  2. quote:Originally posted by SCUBANOS:We were thinking of creating an underwater cache, where the GPS heading will only address the first issue - where on the open ocean the boat is anchored. The second (and perhaps harder) part would be to locate the cache at depth. The caches would be located in popular dive sites in the Monterey area. Would anyone be interested in hunting an underwater cache? Will be visiting Monterey later this month on business. Wanna take me diving while I am there so I can find your cache after you place it? :-) Mike Gsdvr Huntsville
  3. quote:Originally posted by Maeglin:I have a few friends in the area who are into this, and decided to try it out this weekend. I picked a couple (relatively) easy caches near here for a start, drove out and found then both this morning, and I've got to say that I enjoyed it! I Welcome! A great way to pass the time. I have the opportunity soon to go scuba diving off Puget Sound with a waterproof GPS and I have heard that some caches are underwater. Is this true and where can I find out about underwater caches? -barberoso The GPS unit may be waterproof, but it's not gonna work very well below the surface. Better to make this one an offset. BruceS and The Feros Family have both found one of our caches and we consider them "famous". 14. quote:Originally posted by Cap'n:Hello AAll, I'm new to the Board & GPS itself, "Please Bear With Me" --- I've been give the task to find which handheld gps would be suitable for our F.D. use.... The Chief has been approved for a grant for $1500.00 to procure 3-5 gps units for several proposed uses, Paul Paul, I'm a search and recovery diver for a local team that does, obviously, underwater searchs and recovery's for our local, city, state, county, and on occasion, federal law enforcement agencies. We use GPSr's to mark shore locations for searches that we do. We will mark multiple locations on shore so that we can do some triangulation to go back to a particular area to continue a search or to map an area for use in court. They are particularly useful to mark areas that might need to go back to that don't have what we would consider "permanant" items that we can use as markers for our search areas. As an example, we might not have a good permanant item handy that marks the position on shore where we entered the water to begin our search. In this case we would drive a rebar pin into the ground, completely, and mark the waypoint of the position. Should we need to come back at a later date, we would use the waypoint to get us in the neighborhood and then a metal detector to locate the pin. Now we have our starting original starting point. 18. quote:Originally posted by Mooreman:I was told today that my virtual cache of locating and photographing the different seals and designs on the sides of police cars was "inappropriate". I was not told what was inappropriate about it, but I have received several emails tonight asking why it was archived, and if/when it will return. It seemed to be a popular cache for the three days it existed. Apparently a note can be posted in the forum to gain support for the return of the cache. In reading some comments earlier I found that a virtual cache should be worthy of a coffee table book, and I think this would make a very interesting book. The people who have logged it thus far have included extra pictures and history, so some people find it interesting...Help me un-archive my virtual cache...THANKS FOR ANY SUPPORT! Mooreman I like it. I'd go out tomorrow and shoot a cop car for ya. :-) Gsdvr Huntsville

  21. quote:Originally posted by Bubba Louise:Trying to determine how prevalent cheating is in the geocaching world. Please comment on whether you do any of the following, and why: - When revisiting a previous find, you log it AGAIN as a find (not just post a note). _ No but I will post a note if think it would benefit others. Have do so a vandalized cache where I recovered as much of the missing stuff as I could find. I then emailed the owner and asked them if they wanted me to mee them to give the stuff back to them. A day or so later, someone else posted a find on the cache and said that they restocked it and replaced it. I took the stuff back that I have recovered and replaced it in the cache and then posted a note on it on the cache page. - You log caches that you haven't actually found. No, why would you do this? - If you fail to find a cache, you DON'T post a "Couldn't Find" or you post a note blaming your failure on other factors. I post a could not find. If go back at a later date and find it, I'll post it as a found. - When creating a cache you post incorrect coordinates or some other misleading clues. Nope, course I haven't placed any yet either. - You contact the cache owner for special help in finding the cache. Nope, but I have contacted a cache owner, see above. Why???? Please be honest. It is my distinct impression that these practices are very common. Am I wrong? Dunno if you are wrong or not. I'm personally not all that interested in others folks logging habits. I'm in it strictly for my own enjoyment and love the hunt and the find. The numbers of finds mean nothing to me. BTW, I met the number one and number two geocachers this past weekend. A couple fine individuals that have no reason whatsoever to "pad their scores" and I would not hesitate to say they don't 'cheat'. Do you know of others that cheat? Nope. 22. quote:Originally posted by Readymixer: Has anyone else experienced this with Magellan? "What tha hell?" Hank Hill Nope. I had an issue with my Gold, shot them an email and told them about the problem and that I needed to return it for repair, but asked if they could expidite the turn around because I could not afford to be without my unit for more than a couple days for reason other than Geocaching. I received an email response from them the next day informing me that they were shipping me a unit that day and to return mine upon receipt of it. Got it in a couple days, even during the holidays. Can't say enough good about the service that I have received to date. Mike Gsdvr Huntsville
