  1. Recovered KZ1980 yesterday, tried to log it today at gc.com, not in that database. Its a 1959 mark, just wondering why it's not there. Maybe it was just mistakenly eliminated before the 2001 information was downloaded by gc.com. It has a previous DNF, but we run across those all the time. Oh well, that's how it goes.
  2. Thanks guys for all the opinions and ideas, and pointing out a couple of things I didn't consider (like the possible cap on the pier). All considered, I'm going to have to pass on this one. If anyone else wants to attempt it though, let me know and I'll meet you there and videotape the episode from my photo-taking vantage point. There have been quite a few BM's that I've passed by because they were on active RR property. And some that I probably should have passed by but did them anyway because I had a good "out" and they weren't physically dangerous. One of Clint Eastwood's famous movie lines is "a man has got to know his limitations". Ain't it the truth.
  3. MD0122 is a BM on a railroad bridge pier. Pix below show the general area. The bridge itself is easily accessible from the right (east) through a small municipal park. The BM is on the center pier and is 6.2 feet below the level of the rail. The railroad is fairly active, about one train per hour. Keeping in mind that it is an active RR, its on the center pier, and its over 6 feet down to the top of the pier, about another 25-30 feet down to a splash, and then there's that pesky trespassing issue, ....would you go for it?? Not trying to start any debates over any of the railroad legal issues, just wondering what the general consensus is on the actual physical obstacles and physical risk involved. So far I've resisted the urge to recover it, and I probably won't do it
  4. HERE is a link to a benchmark in Cincinnati that was found uprooted, and has apparently been officially abandoned (destroyed?) It is being taken around to geocaching events to be logged. Interesting, have never seen this done before. Although it is regularly being logged as found, I agree with the entry of 5.26.2005, that a "note" might be more appropriate than a "found". Anybody ever seen this happen with a benchmark before?
  5. Scott's pathtag is outstanding, a great design. Glad I traded with him a month or two ago.
  6. That was a great contest! The first I've participated in. Thanks to John and Shirley for all their hard work in the creation and operation of this activity. It was a lot of fun, and a good excuse to burn up $500+ in diesel fuel.

  13. I have a quick question regarding the 2OLDFARTS counter, need a clarification/ruling: If the designation says one thing and the (obviously correct) station marker is not marked quite the same, which one do I use for the 2OLDFARTS bonus? The PID in question is MD0163, whose designation is DAB 24. The actual station disc reads 24 DAB. Do I use the D or the 2 ?? Or a choice?

  15. Here are a couple photos of a Right Of Way marker in Ohio. First time I have run across this type of marker in Ohio. Was out looking for a BM the other day (never did find it, I think its under the road now), and came across this ROW marker. It was sitting in the top of a concrete cylinder extending about 10 inches above grade and leaning heavily to the north. ROW 1 ROW 2
  16. The Quarry Cache just outside of Marion is always popular among those who have done it, it's a great cache. Click HERE for the link. It's not too far from Nerk. If you are not comfortable around narrow elevated walkways with steep fall-offs on both sides, and jumping over small chasms where if you miss you fall to your death, then maybe consider another cache. It's really not that dangerous, but if your geokids are small you may not want to try this one.

  23. I've seen several of those R/W markers for Michigan, and they have all been on the state line at the property line edges of the State Routes in SE Michigan. MD2009 would be an example, the third photo in my log for that benchmark shows the R/W marker. The other two photos are of the type of granite marker used to survey the Michigan/Ohio border, which in this case is MD2009.
  24. Just a couple of quick ones while driving to/from the hunting lodge: 4/14/07: PK0099, DNF* 4/15/07: NE1494, REG
