the streets is frowned upon by motorists (they'll sometimes aim at you! ) and there are no sidewalks for you to safely walk to a cache, even if it was closer. Take a cab to a cache? Not that's a different idea! Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  5. quote:Originally posted by rally180:I am driving from Cincinnati to Detroit along I-75 this Saturday. .... If anyone knows of any caches along I75, I would appreciate it. I drive on a regular basis between Detroit and Cincinnati. I was born in Cincinnati but live in Detroit. My mom still lives in N. Kentucky. Happy Trailsis just off I-75 S of Dayton. Where's my Teddy Bear? was a no find near Lima. Gone Fishin' was also a no find near Lima Across the Universe is only 10 miles I-75 near Lima (it's in Ada) and is an easy find and you don't have to retrace your route to get back on I-75. I-75 and Rt. 6 near Bowling Green is almost too close. It may be harder to find if there's snow on the ground. Power Lady is just across the border into Michigan and only a mile off I-75. Those are a few of the ones I've done along that route. I post more as I think of them. I'm going to do an I-75 cache webpage "real soon now". 7. I read somewhere on the Ohio DNR webpages or someplace that the decision was up to the individual park manager. So when I placed my Up Ferguson Way Cache, I asked the Malabar Farm State Park manager for permission. He was unaware of any policy regarding Geocaches or the hobby. I have since attempted to relocate the webpage where I first read the criteria but couldn't locate it. While my cache hasn't been visited much, the park manager hasn't contacted me about removing it. I gave him my home address and phone number as well as my email address. Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  8. The real clue to your problem is not WAAS but the base map. Without even knowing which brand/model of GPS, you're using I can probably say that its maps are vector graphic based. That is, the GPS has a limited number of points for each road. It would impossible to store every curve and bend in every highway in a handheld GPS map. The system relies on having a finite number of plotting points and then drawing STRAIGHT lines between them. This usually accounts for tracks showing you driving parallel to the road but not on it. Adding a downloaded map to the GPS unit increases the number of plotted points for each road and adds points to define other roads that don't fit into the base map memory. If I'm not correct on this, I hope someone else has a better explanation. Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  9. Are you sure that sawing off the lid is required? Leaving it sealed makes it harder to plunder. Now what are we talking about? Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  10. Post more, steal more avatars? I love to fill out the "Forms" incorrectly! Keeps them guessing Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  11. I have been using plastic screw top jars for several of my caches. While mine are translucent rather than transparent, they have held up well in Michigna winter weather. I got several jars (1-1/2 gallon) from a place called U.S. Plastics in Lima, OH and others (1 gallon) at a dollar store which where only $1. I painted the jars to camoflague them but that's another issue. You can buy clear "Pet" (food grade) jars and PVC jars from a number of suppliers for $2 to $5. The real limitation with them is the mouth opening. A CD would fit inside them but won't go through the opening. The screw top works out better than snap lids since most animals can't unscrew a lid but can pop a Tupperware. Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  12. 3 points may work real well in an ideal world but the GPS receivers are designed to with 4 signals to eliminate clock errors. See Trimble's GPS tutorial for an explanantion. How GPS works - Getting perfect timing The Trimble site requires a Shockwave Player to view the illustrations. 13. Sorry. I guess I was too presumptous and my sexism is showing At any rate, I hope you have an enjoyable trip to Florida and do manage to get some caching in on the way. Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  14. Unfortunately, the ones in Ohio were too far north of his connecting to I-75. From Illinois, he wouldn't be getting on I-75 until someplace in Kentucky. I travel just about monthly between Detroit (where I live) and Cincinnati (where my mother lives and I was born). Hopefully soon I'll be posting a list of I-75 caches on my website listing all of the caches in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky that are within a short distance (5-10 miles) of the interstate and findable within a 1/2 to 1 hour time. They make for nice travel breaks when my wife lets me stop. I haven't had time to finish my homepage much less do this part of the website. The limits would leave out caches like T'Dogs that are not findable within a short time and multiple caches like the Sith Impossible series. Please send me any suggestions for ones that are north of Saginaw, MI or south of Lexington, KY. I've done a number of them along my route but not all. I've missed Back to School (Wapakoneta) and failed to find 2 out of 3 caches right near Lima last weekend Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  15. I have and use 2 Pocket PC units. I usually carry my Compaq Aero with a 32Mb memory card. I have over 400 Geocaching Webpages saved to the memory card and it's only half filled. I just save the webpage from IE and transfer them to the Aero memory. The Aero is a B&W unit and the MobiPocket Reader with Pocket Queries won't work on it. It displays in gray with a gray background. It's only barely readable with the backlight on. My Casio EM-500 works great with MobiPocket but it's display is unusuable in daylight. The sun or any direct light washes out the display.(But it looked great in the store!) I use it in the car to play MP3s and Audible talking books. The Geocoder software only works with Pocket PC with the ARM processor. Both of mine use the older MIPS CPU. Oh Well! Now how can I convince the wife my techno-toys are obsolete and must be replaced. 17. Looks like jfk is from Ohio or way south in Michigan (Monroe?). So let's have a get-togther at Tony Packos Cafe in Toledo! It's only a few miles distance south of the border, right off the I-280 freeway and there's even a cache really close by (about 1/4 mile to Wasteland). I need to get a few more of those Good Dog caches done and others in the area. Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now!
  18. Hey! Let's not be be too hard on the noob. It would appear he's fairly young (a student) and unexperienced (1 find). Maybe he's just jumping ahead of himself. Just give him the information he needs without being too critical of his effort. Let us at least wait and see if he learns how to use the Shift and Caps Lock keys on his keyboard. If he's just another L88T D00D, then crush him! "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" - William of Occam
  19. I'm still using my 3 year-old Kodak DC-290. It's survived a lot of caching, mushroom, camping and even a few weddings. If the risk of damage is high, like an over water cache retrieval, than I carry my even older Kodak DC-120. It's only 1Mb but has a nice zoom and macro capabilities. I also had a JamCam (640x480 for $30) but gave that away to friend to do eBay pictures. As for the Avatar and Sigs, try some of that mystical logging off and on stuff. Eventually mine started working the way I wanted. "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" - William of Occam
  20. I thought the best way to work off some of that turkey was to go caching. Unfortunately, I got my butt in gear too late to complete the 6-part cache I started to do. It's past dusk and almost dark at 5PM in Michigan right now. And no, I didn't have Jello, just Cranberry Sauce. And I completely avoided those green beans from Hell with the mushroom gravy and canned fried onions! "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" - William of Occam
  21. Coating the Tupperware with some hot pepper spray or powder would work for squirrels and most rodents but not all small animals would be deterred by it. In fact,a lot of birds love the taste. Plus consider the poor cacher who rubs his eyes while handling a peppered cache container. The mothballs around the cache might be a better idea. I've had good luck with an ammonia soaked rag to keep varmints from returning to a burrow near my house. Of course, it wouldn't last a long time and your cache would have a certain urinated smell. Pieces of rope soaked in bone oil will keep almost all animals away from a garden. Don't know how it would work on a cache but it smells bad to everything and everybody. 22. While Puffballs are large and edible, what they gain in quantity they lose in quality. I've gathered them before and their taste is a strong mushroom flavor even when fresh and they have all the appeal of eating styrofoam. Dipping in an egg batter and breading them was about the only they tasted OK. That way the breading hides their true taste. And the ones I sliced and put away in deep freeze stunk up everything else in the freezer. 23. Sorry, UMC. We've decided to hit a few more north of the city. (Auburn Hills & Rochester area) I'll get to your other ones soon. As for the Novi Lake Shore Park, as I know its name. I used to mountain bike there on the trails. Something I haven't been able to do much in the last year or so. My joints are showing some wear. While it's a great woods, I've never had much luck finding mushrooms there which is my personal critera on judging the quality of a woodland area.
