  1. Thanks everyone for all you contributions. I'm still trying to work out which unit to buy and am likely to end up with something which again doesn't tick all the boxes. My doubts about the Oregon started when I tried to play the cartridge "Memories of Kidderminster" about a year ago. The description on the Wherigo website said, at the time, (I haven't checked since), that the Oregon had a bug after the first few zones. We were on holiday near Kidderminster, so decided to try the cartridge. Sure enough, on the approach to Zone 4? the Oregon just shut down - blank screen....big disappointment. Since then, when trying to create a cartridge, I've read snippets of advice from here and there, saying this or that "doesn't work with the Oregon". It leaves me just keeping everything very simple and being afraid to push-my-luck with more adventurous ventures. I know virtually nothing about PDAs but they seem to work ok with Wherigo. No doubt they have problems as well. Is it going to be an Oregon in one hand and a PDA in the other?? Decisions, decisions!!!!
  2. I've had a go at creating some Wherigo cartridges, but my Oregon 550t seems limited when compared to other devices that are spoken about. I've read most of the comments made regarding pros and cons of this and that, but do need some advice on my next purchase. This is brought on by my need for a new mobile phone which I would like to be able to use for reliable Wherigo creation/playing of cartridges. Also paperless caching of course, which I can already do with the Oregon. One suggestion is HTC Wildfire, but reviews don't seem to mention details related to Wherigo/geocaching. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm based in the UK.
  3. I wouldn't hold your breath Robin. A short while ago I tried to edit the lua file I'd uploaded to Wherigo and had to give up trying to get into it. I ended up modifying the original file on my computer and reuploading that with a different name. As you've lost your original file it could be an "ugh" situation - however, I am a novice in this and there are lots of guys with much more knowledge than I have, so hope you find one and wish you good luck. Fred (Ah yes!)
  4. I read somewhere that you shouldn't have more than five zones active at any one time (can't remember where I read it). I have an Oregon and when testing a cartridge which is much simpler than yours, the unit gave up and had to be switched off and on again before it responded. It worked, ultimately, but only when I'd got rid of grandiose ideas and reverted to basics. Frustrating ain't it?
  5. I've recently had a cartridge published which I would like to edit with two minor adjustments. I can't find a link to edit the actual gwc file which I believe is the file sent to the gps unit. I opened the builder, made the adjustments to the cartridge and uploaded it again by clicking on "Publish the cartridge". The message came up to say the cartridge was ready to download to my unit, which I did, but the adjustments I had made were not incorporated. I've searched the threads but have not come across advice on editing the gwc file. The answer may be simple - I hope it is. Advice please?
  6. Thanks Ranger Fox for your time and help with my problem. It has now been resolved by the Groundspeak developers and I am able to access the MY HOME page of Wherigo. I'll have to wait four days until I'm back from a short break, then I'll get my teeth into creating this cartridge again. Regards.
  7. I did as you suggest. I uploaded the cartridge for publishing (as amended) with the original name and the same cartridge with a new name. Both uploads were accepted and the message stated the cartridge was ready to download to my unit. I tried to get into MY HOME from the HOME page of Wherigo and still got the "Error" message. I cannot attempt to download the cartridge to my unit until I get into the MY HOME page. I expect it has added a new listing, but I can't check on this. Regards.
  8. I've had more problems when trying to log in but I hope they're sorted now. Couldn't even add to this thread. I have reported the fact that I cannot get into the "MY HOME" page. No solution on this as yet. They way I tried to delete the cartridge was, perhaps, inadvisable. I opened up the cartridge I wanted to replace and, not seeing any link to "Delete", thought I would just delete all the text in all the sections and then upload it again. A mistake obviously as since then I get the dreaded "An error has occurred" message and I am unable to edit, upload, download etc. I've still had no reply from Groundspeak on this problem.
  9. Like others, I get the "Error has occurred" message, which is very frustrating as I would like to finalise a cartridge and get it sorted for others to enjoy doing (hopefully). My problem started after I had tried to delete a cartridge which I had shortened because of bugs. I wanted to replace the first one with the shortened version. Since then, I can't do anything. When are we going to find an entrepreneur who will realise that Wherigo has the potential of being great, with many thousands of cachers buying compatible units to be able to get involved in Wherigo? Surely Garmin and other manufacturers are missing out on a very lucrative opportunity. It would only take someone with the "knowhow" to spend time developing Wherigo. It's such a shame! Perhaps someone with organising skills, should get a petition going to send to gps manufacturers.
  10. I've just been told that my Premium Member status has expired! I did not receive a renewal notice and have wasted ages trying to sort out what I thought was a technical problem and not an administrative one. My thanks to the cacher who pointed this out to me. Best wishes to all.
  11. You're quite right and I'm amazed that I wasn't reminded that I need to renew. Is this just a one-off slip up or does Geocaching lose Premium Members on a regular basis? Many thanks for mentioning this small matter, which is probably the full cause. My problem now is to log-in to upgrade again. I've tried at least twenty times and my attempt is rejected, although I've just clicked a link from a page where I'm logged in!!!! Extremely frustrating and I've so little hair left, I can't afford to tear any more out. Thanks again.
  12. As it appears that you downloaded each of the caches individually, rather than a s a PQ - did you download the GPX files - which would contain all the cache information you're missing, or is there any chance you could have clicked to download the LOC instead - which would only contain the name and co-ords? Owing to an oversight, I've updated my query before I was able to delete the first one, which you've replied to. The update may answer your questions - perhaps I can delete this thread and follow up on the update (if that makes sense!) Thanks for replying.
  13. I'm going through a frustrating period with Geocaching at the moment: I have another problem with Wherigo, but that's a separate issue. Until recently, my Oregon 550t worked perfectly in the field, giving me full descriptions of all the caches I'd downloaded to it. Last weekend, I downloaded six caches and headed out with another cacher. When I tried to access the description of cache, all the message said was: "Receive more information such as cache description and hints with a Premium Membership. Visit www.geocaching.com/subscribe for more details." This applied to all my last downloads. Previous downloads gave me the full description. Luckily, my fellow cacher does not have a paperless unit and had hard copy of the descriptions, thus saving the day. I have updated the Garmin software (version 2.9.3.0) which is "Properly installed" and "Communicating Properly". I have downloaded a few caches today and still have the frustrating message. Is there a quick way to rectify this problem, without resorting to Garmin or Geocaching.com? Advice please, would be welcome.
  14. This is a very recent problem. Up to a week or so ago, I could download cache information to my gps (Garmin Oregon 550t) and read it in the field without problem. I downloaded six caches which I went to look for last weekend and when I opened up details of each cache, all the message said was "Receive more information such as cache descriptions and hints with a Premium Membership. Visit www.geocaching.com/subscribe for more details." Luckily I was with another cacher who does not have a paperless unit and therefore had the descriptions printed out, thus saving the day. I am a Premium Member and to get such a message is somewhat frustrating. Any suggestions as to how I can sort this one out please?
  15. I wanted to delete a "problem" cartridge which had too many snags and replace it with a shortened version. After trying to delete it, I now get an "Error" message when trying to access the MY HOME section of Wherigo, so am unable to do anything with my project which is very frustrating. When contacting Groundspeak about this, I received the following reply on 7th Feb 2011: Unfortunatley, there is no way to completely delete a cartridge, only to make it inactive. I would recommend trying to upload your cartridge again as a new one and activating that one with all of your corrected edits. Sorry we cannot be of more help. I have asked if I can transfer my "finds" to a new User Name, assuming I'd then be able to complete my cartridge, but have not had a reply yet. Can anyone say if this is possible please?

    Wherigo hitch

Hi sTeamTraen, On this occasion, I am using Wherigo Builder - still a novice feeling my way around. Regards. Ah yes!

    Wherigo hitch

A little more information. After I had finished with the simple one Zone cartridge as a test-case, I deleted it. When about to re-open the current cartridge, I noticed that the "Testcase" one was still in the list, so I clicked on it as if to open it to see what would happen. I got the same message as I've reported earlier. Does this help to pinpoint the bug? Regards. Ah yes!

    Wherigo hitch

Thanks for your reply, Ranger Fox. Sorry for not mentioning that my computer is 32bit so the 64bit problem shouldn't be relevant. I created a one-zone cartridge as you suggested and there is no problem re-opening it after saving it. Since posting my problem, I have managed to complete the cartridge but it was very time consuming: I suspected the "Tasks" feature as the problem arose after making several changes to the Tasks. So I deleted or amended all the tasks to a basic "Go to Zone X" with no frills. Every time I added a task, I saved the cartridge and reopened it. If successful, I saved it again twice as different backups, to fall back on. In this way, I progressed until the cartridge was completed. It has seven Zones, but is really basic. Apart from making Zones and Tasks active or inactive and Tasks complete, with a few photos being displayed, there are no adventurous features used. It is my first attempt though, so perhaps my next will improve....no doubt the problem is just waiting to pounce again so we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks again. Any further advice always welcome. Ah yes!

    Wherigo hitch

Hello Wherigo enthusiasts, I've been trying for a few weeks to create my first Wherigo cartridge and had got to the stage when I could play the game with the emulation feature and all it needed was a few bits and pieces to improve it. I suspect that the Tasks setup could be the problem but don't have much of a clue really. The problem started when I saved the cartridge and tried to open it again, but couldn't. I took a photograph of the message that came up, but can't find a way to reproduce the photograph on this formum. I'll try to type the message here, hoping I don't make any mistakes. "Error reading cartridge. System.ApplicationException:Exception of type 'System.ApplicationException' was thrown. at Groundspeak.Wherigo.ZonesEngine.ZonesEngineDll.LuaDoFile(String filename) at ZonesAuthor.LuaFunctions.ReadLuaCartridge(String LuaFileName) at ZonesAuthor.frmMain.OpenCartridgeFile()" I can't see that my gps unit or OS will have anything to do with the problem, but they are a Garmin Oregon and Windows 7. Up to now, I've noticed that the problem occurs after my deleting or adding to the Tasks feature. It may occur after other things as well, but I've not noticed this. I would appreciate any advice. Regards, Ah yes!

    Logging in

I thought I'd sent a reply a short while ago, but it's disappeared into the ether - puzzling. Sorry for the delay in replying - I was away to the place I'd wanted to play the cartridge (but didn't have it) and had no access to a computer. I've tried your suggestion (deleting Cookies) with the same result. The website still says I'm signed in and tells me I need to sign in on the same window. I have been able to download the cartridge using my laptop, so now have it in my Oregon. It's just my main desktop PC that isn't playing the game. I'm trying my hand at creating a cartridge, using my desktop, so don't want to rely on the laptop of ancient vintage to download from the website. Appreciate your advice and thanks.

    Logging in

Hi, I know I need to login to be able to download a cartridge but, when trying to download a Wherigo cartridge I get a window saying I need to log in, even though I am logged in as shown in the top righthand corner of the window. I've tried to re-validate my account and have received the validation code which I have entered two or three times. Each time I get a window saying "An error has occurred - return to the Home page". I'm going around in circles. I've contacted the Wherigo support via email and, after initially trying to assist they have sent me the following message: "Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, this may be out of my scope of service that I can offer. Our Wherigo forums are very active and in more cases the best resource for technical troubleshooting that we cannot assist with on our end. I would recommend posting this information in the forums and seeing if someone from our helpful community might be able to help. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=59 I am sorry that we cannot be of more help." Can you advise please. Regards, Ah yes!
  23. Thanks for this tip ceeG - worked a dream - my Geocaches window is now blank and I can start again.
  24. Hi Gary, I have a 550t and am having trouble trying to delete all my loaded waypoints (caches). The manual says to click on "Setup" > reset > delete all waypoints > yes. I have done this several times and when I click on "Geocaches" again, I get the full list still in the unit.....dozens of caches that I don't need. It seems to be a similar problem to yours - I haven't entered any routes yet and maybe I'll avoid them until this is sorted out. Cheers, Fred. (Ah yes!)
