  1. It's too far to drive down for me, but I'm wondering how many Indiana cachers are spending the night in Carmel waiting for Treasure of St. Lazurus? "Adrift in a world he never made!"

  4. OK! I did not, honestly , any of the previous posts. I just hit reply. BTW, I'm sure UMC has already contributed to this thread. Don't tell me if I'm wrong. Like the rest of us Detroiters, he was sitting in the dark without an Internet connection for at least 24 hours! I must have been like hell! "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  5. Here's my card as posted in the MIGO Sig Database It's a bit weathered in this picture but I like to not laminate them so that a good conditon card is harder to find. That, hopefully, makes cachers get out there and cache more often in order to find a good card. I usually take only calling cards unless there is a request for it to be left in a cache. I'm building up a collection of them. I always leave an equal number of mine for what I take out. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  6. quote:Originally posted by Stroh:Does anyone have any comments on how good these packs are? ... I've been using one of these Sportsman's Guide "Tactical Hydration Packs" for about 2 months now. The overall quality is quite good. The material is strong and rugged. My only complaints has been the stitching on the sternum strap and a add-on flashlight holder gave out. The wife was able to mend both easily. The water bladder has taken some time to eliminate the plastic taste but they seem durable enough and the valve has held up well. The insulated compartment has kept an ice cube and water filled bladder moderately cool after a 6-8 hour day. "Adrift in a world he never made!"

  8. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:If nothing else, it's a boatload of free advertising.... http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Always the cynic! BTW, when I cast my three votes, I chose avatars that I thought would look good when carved in wood. Photographic avatars would simply be too hard to reproduce. I don't think you could ever match enough details to please everyone. Hats off to El Diablo for even offering to do any design. And Good Luck to whoever wins! (Hope it includes me but not some bucket of doots! ) "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  9. I missed this thread earlier but here's my avatar. It was drawn by my friend Willam Messner-Loebs and looks quite a bit like me except I always cache wearing shoes. Here's a link to a full size picture- The Silver GPSer! "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  10. quote:Originally posted by Jolly B Good:What about mushroom hunters? Is it too late in the season in your area for that to have been a factor/... If the NFWS guidelines are to be strictly followed, mushroom hunting is not permitted in game and wildlife areas. Only activities involving fishing, hunting or trapping are allowed. Bring your leg hold trap to capture those mushrooms! And shoot those birds before you watch them. Casual hiking for any reason other than wildlife "management" is outside the allowable guidelines. Detroit Airport

Sorry, the answers to your questions are no travel bug portal and no nearby accessible caches. There does not exist any such thing as public transportation to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport or to most of the rest of the Detroit area. Be sure and pack your automobile . There are caches within 2-3 miles but there are no sidewalks or any safe way to walk away from the airport without risking heavy automobile traffic. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  12. Arrghh! No, I had not seen the event notice for this cache. It's a bit out of my normal range but I would have tried to make if I could. Unfortunately, MIGO has an event the same weekend here in Michigan near Battle Creek. A Caching/Camping Weekend It also has been planned months in advance. We need to pass on such information to other groups so we could attend each other's events. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  13. quote:Originally posted by nvc83:... you mean bodies arent good trades in a cache? hmm, guess ill have to stop that... Read the GUIDE TO CREATING AND HIDING A CACHE! Do not put food in a cache! "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  14. quote:Originally posted by Dinoprophet:...The Knock List is the area's first bonafide urban micro, .. By urban, does he mean the gaint metropolis of Lake Orion? There are a lot more "urban" places than Lake Orion like Detroit that have had micro caches for a while longer. "Back Ally Find" by eklund is one that immediately comes to mind as a real urban micro. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  15. Sorry I could'nt make it "home" this weekend to help pick up trash in the rain. Glad you had a good turnout for the event and hopefully my travel plans will include a weekend in Cincy when some other event is happening. Keep us posted here on new events. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  16. I've been an mushroom hunter for years and am a member of the Michigan Mushroom Hunter's Club. The North American Mycological Association is a good national organization. If you want to find a mushroom club in your area, check out their website. I've found many a mushroom while caching and photographed quite a few of them. These puffballs are edible. I just don't like the strong taste and aroma of puffballs! I like Boletes but always worry about identifying them. I'm sure these were a poisonous variety. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  17. Vegas!!! Yuucckk! Why don't we all get together at a Tim Hortons. A non-urban tourist destination might be a better location. Of course, with no caching in National Parks that rules out Yellowstone, Yosemite and such. But how about some other park location? "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  18. quote:Originally posted by The GeoGadgets Team:Now, I'm not real sure how to go about this, but can't one use wild mustard for something beneficial? ... ... seeds of white mustard can be dried then used whole (for pickling) or crushed to powder the same way that one can the white mustard powder that Schilling sells (in soups, stews and sauces). Unfortunately, the seeds of garlic mustard are not like regular mustard seeds, but are much smaller and black, more like fine poppy seeds. The real problem is that one garlic mustard plant can produce a thousand or more seeds that germinate and crowd out native plants. There are lots of areas where I can no longer show anyone the beauty of squirrel corn, dutchmen's breeches or other wild flowers in the spring for the overwhelming amounts of garlic mustard plants. The usefulness of a plant does not necessarily make it a valued addition to an ecosystem. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  19. I always scan the forums for Cincinnati area activity. While I live in Detroit, I've always considered myself a "Cincinnatian" and would be interested in meeting some of the local cachers. I'd also like to join any group that may form. I'm only in town about once a month or so to visit my mom in Florence, KY. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  20. I was involved with the local orienteering group for several years in the early 80s. While I enjoyed the sport as an activity, the Ann Arbor/U of M group viewed it as solely a competitive sport. They came out, ran the course, logged their times and left when the results where posted. It was not a social activity and you were ignored if you weren't running the course and didn't finish with main group. Geocaching is much more social and they no problem stopping to see a bird, plant or mushroom along the way. Geocachers will even take time to admire a view. Unless orienteering has changed a lot, I believe it's still mainly an athletic competition and not a family activity (unless it's a family of runners.) I stil carry my old Silva Prospecter and probably have stashed away somewhere my old laminated topo maps of some of the regular orienteering spots. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  21. I'm not a Ford employee but I've put your bug on my watch list. I'm sure the Geocachers here in Michigan can help your bug meet its goal. Let's hope it can get here by mid-June for Ford's 100th anniservary celebration. Some information on the festivities was already in this Sunday's newspaper. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  22. quote:Originally posted by umc:I annoy the world.. ... and dadgum good at it too! Personally, I'm a field service technician for a security (alarms and card access) company. I drive around all day just wishing I could stop and look for that cache that's really close to where I'm driving. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  23. I just noticed on the Garmin website, a new update for the Etrex Legend. The new Version (3.10) now lets you store 1000 waypoints! With almost 900 caches in Michigan, this update is just what i've been wanting. I can now store all the local waypoints and the ones I need to add when traveling. I just loaded it up and it seems to work fine. Just remember that it will reset your contrast setting (your screen will be dark) and you will have to re-input your owner information (a feature added in version 2.50).
