  1. Based on my journey ... I would drop the $89.00 or so dollars and get a Micro SD card pre-laded with the 2008 streets. Covers all of N. America & Puerto Rico. >>> That decision sent me to happy land.
  2. Hi, I had a similar issue ... apparently there was a Nuvi issue resolved with firmware updates. HOWEVER, there is apparently an issue with corruption of some files from the Groundspeak system.
  3. Hi, A big 10-4 on checking auto routing. A bigger 10-4 on re-cal the compass. Hope this works for you.
  4. I have a 760 that also shuts down every time you hit the go button. Would not function in any mode until I cleared memory. Still does not want to play in the Geocaching arena. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
  5. The registration and updating process is accomplished when you install the Topo USA 7.0 software onto your PC with an internet connection. Your software and GPS will be registered at the same time. I hope that this helps! -Brian Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Not showing new firmware updates. I must be having a bad hair day
  6. The registration and updating process is accomplished when you install the Topo USA 7.0 software onto your PC with an internet connection. Your software and GPS will be registered at the same time. I hope that this helps! -Brian Thanks Team DeLorme, Next question. If I register and load from the PC world, will I be able to transition to the Mac world as your team rolls out the Mac friendly elements.
  7. Thanks for the advice to join the Delorme forums. Its funny but I have never spent much time there, always read the posts here. Now that I ordered the PN-40 I'll spend some time on their forum. I wish Groundspeak would break up their forums by manufacturer, I get bored reading about all the problems the Colorado/Oregon have. What Max said. There is a lot more help over there. Congrats on the new toy Soooooooooooooo I have taken delivery of a brand spanking new PN 40 now if I could only locate owner specific sites on the DeLorme web site I could register and update the critter. Anyone care to tell me where to go... EASY now ... many people have told me where to go over the years, however, they were largely unsolicited retorts. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please and Thanks
  8. I must be a major outlier, Have another problem. Nuvi 760 recognizes caches, however, when the Go to button is pressed the unit simply shuts down. The shutdown is across the spectrum. road Nav and geo nav. Any thoughts and suggestion would be most appreciated
  9. YAHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOO !!!! UP and running !!!!!! Solicited assistance from Son-in-law who is tall in the saddle with IBM in their computer end. He dismantled my very tall and very thick firewall ... frequently commenting that what I had in place could have protected Fort Knox. Many Thanks for your work on this feature.
  10. Hi, has the chip really croaked or has it dislodged? Patsu has the same unit and frequently he " loses " info. Turns out the card somehow migrates out of its nesting spot. ?? Do you have a migrating card perhaps.
  11. Hi and Happy Thanksgiving, I believe that you may want to look at two options. The Garmin Nuvi 500 or 550 series for a direct load. >>> Also if you have GSAK there is a wonderful add on Macro that loads caches into the Garmin Nuvi series, >>> you can find info in these forums. ( :: paperless caching :: currently the thread is some 13 pages long; numerous members may be willing to provide information ) REI has the garmin Nuvi 500 series on sale for the next few days and it is deeply discounted. Certain features of the Nuvi 760 make that unit rather attractive. >>> Yes I use a hand held while on short final. Hope I haven't muddied the water. No, I don't work for either Garmin or REI
  12. Running a P.C. windows xp, with the latestGSAK Version 7. Seems to download the Nuvi export program. Attempts to engage the macro button are futile. Program can't seem to locate the file. Back out / delete / and repeated installs meets with the same result. Whine, whine, whine snivel, snivel..
  13. Can you run POI Loader and tell it to delete old POIs, with the Nuvi plugged in and SD card removed? Well >>>> twelve hours trying to get beyond " add Nuvi button " Complete and total refusal to proceed. My screens do not match the tutorial screens. Whine, whine, whine, whine. Guess you me and Nuvi were not meant to be.
  14. Well ... the folks @ DeLorme are at least talking with we who use Macs ... to me that is a pretty big step. yes it is frustrating that we Mac-o-philes are .........
  15. Same experience here, I have been calibrating the the compass frequently and have been in a happier place.
  16. I am in the habit of ensuring that I am using magnetic when hiding and searching. Here in N.W. Calif. we have a 16* declination and it can represent a significant issue. We have a few caches around that require visiting the " Child Waypoints " in one or more stages utilizing changes from true and magnetic, certainly assists in learning new aspects / features of one's electronic gizmo ... Hope this helps.
  17. Having been down this road and through the Garmin line. etrex, -Summit, -Summit HCX, -Venture, -60CSX, - BOTH Colorado 400, and Colorado 300 ( ** Colorado's have all been returned - can you say Edsel** ) and now on to the Oregon. Have stayed in the Garmin line up because of outstanding products and the ease with which Garmin speaks Groundspeak. ****** Of course the Edsel's are the exception, however, they are nearing a happy place, so I am told. *** IN MY ESTIMATION THE 60CSX IS STILL THE TOP PERFORMER ***. I have a REFURBISHED UNIT purchased through a firm in Everett Wa. Yes I was skittish about a refurb. unit but I was going to be using it on my yak as well soooooooooooooo at $200.00 BELOW REI list it was worth the gamble, it was a factory refurb. with a one year Garmin warranty. With anything electronic it will go toast early, sooooooo I ran the puppy for 24 hours straight and it passed the test and continues to work just fine. Good Luck on your search
  18. Hi, I do not know if this will help or not. If you are familiar with marking a waypoint this may be too basic and not what you want. Locate the MARK and Enter Buttons on your unit. Start at your launch point. Depress the mark waypoint button. THEN depress enter write down the co-ordinates you just marked. Motor to your first location in the channel and depress the mark button - followed by enter write down the co-ordinates. Proceed to the next location and repeat the mark / enter / write down sequence. Continue along the way to your destination. Marking / entering / writing down as you go along. When you get that all done I would retrace your route of travel to verify your accuracy. Once you have confirmed your accuracy you can then EDIT your waypoints. Go to Find which will lead you the waypoints you just marked. If you want you can edit each waypoint and give them names : Dock, Channel1, Green1, Red7, Mable, Glory or whatever works for you. Of course you can edit the name of the waypoints as you do each one, however, if you are techno challenged as I am it might be less stressful doing the editing at home where you have some time to sort it all out. I would suggest writing the waypoints down the first time or two until you get the hang of it. Also repeat your path a few times just to verify that you got it right. A digit or two could get you in deeeeeeep kimche. I was not paying attention one time and wound up 5 miles off.
  19. Hi folks, The Venture is a killer unit, Venture owners have no reason to hang their heads low. Ventures are such stellar performers that I gave a pair of them to my adult kids for Christmas last year. I have moved on up the bells and whistles food chain and from time to time have pined for the Venture. Hold your heads and units high as your Ventures out perform some of the high end creampuff duds out there in Geo-Land. As to the Garmins and their willingness to talk Mac. >> I simply threw in the towel; the frustration was turning a fun activity into grief. Yanked the old PC out of the boneyard and away we went. CACHE ON VENTURE WARRIORS
  20. Tufa Towers is a great one! So is the nearby Travertine Earthcache. It is archived but the hot springs are still there, so it's worth stopping by! Travertine near bridgeport, Calif is back Waaaaaaaayyyy cool cache
  21. Whoa, A company that speaks to the end users!! What on earth is up with that?? I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open and tuned to the efforts from DeLorme. In anticipation, Humboldt Flier
  22. XXX Makes sense to me. Especially given that gasoline is no longer a nickel a gallon. However, how would you define the North, Central and Southern bondaries
  23. Hi, Mine ( all 3 ) got goofy after the most recent updates. Someone suggested recalibrating the compass. It has worked wonders. I re-cal every day now just because.
  24. I own three 60 CSX units and they are top flight units. They have not dumped on me once, my feeling is that the 60 CSX units are the gold standard units. Top flight performers, cream of the crop. >>> For the record, I also own two Colorado 300's. ( EDSEL'S ) They are on the shelf and have been for various and sundry performance issues. I purchased in the first wave. I pull them out from time to time and download the latest and greatest updates evaluate the results shake my head, grimace, put them back on the shelf and await the next latest and greatest fix. One day the Colorado series will no doubt be a top notch unit--- right now I consider them to be Edsel's. >>> Go with the 60 CSX <<<
