  1. Okay, a little help, if someone could...

I'm trying to run Mac SimpleGPS, but it tells me that "there is no default application to open the document 'Mac SimpleGPS.'" I'm pretty sure that the problem is that it shouldn't be a document, but I really don't know. I'll admit that I'm (effectively) pretty new to Macs, since I haven't seriously used one since the original ones came out in the 90's.

    Any thoughts?

What are you doing when you get that message, "there is no default application to open the document 'Mac SimpleGPS.'"?

I am wondering if you have set a default application for .GPX files.

    Try this...

Select (highlight/click on once) the .GPX file (presumably a gc.com Pocket Query file, such as '1072256.gpx').

Press the 'Command(Apple)' & 'i' keys at same time... a small window titled "(filename.gpx) Info" will open.

Go to "Open with:" section of the small window, and in the drop down box Select "Mac SimpleGPS" (presumably from the Applications folder).

Then click on "Change All", and all .GPX files will be opened with Mac SimpleGPS (I am using version 1.7b).

If you decide to change the default application to GPSBabel, or other, use the same steps but select the different application.

I've been using Macs (and Windows PC's) since the early days (after machine language, and DOS). I am happy to help... send a message through my gc.com profile if needed.

  2. So what is be must have software to manage and streamline the addiction. Both of them, Geocaching and sticking to the Mac. I do not want to hear about running MS. I do not have an intertest in it, or the ability.

Right now I have a Garmin Venute Cx.

For about three years for Mac-based paperless geocaching, I have used a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz (earlier PB G4 1GHz), and a Palm Tungsten T2 PDA (earlier Tungsten T1). And for GPS receivers, we currently use/have used a Magellan Meridian Color, Magellan eXplorist 400, Magellan Meridian GPS, Magellan Map 330, and Garmin eTrex Legend, with two PB G4's.

We download a gc.com Pocket Query with caches of interest, and use MacCMConvert to convert the .GPX file to a .PDB file for CacheMate on the Palm, and use the basic Palm Desktop HotSync feature to load the PDB file to the Palm (by cable or bluetooth).

We upload the Pocket Query .GPX file to the GPS receivers using MacSimpleGPS, or MacGPSBabel, via the standard Magellan or Garmin serial cable with a Serial-to-USB adapter. We are now experimenting with the latest Mac OS X version of GPSBabel. And we just learned about MacCaching for OS X, so we will give that a run too.

I have occasionally run GSAK on VirtualPC on the PowerBooks, but personally do not find enough features/advantages to GSAK to offset having to use VirtualPC, and last I checked GSAK still did not have USB support for Magellan.

If you have questions, I will be happy to help with my experiences from using this setup.

  3. What is an Ignore List?

It is a list of items you want to ignore on your search results and pocket queries. When you filter your hides and finds on the advanced search page it will filter them out from the results. You will still see them on standard searches.

I really like the website enhancements and the new look. Thanks, Jeremy, and all at Groundspeak!

    (snip)

Is there a bulk select feature or a way to simultaneously add ALL caches placed by a particular cacher to the Ignore List?

Or is the only way to click through a couple hundred of that cacher's pages and add each one individually?

    (snip)

    Thanks.

I like the look and feel of the new design.  One suggestion for the ignore list - would it be possible to check a large number of caches to ignore at one time.  Something similiar to the waypoint checkbox that appears on the search page. There is one cacher in my area who has strewn a couple of hundred annoying microcaches everywhere and I would like to ignore his caches without having to go into each and everyone and put it on the ignore list. Thanks.

The short answer is yes. We'll be providing a feature to bulk add a bunch of waypoints to a list that is similar to what you described :D

Any updates on this feature? And, would it be possible to have a larger-than-100-caches "Ignore" list, perchance? There's an entire series I'd like to be able to ignore - and it's currently over 400 caches, with no signs of stopping.

Thanks very much for these lists, in any case! These are fantabulous!

I am reminded every week when the Geocaching.com Weekly Cache Notification lands in my Inbox how much I would really really appreciate and use a bulk ignore feature. If a bulk ignore feature has been added, and I just have not yet discovered it, I would be grateful if someone could point out where it is and how to use it. Perhaps even using the 'check box' on the Nearest Cache page, with an "Ignore" button at the bottom of the page (similar to current "Download Waypoints" button), would be better than naught. If not, I will just keep on hoping, and scrolling, and ignoring. Thanks.

    Happy Sigh! B)

I have read the original post here, and all through this thread, and the other threads about the Ignore feature. I have explored the Bookmarks and Ignore features, but I still have a couple questions.

Any help or 'Markwells' on this would be much appreciated. Thanks. :P

  6. We discussed this earlier in the week. We'll be adding another field on the results page indicating size, as well as adding the "mini" size to the list of sizes.

Thanks for adding the icon "indicating size" on the search results page.

The visual cue is another bit of information that quickly helps me know if it is a cache I might be interested in hunting, without having to open each "traditional" cache page to find out if it is a "micro" or a "regular" cache.

The size icon may not be the perfect answer, and the experienced cachers and forum posters will certainly have great discussions on the merits and failings of whether it is the appropriate method, but accepting that geocaching.com is a fun and fluid, ever-developing work-in-progress, the size icon works for me for now!

    Thanks!
