  1. Another aRRKS cache reasonably close to Crewe is Grumble in the Drumble. A multi with some beautifully thought out mini caches before the final ammo box. It hasn't been visited since Oct last year so I hope it's all still in place This remains our favourite cache to date and we've used to introduce a number of friends to caching. Have a great break Ray
  2. Got one of these for Christmas. Lovely bit of kit. Trying to get my head round Linpus Linux Lite, just hope I have enough grey cells left. Anyone got any experience of any software that may be useful for caching or will I be better off switching to windows when possible. Thanks in advance Ray
  3. Im not getting an error message, but since the changes if I enter my full postcode I end up with a search based in Indiana, which is strange as I live in Newcasle Staffs. If I just put in the 1st 3 digits then it seems ok. Ive tried other full postcodes in Staffordshire and Cornwall and they seem to return the correct search so I dont know whats happening there. Any ideas?
  4. I didn't find the boots sorry. But that's because we didn't end up going up Tryfan. Weather forecast not great, but we were still planning on going but with the weather forecast saying possible thunder and lightning... thought it best not to be over 900 metres above sea level with clapping great big thunderbolts zapping around you... erred on side of caution and if affected the rescue mission for your boots. Sorry! Scott Edited because I missed the n't on did! Me go loco. Good decision. Not a good place to be in a thunderstorm. Not that I've ever got there. But who knows after my Neuro Linguistic Programming in August (fear of heights course) perhaps I will realise my ambition. Thanks for trying anyway. Now where to find a good pair of walking boots for one forgetful son? RayAl&boys
  5. Thanks for that. You never know, long shots work sometimes. While we were at the foot ot Tryfan we were joking about a competition I entered recently in trail magaazine. The prize was a course for people suffering from a fear of heights.(me) Guess what arrived in my inbox yesterday. Confirmation I've won a place on the course up in the Peak District. So who knows, next time I might be at the top of Tryfan looking down not just wishing I could get up there. Fingers crossed & thanks for trying. RayAl&boys
  6. Hi. Just had a great weekends walking in Snowdonia. Only thing to mar this was that Joe unfortunately left his walking boots in a layby between Tryan and Ogwen Cottage. I know there are caches in the area having previously visited some myself. So if any fellow cachers happened to find them or handed them in anywhere could they let me know. I know its a long shot but its got to be worth a try. We must be a forgetful family as I left my digital camera in the very same layby last year and someone handed that in. The boots are blue and made by Karrimor. Fingers crossed Ray of RayAl&boys
  7. Yes Plusnet is our problem. Just recd their apology mail. Good to know GC.com hasnt let us down RayAl&boys
  8. We've just had a few days away and come back to find our in box full of junk. Most of yesterdays related o photoshop & the rest to dubious pills and body parts. This is the first spam we have experienced as we are always very careful with our address. Is this just a coincidence? RayAl&boys
  9. Just to let you know, I got the P550 back from Mio on Wednesday. They received it on the Monday of the previous week. They replaced the motherboard and all seem to be OK. They even sent me a Mio Digiwalker embossed screen cleaning cloth. I''m pretty pleased with the service and all achieved without phoning 0870. Thanks again for the help offered. Ray
  10. Hi Thanks for the info. I had been having a look at that very thread and have got it bookmarked ready for when I get the P550 back. Hopefully quite soon. Thanks RayAl&boys
  11. Hi It was me who started the original thread. I was in the process of relading my software following a reset to factory settings All I had was Tom Tom 6 Memory map v5 BeelineGPS Microsoft Reader. I was doing a reset to load new fonts in ms reader (as instructed on screen) when the P550 froze. All the other software had loaded OK and was working. Incidentally, I loaded Beeline as an alternative to Cachemate as with Cachenav the direction arrow was very unstable. Does anyone else suffer this problem? How does Beeline compare with Cachemate? I didn't get chance to actually try it whilst out caching. The P550 has gone back for repair now. I managed to get it all done via e-mail so so far have avoided a call to that expensive help line, but I dont hold out much hope in getting it back for our halfterm break in the lakes, so it looks like the old legend and paper maps will have to come out again. 12. Thanks for the speedy response Stora. Ive tried it with mains power and leaving it switched off overnight without success. I hadn't tried the memory card idea, but unfortunately nothing any different, just stuck with the Mio splash screen. thanks for trying. RayAl&boys
  13. Hi Below is the text of an email I have sent to Mio. Reading up they dont appear to be very forthcoming with replies. While i'm waiting just wondered if if anyone on here might have any ideas otherwise it will have to be the 35ppm help line "I'm having a few problems with my P550. Machine locked up last week and I had to do a reset bringing it back to factory settings (hold joystick up and reset) Everything was fine but as I was reloading Microsoft Reader software I got a message saying this adds new fonts and to reset for them to take effect. This I duly did with the usual soft reset but it will not move past the Mio splash screen. I have tried with the on off switch and the factory reset as well but all to no avail. It just gets to the splash screen and no further. Please can you help? We are going away in February half term and are/were looking forward to our 1st proper trip with Tom Tom, Memory May and geocaching software in tow. Look forward to hearing from you" Fingers crossed that someone can help. Thanks in advance RayAl&boys
  14. We are using mio p550 with tomtom, memorymap and cachemate. Had everything set up and working on recent trip to Yorkshire Dales. Followed recent topic to stop Activesyync auto starting and after this IE would not work. Did a full reset and started from scratch. Mananged to get Tomtom and memory map working with GPS but cannot get cachemate/cachenav to find a GPS signal Can anyone give any help on what settings we need to use to get us up and running as we have run out of ideas, Look forward to getting some help. Thanks inadvance RayAl&boys
  15. Thanks for the input helping me to decide which PPC route to take. I am now using Mio P550 with Tomtom , Memory map and cachemate. I didn't realise that it included cache nav and thought I would have to buy some more software. Found our 1st cache with it at the weekend and navigated successfully with memory map on our walking break.Heaven! Thanks again. My question is can you back up the Tomtom SD card? as I am worried in case anything goes wrong with it. With the weather during our break I think an otterbox my be a sensible idea as well. Hope to hear from someone. Thanks in anticipation RayAl&boys
  16. Hi I am looking to possibly buy a Mio P550 pocket PC if I can be sure the GPS signal problem has been sorted. My query is what are the pros/cons between MioMap & Tom Tom? I dont seem to be able to find a comparison between the two. Any help out there? Sorry if this has been asked before, please just point me in the right direction if this is the case. Thanks Ray
  17. Many thanks for the input on my question. I have now had a reply from globalpositioningsystems.co.uk who tell me this unit wont run Memory Map so it looks like I wont be having one. Thanks again for the help
  18. This isn't looking promising, plenty of looks but not even a tiny comment. Does this mean Im looking at the wrong sort of machine to replace my tatty Legend. Here is a link to the machine in question Garmin iQue M4 Any views/ comments welcome Thanks in anticipation Ray
  19. Looking at this Garmin pocket PC/GPS on GPS systems website and it seems like a very good offer. Has anyone got any experience of this unit? Can memory map be loaded on to it? Hope someone out there can give us a few pointers. Thanks RayAl&boys
  20. I use the official Garmin gizmo to attach my legend to my road bike. Used it last year on a cycling holiday in Majorca where we took in some pretty rough tracks. On one days cycling(about 80miles) it recorded a mileage of nearer 1500 miles and according to the map ended up somewhere in Turkey. I seem to remember the max speed was pretty spectacular too. maybe that was to do with battery contacts, i'm not sure and any way it didn't really matter. What did matter was that ever since then a portion of the screen near the top has gone blank. The unit is still useable but its a pain having that bit missing. May be worth considering depending on what sort of terrain you will be riding and it may not be a problem if you have suspension. I still use mine on the bike and the problem hasn't got any worse. Ray
  21. We visited Lizard Point (Cornwall) cache on 31/8/2004 and it subsequently was never found again and was replaced at a different location. In August 2005 we were down there for our hols again so thought we would check out the old cache site as we could remember exactly where it was. Lo & behold there it was still safe and sound and dry as a bone with one other log after our 2004 one. Were going down to Cornwall again this year, will it still be there?. Incidentally we visited another cache set by the same cacher Nawtcher called Pilots Lookout (Cornwall) again back in 2004. After two attempts we eventually found the micro cache, secreted deep in some ivy growing up a tree between 5 and 6 feet above ground. When we came to log the find it had been archived before we found it. An email from Nawtcher confirmed it was the cache but that it was pure luck that we found it as that wasn't where he placed it. perhaps we'll check that out again as well RayAl&boys
  22. SORTED. Many thanks Moote & Master Mariner for all the help and guidance. I really was beginning to think the only solution was to move to 'Monsal Grove', which would be a pity because we're all very happy living where we are. Thanks again
  23. Anybody now why I don't have the "user script commands" option in Tools? Do I need to install something else first? Steve. Hi Steve You need to be on a cache page and logged in as well. If everything else is loaded then this should work. Now can you help me with my problem? RayAl&boys
  24. Thanks for your further input Moote. As the GPS/mapsource flies I live just under 5 miles away from Monsal Grove (9 miles by road) (the other side of the Potteries) As regards the GPS setup - position format is hddd.mm/mmm and datum is WGS84. Checked my coords this morning. They came out at 53.03073,-2.15654 which is pretty close to what I have entered into the script. My post code is ST5 7TQ. A post code for an address on Monsal Grove is ST1 6SG. Over to you for any fresh ideas. Thanks again for your time RayAl&boys
