  1. TYVMI having a mini un under my wing I have to notice these things.
  2. One example: GC5P6H5 "Sidetracked - Bexhill" Posted co-ordinates N 50° 50.480' W 000°28.657' These coords point to a field 41.8 miles away. The website correctly gives the coords as N 50° 50.480' E 000°28.657'. I realise that for those away from the Meridian, and for experienced cachers, this is not a problem, however, I have a young "padawan" for whom East and West could easily get mixed up as she may be caching across the width of the Southern UK.
  3. Living in the UK, close to the prime meridian, I have noted that coordinates on the app have West annotations, for me that makes a cache that is 300 yards from my home seem 50 miles away. Quite a few seem to have this, although the map shows the correct location, when using the listed co-ordinates on my GPS, it says miles away!
  4. AFAICR there are no words.....??? Ding! for dodgydaved, I did say it was a slightly trick question.
  5. As I can't really give a clue, it's one of those things you remember or don't, how about I put you all out of your misery and give an easier one? Grey Owl was Archie Belaney - I would have accepted Bellamy. So let's get an easier one - What is the first line of the Spanish National Anthem? (slightly tricky question)
  6. So what's a cacher who checks their GPSr to see where the nearest cache is? I'm guilty of that, especially when I think we're near a cache. I can't be guilty of phubbing as my phone only does calls and texts!
  7. Born in Hastings, lived in Hastings, OK went to America and came back dressed as one with his tribal name that had been given him. Clue - watch the film? Or visit Hastings Museum.
  8. Sorry, he wasn't a fake, just misunderstood. Yes he was played in a film by Pierce Brosnan (and if you are looking for clues to his home in that film forget it) But you are getting close with the name!
  9. As the guidelines state: You assure us that you have the landowner's and/or land manager's permission before you hide any geocache, whether placed on private or public property. Therefore, if the cache is placed on private land the CO should seek the permission of the Store Management. Sorry, but to protect the hobby, a quick appointment with the store manager to ask his/her permission is needed. I am planning one outside a church on a public footpath, and as the fabric of the church will be used to hide the cache, even though it is not damaging the building, I will still be asking permission, and stating on the cache instructions that it is preferable to attempt the cache away from service times.
  10. OK using the reason we are all here - GC24GQP-Braycastle Walk, a cache in Hastings asks the cacher about Grey Owl's birth date, what was his birth name?
  11. Peter Cook, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller. It's so sad there are few comics as funny or as satirical!
  12. Quick bit of background, I live in Hastings, East Sussex, England. You may have heard of it in relation to a little bit of rough stuff 6 miles away in 1066. That said, the fishing village of Haestinga's People was founded about four hundred years before that, one of the first mentions of it being in 771 CE (AD) Famous visitors/residents include: John Logie Baird - Inventor of TV (hold it down Philo Farnsworth fans, I know all the arguments!) Archie Belaney - AKA Grey Owl, one of the first Nature Conservationists. Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman to qualify as a doctor. Catherine Cookson, popular novelist. Richard D'Oyly Carte, impresario and opera company founder. Henry Rider Haggard, writer. Anna McNeill Whistler, Whistler's Mother made famous in her portrait. Princess Victoria, later Queen and Empress. Plus many more. In the UK buildings of historical importance, even if it is the location of an old theatre or music hall where a famous author read some passages from his works, or where they lived, or stayed is marked by a "Blue Plaque". This is normally a ceramic plaque placed on the building to denote it's importance. There are 22 plaques in an area 1751 yards (1066m) x 703 yards (642m) in the old town of Hastings. An area that also includes the steepest funicular railway in the UK and it's sister, a castle built in 1069 by William the Conqueror and history of smugglers. So, it's a town with a LOT of history, a lot of events. Some of these cannot be twinned by being made into multi-caches or waypoints. I actually want to place a cache 132 feet from an existing cache, there is a history point I want to make with this cache, and it has nothing to do with the other. I would suggest that with the increase of accuracy of GPSRs now, the reduction of minimum spacing be reduced to 100 feet, in Urban Areas ONLY! The 163m (0.1 mile) is OK outside of towns, otherwise we will be using film containers as stepping stones.
